Lisle downs St. Edward, heads to state May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
It didn't matter that the Lisle girls soccer team managed but 3 shots against a stringent St. Edward defense. It only mattered that one of those 3 shots went in the net. Junior Skyler Tomko scored unassisted from the top of the 18-yard box with 16:06 left in the second half, and junior goalkeeper Vanessa Roach stopped 11 shots as Lisle denied St. Edward a return trip to the Class 1A state finals with a 1-0 victory at the Hinckley-Big Rock supersectional Tuesday.

Richmond’s experience too much for St. Edward May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
The young St. Edward baseball team was overwhelmed by a group of playoff veterans in Richmond Saturday. Host and top seed Richmond-Burton, which advanced last season to a Class 3A sectional final, erupted for 7 runs on 5 hits in the second inning and cruised to an 8-0 victory in a Class 2A regional title game behind the complete-gameout effort of junior Ryne Blanton.

Genoa-Kingston denies St. Edward regional crown May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Genoa-Kingston softball coach Mike Lauer wanted to make sure his team didn't pound groundballs in Kali Kossakowski's direction Saturday. The Cogs didn't. Instead G-K hit only one grounder to St. Edward's junior shortstop, who had a hand in 9 outs during St. Edward's Class 2A regional semifinal win over Regina Dominican Wednesday. The rest of the time, the Cogs were spraying the ball to all fields, delivering a 10-1 decision over the Green Wave for the regional championship.

Second straight sectional title for St. Edward May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Saturday's sectional final was a bit of déjà vu all over again for St. Edward's girls soccer team. For the second year in a row, the Green Wave beat Rockford Lutheran to claim a sectional crown. The Wave downed Lutheran, 3-1, to win the Class 1A Harvard sectional. Chelsea Gnan, Rena Ranallo and Kelly Tripicchio scored for St. Edward. Gnan added 2 assists.

St. Edward spoils Westminster’s plan May 17, 2012 12:00 AM
No. 3 St. Edward foiled No. 2 Westminster Christian's plan by rallying for a 3-2 victory in a Class 2A Richmond-Burton regional baseball semifinal Thursday. Warriors coach Jeff Moeller said his hope was to reserve ace pitcher Ryan Perez for the first three innings, get a lead, then bring the dominant left-hander in to pitch the final 4 innings. The plan was working early. Left-handed senior Dylan Scully opened the game by blanking the Green Wave for the first two innings. Offensively, Westminster Christian (18-12) grabbed a 2-run, first-inning lead, courtesy of Will Woodhouse's infield popup that fell untouched for a run-scoring hit and Luke Weston's subsequent RBI double.

St. Edward moves on to regional title game May 16, 2012 12:00 AM
St. Edward senior Morgin Coughlin wasnt about to let a couple of illegal pitch calls bother her. Well, it was actually more than a couple. Coughlin fought off 11 illegal pitch calls but only one with a runner on base and the Green Wave pounded out 10 hits in an 8-3 win over Regina Dominican Wednesday in the semifinals of the Class 2A Genoa-Kingston regional.

St. Edward heads to sectional final again May 15, 2012 12:00 AM
After waiting out a 90-minute weather delay, St. Edward effectively put away Stillman Valley in less than 10. Allison Kruk scored 2 of her 4 goals in the first 10 minutes and the Green Wave cruised past the Cardinals, 6-0, in a semifinal of the Class 1A Harvard girls soccer sectional Tuesday night. For the third time in 4 years, the Wave will face Rockford Lutheran in the postseason, this time in the sectional final at 11 a.m. Saturday. A win will send St. Edward to the state finals for the second straight year. Chelsea Gnan added a goal and 3 assists, and Kelly Tripicchio also scored for St. Edward (18-7-2).

St. Edward takes next step forward May 14, 2012 12:00 AM
The youthful St. Edward baseball team took an important developmental step in closing out North Boone for a 9-5 win in a Class 2A regional play-in game at Wing Park in Elgin Monday. Junior left-handed reliever Jacob Koehring struck out left-handed hitting Josh LaDuke with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh to seal a victory that improved the Green Wave to 18-16, which means the stated team goal of finishing above. 500 this season has been met.

Legendary athlete Jim Thorpe has bloodlines in Elgin May 12, 2012 12:00 AM
Theres a pretty good reason St. Edward junior softball standout Kali Kossakowski leads the area in stolen bases. Speed is in her genes. Heck, more than speed is in the genes of the Kossakowski family, who live in Elgins west side. Lets just say being athletic is something the Kossakowskis had as a birthright, considering the Kossakowskis are related to the man who was once dubbed The Worlds Greatest Athlete.

After a sluggish start against Elgin Academy, St. Edward knew it was critical to start quickly against Genoa-Kingston. So the Green Wave wasted no time, scoring 3 times in the first 11 minutes and cruising past the Cogs, 4-0, to win the Class 1A Genoa-Kingston girls soccer regional Friday afternoon. The Wave will play todays Byron-Stillman Valley winner at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Harvard sectional.
