St. Charles N. handles pressure, Schaumburg May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
No matter which of the five kicks in a penalty kick shootout a player is slated to take, there is bound to be pressure. Shootouts are pressure-packed situations by their very nature. But Lauren Koehl stepped up to take the fifth of St. Charles North's kicks on Friday night with a pressure unique to the shootout with Schaumburg: she could win the match for her team by converting her kick.

  • St. Charles N. survives scare from Conant May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Most baserunners are trained to prepare for a pitch in the dirt that might bounce away and allow them to advance. But when Conant pitcher Nick Blaha threw one that sailed over his catcher's head, St. Charles North's Adam Delisi was prepared.

After edging St. Charles East in 13 innings last week, the North Stars needed 8 innings on Wednesday for a 7-6 win in the semifinals of the Class 4A St. Charles North regional.

St. Charles N. ousts Geneva May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
At the start of Tuesday's Class 3A Schaumburg Sectional semifinal with Geneva, St. Charles North's Kenzie Rose sported a clean, white headband on her forehead. By the end of the match, that headband was more gray than white, and the smudge that she put on that cloth in the ninth minute of play should be autographed by all the North Stars. That mark came as Rose rose to meet Kelly Manski's left wing corner kick. Rose headed the ball into the net, which certainly set the underdogs on their way to an eventual 2-0 victory.

  • Kaneland coach Brian Aversa, left, and first base coach Jim Smedley embrace after an 11-3 victory over Oak Forest in last year’s Class 3A state championship game. The Knights have earned the top seed in their regional this spring.

Kaneland aims to maintain focus and recapture the magic May 21, 2012 12:00 AM
Here we go again. Believe it or not, it has been nearly a year since Kaneland captured the Class 3A state baseball championship with an 11-3 victory over Oak Forest. "Looking back at it, it was a blur," said Knights coach Brian Aversa. "You have to enjoy it while it lasts. Before I knew it, we were playing on a Saturday for the state championship. "It was great." Despite graduating a ton of talent from last year's team, Kaneland finds itself in a similar position heading into this week's postseason tournament — as the top seed in the regional.

  • St. Charles N. jumps on Saints early May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Watching St. Charles North and St. Charles East head off the field at halftime of Saturday's Class 3A regional title match told everything about what had happened over the previous 40 minutes — and what ultimately who would win this match between crosstown rivals. The host North Stars trotted over to hear some encouraging words from coach Ruth Vostal and to be cautioned about not letting down despite having a 4-0 lead. East's players, had the fixed gaze and set jaw of a group of players who had just seen their season moved to the brink of conclusion.

Spagnola just misses state title May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Ninety meters of barriers stood between West Aurora sophomore Emma Spagnola in her attempt to duplicate Shanice Andrews' feat from two years ago. In the Class 3A girls state track and field finals Saturday afternoon at Eastern Illinois' O'Brien Stadium, Spagnola, who earlier repeated her all-state campaign in the long jump with a seventh-place finish, was determined to climb to the top of the podium in the 100-meter hurdles.

  • St. Charles East’s Nick Huskisson is out on a tag by St. Charles North’s John Brodner while trying to go from first to third on a single during Thursday’s game at Fifth Third Ballpark in Geneva.

St. Charles E. wins outright River title May 17, 2012 12:00 AM
Literally and figuratively, Kyle Manske took one for the team Thursday night. In the top of the first inning, the St. Charles East senior left-hander was struck just below the left side of his chest by a vicious line drive off the bat of St. Charles North’s Jake Johansmeier. Remarkably, Manske still remained on the mound 6 innings later, and he induced Johansmeier to hit a game-ending grounder on his 118th pitch of the game to shortstop Nicholas Erickson, who tossed the ball to second baseman Jordan Hayes for the final out of the Saints’ 6-2 Upstate Eight Conference River Division title-clinching victory over the North Stars (23-11, 17-8) at Fifth Third Ballpark in Geneva.

  • St. Charles E. clinches share of River crown May 16, 2012 12:00 AM
Before St. Charles East lefty Nick Huskisson got to work mowing down a dangerous St. Charles North lineup Wednesday, he had his own work to do on the mound. Huskisson drew the letters A and D in the dirt next to him. Those are the initials of Anna Daley, a junior at St. Charles East who passed away from leukemia last week.
