Myia Clark’s career at St. Viator got off to one heck of a start Wednesday night at the Dundee-Crown girls basketball tournament. The freshman’s game-winning layup at the buzzer gave the Lions a dramatic 53-51 win over host Dundee-Crown for St. Viator’s first win of the season.

  • ‘Sick’ performances from Anderson at sectional Nov 17, 2014 4:47 PM
With the benefit of perspective, perhaps that wasn’t a cold Palatine junior Kristin Anderson was battling on Saturday during the Stevenson girls swimming and diving sectional. After all, lifetime best times are generally not produced without a fully functional respiratory system, and all of Anderson’s swims at the meet were besties, and by a wide margin. Anderson won the 50-yard free (23.63) and the 100 free (51.37), breaking the pool record in the latter. She also anchored Palatine’s state-qualifying 200 freestyle relay. So, OK, perhaps it was seasonal allergies were behind the red nose and slightly swollen face. Either way, it doesn’t look like it’s worth worrying about.

  • Green means go: Fremd floors it at Stevenson Nov 15, 2014 8:38 PM
Those arriving promptly for the 1 p.m. start of the girls swimming sectional meet at Stevenson on Saturday afternoon were challenged by the volume of traffic around the school, as the Patriots were hosting a Class 8A playoff football which also featured a 1 p.m. kickoff. There was heavy traffic inside the natatorium, too — figuratively moving to the east, toward next weekend’s state championships at Evanston Township High School. Fremd was the most successful lane navigator. The Vikings won all three relays in pool-record times to win with an impressive 299.5 points, topping Barrington (221) and Stevenson (220.5) in the team race.

St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights is beginning a $3 million renovation of the school’s fine arts facilities, planned to be completed in August 2015. The renovation is the final phase of a $14 million investment that also has included a new cafeteria and other upgrades at the school over the past few years. “This is an incredible time for Saint Viator High School,” the Rev. Fr. Corey Brost, the school’s president, said.

  • Class 5A football playoffs: St. Viator falls to Sycamore Nov 8, 2014 6:43 PM
An ill wind did not blow St. Viator’s way in the second round of the Class 5A playoffs at Sycamore. The Lions were hoping to defeat the Spartans in a playoff game for the second time in 13 years. However, trailing 15-14 with 58 seconds left, Joe McCollum’s 37-yard field goal attempt was about five yards to the right of the goal post. The No. 12-seeded Spartans were able to escape with the 15-14 victory over the No. 13 Lions, who had defeated Sycamore 25-13 in 2001.

St. Joseph robbed St. Viator of a place in the Class 2A state boys championship match in the cruelest of fashions on Friday. The Chargers outlasted the Lions in a shootout, 5-4, to earn the 4-3 victory in a state semifinal contest at Hoffman Estates High School. St. Joseph (23-0-1) converted all five of its spot kicks while keeper Jonathan Rosales stopped Javier Romero in the last round to secure a spot against No. 1 Wheaton Academy (24-1-1) in today’s state final at 1 p.m.

  • St. Viator returns to final four Nov 4, 2014 10:38 PM
History was on the side of St. Viator going into its boys soccer supersectional matchup on Tuesday night. After all, with coach Mike Taylor on the sidelines, the Lions have never lost a game with state qualification at stake. And true to form, St. Viator is headed into the final four after getting past Chicago Foreman 5-2 in the Class 2A Stevenson supersectional in Lincolnshire. The Lions (21-5-1) next face St. Joseph in the Class 2A semifinals at 3 p.m. Friday at Hoffman Estates High School.

  • Boys soccer: Supersectional scouting, Northwest Nov 3, 2014 12:16 PM
Boys soccer / Supersectional scouting Class 3A Barrington supersectionalWhere: at Barrington Community Stadium, 616 W. Main Street, Barrington. Lake Park (20-1-4) vs. Streamwood (16-5-2), 4:30 p.m. Storyline: Nobody would have figured on a matchup such as this, especially with heavily favored top seed St. Charles East heading up this sectional. But when No. 8 West Chicago upended the state ranked Saints, it opened the door for others, particularly Streamwood, which now enjoys its first-ever SS appearance in program history after sending off highly regarded Rockford Boylan (2-1) last Saturday to capture its first sectional crown also. Lake Park made it to the supersectional last year, eventually coming away with a fourth-place finish and the first state trophy in program history. The Lancers withstood a heart-stopping sudden-death PK victory over Rolling Meadows last Saturday to keep its hopes alive of a return trip to the 3A tournament. Advancement: The winner advances to play the Normal supersectional champion (Normal or Thornton) at 5 p.m. Friday in the state tournament at Hoffman Estates High School. Fremd (18-5-1) vs. New Trier (22-3-2), 6:30 p.m. Storyline: A loss during the first week of the season to the Trevians doesn’t mean much now as Fremd coach Steve Keller’s club looks to advance to the finals for the first time since 2011. “Our defense has been steady and strong all year long, and even though we weren’t at our best against Highland Park last Friday night, that unit has been the strength of our team, especially early on when we were still sorting out our lineup and the way that would eventually play,” Keller said. “With that said, they are very intense, aggressive and tenacious, so we need to match these traits they bring to the game or it could be a long night for us.” The Vikings’ back line has been air-tight during the stretch run, and its midfield play has been well organized despite the bustling energy and highly technical football seen from its last two sectional opponents, Libertyville and Highland Park. The all-star cast of Tomas Peleckas, Ben Borst, Danny Burton and Luke Kosacz have conceded just one goal since Oct. 2. As often is the case at this time of the season, the goalkeeper is called upon to make big saves at big moments, and the senior Will Lefevre has been magnificent when forced into action. Forwards Ben Poder and Zach and Luke Schoffstall have received plenty of heavy-handed treatment from opponents, but the trio has continually delivered in the final third. Advancement: The winner advances to play the Lewis University supersectional winner (Naperville North or Hinsdale Central) at 7 p.m. Friday in the state tournament semifinals at Hoffman Estates Class 2A Stevenson supersectionalWhere: Stevenson High School, One Stevenson Drive, Lincolnshire St. Viator (20-5-1) vs. Chicago Foreman (6-6-4), 6:30 p.m. Storyline: This will be St. Viator’s first postseason matchup against a lower-seeded team. The No. 10 Hornets defeated the Nos. 8 and 2 seeds at their regional before stunning No. 1 Elmwood Park in OT to win that sectional and gain a berth opposite the No. 5 Lions. “We used our low seed as a little extra bit of motivation when playing all those teams ranked ahead of us, and with each win during the tournament, we put another higher seed out,” said St. Viator coach Mike Taylor. In a terrific bit of trivia, the last time St. Viator played Foreman was in the third-place match during the 1996 state tournament, the last year of single-class play. The Lions won 2-0 back in the Nino DaSilva-Jarrett Payton days, when that spectacular scoring duo combined for over 80 goals. This year, with its strength of schedule, experience, and the strike force of Zach Gyuricza and Aidan Williams (35 goals combined), it seems likely the Lions will advance. “We had a chance to get out to see Foreman, and they have some individual talent that we’ll have to keep an eye on, but as I’ve been saying, we’re coming together at the right time, and playing the system we’ve put in place,” said Taylor. “If we continue doing so in this game, we’ll be playing this weekend at the state tournament.” The Hornets’ coach, Dan Hakimian, was an all-state player at Glenbrook North in 1982 and a member of the state runner-up Spartans the year before under coach Mike Radakovich. Sophomore Omar Jaimes leads Foreman with 13 goals. Advancement: The winner advances to play the Lemont supersectional champ (St. Joseph or Marian Catholic) at 3 p.m. Friday in the Class 2A state tournament in Hoffman Estates. — Mike Garofola

  • St. Viator savors postseason success Nov 1, 2014 5:46 PM
St. Viator had not won a playoff game since 2006. On Saturday, it took the Lions just one half of football to change that. St. Viator scored all of its 41 points in the first half to roll past Urban Prep-Englewood of the Chicago Public League at Stagg Stadium in Chicago the opening round of the Class 5A playoffs. St. Viator (6-4), which is the 13th seed, will travel again next Saturday to play No. 12 Sycamore, which cruised past Westinghouse on Saturday.
