  • Flight attendants helped to ground sex discrimination Oct 19, 2014 6:12 AM
During her 34-year career as a flight attendant, Shari Worrell of Lake Barrington and other young women who started as stewardesses helped change the way the airlines and all employers dealt with women in the wake of the groundbreaking Civil Rights Act of 1946 and its Title VII, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.

  • Boys golf: Barrington grabs third-place state finish Oct 18, 2014 7:27 PM
With all of its great young talent, the future of the Barrington boys golf team looks very bright. The present isn’t so bad either. Led by super sophomores Timothy Lim and Tom Calbi, the Broncos were able to take home hardware from Saturday’s Class 3A state tournament finals on a cold day at the “Den” course in Bloomington. Lim shot 73 at the meet’s final round to finish in a tie for sixth individually (at 6-over par for the two day meet), while Calbi carded a 74 on the final day to tie for 12th place individually with a 151 (7-over). The stellar showing of the sophs along with a 77 from junior Burke Barsamian helped Barrington claim the third-place team trophy.

  • St. Viator takes charge against St. Patrick Oct 18, 2014 7:20 PM
St. Viator senior quarterback Tyler Johnston is one of the top quarterbacks in the East Suburban Catholic Conference, but he sometimes gets overlooked. Not, however, by his own teammates. “The other players love it when Johnston is in the game, because he can do so much with the ball,” said Lions coach Brandon New. “He’s all about team, and it gets the rest of them going. They feed off of his energy. He has a quarterback moxie, which is something you can’t teach.” Johnston came up with another fine performance in leading St. Viator to a 42-14 victory over St. Patrick at Hanson Stadium in Chicago on Saturday afternoon. Johnston completed 16 of 24 passes with 2 interceptions for 240 yards and 2 touchdown passes. That puts him at 2,202 yards and 15 touchdown passes for the season.

  • Boys golf: Barrington’s in the hunt downstate Oct 17, 2014 8:19 PM
Barrington’s golfers didn’t let the fox trap catch them. The Broncos teed off Friday morning at the Class 3A state finals at the Den course at Fox Creek in Bloomington, where holes 5 through 7 are called the “fox trap” due to their extreme degree of difficulty. And although Barrington didn’t exactly tame the course, they performed well enough to stand in third place after the first day of the tournament at the Arnold Palmer-designed links. The Broncos, led by junior Burke Barsamian’s 3-over par 75, shot 310 and trail leader Hinsdale Central (300) by 10 strokes heading into Saturday’s final round.

  • Boys soccer: St. Viator grabs East Suburban Catholic title Oct 17, 2014 8:40 PM
Apparently, St. Viator’s boys soccer team was saving its best for last. St. Viator (16-5-1, 8-1-0) denied Benet the draw it needed in order to win a second outright title in the last three years.

Garmoe and Carlson each fired a 3-over par 74 to tie for fourth place with three others, while Gavin made the cut via a five-way tie for 16th at 6-over 77.

  • Lesson learned, St. Viator bounces back Oct 11, 2014 12:30 AM
Sometimes it is not a moment on the field that defines a team’s season, but instead a moment outside the lines. St. Viator’s football team believes it experienced such a moment before its 49-32-homecoming victory over Marian Central on Friday night. After a difficult week of practice, St. Viator (4-3, 3-2) had a team meeting on Thursday to discuss bigger-picture issues. Coach Brandon New said the meeting talked about how football is not about wins and losses, but about teaching the lessons to win in life.
