St. Viator girls basketball coach Christina Jost and her players knew they were going up against a quality team in Marist on Saturday afternoon at the Cahill Gymnasium. So what better way to tune up for a Class 3A regional next Tuesday? “We kind of took that mindset,” Jost said after the talented Redhawks came away with a 76-39 victory in the East Suburban Catholic Conference finale. “We knew Marist (21-9, 7-3) was a very good team and obviously well-coached. “So we were using it as a good way to prepare for the state tournament. I don’t see us playing teams as tough as them early on, so hopefully this will help us.”

Geneva bounces back, surprises St. Viator Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Less than 24 hours after suffering one of its worst losses of the season, Geneva’s boys basketball team earned one of its best victories Saturday night. Chris Parrilli and Nate Navigato scored 18 points apiece to lead 4 players in double figures, as the Vikings (17-7) recorded a 69-62 nonconference triumph over St. Viator (16-7) in Geneva.

Lakes senior forward Jake Kohler and Benet senior guard Christen Prasse have earned MVP honors from the Daily Herald for their recent basketball performances. Kohler blocked a last-second layup attempt to help Lakes defeat North Chicago by a point and move the Eagles into a first-place tie in the league. Prasse tied a personal best with 30 points plus 7 assists in a decisive victory over Providence.

Prospect aims for outright title; Schaumburg tries to turn back Fremd Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
With two conference games remaining, Mid-Suburban League races are starting to take shape in both divisions. In the East, Elk Grove (11-12, 5-3) visits Prospect (14-9, 7-1) tonight in a rematch of a thrilling contest on Jan. 11 in which the Knights pulled out a 60-59 victory. While Prospect has already clinched a share of the East, a win for the Knights gives them the division outright and assures their spot in the Mid-Suburban title game on Feb. 20. In the West, Schaumburg (14-9, 6-2) hosts Fremd (16-7, 5-3) with the opportunity to lock up a share of their third straight West title. The Saxons won the first meeting in convincing fashion 46-35.

And her most important shots came in a pressure-packed situation at the foul line as her 2 free throws with eight seconds left turned a 1-point lead into a 41-38 victory over Conant in Mid-Suburban West action.

"This show is grander than most," Director Kate Costello said. "It took not only staff and students to produce this Disney extravaganza, but an army of parent volunteers and friends."

Quick-starting Notre Dame handles St. Viator Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
A highly anticipated contest between St.Viator and Notre Dame at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates on Saturday didn't have the finish Lion fans were hoping for. The Dons bolted out of the gate, running up a 14-2 lead with 2:45 left in the first quarter and forcing St.Viator to play catch-up all night in an East Suburban Catholic Conference matchup that tipped off three games in the National Guard High School Hoops Showdown. Notre Dame never trailed and tamed the Lions 64-48. Notre Dame stays a game back of the lead in the conference race at 5-1 (and 18-2 overall), while the Lions fell to 14-5 and 4-2.

Conant takes flight in own invite Jan 26, 2013 12:00 AM
A strong showing from Conant in the flighted boys swimming invitational hosted by the Cougars on Saturday led to a convincing victory. Conant won the A, B and C levels and placed second in the F level to win the six-team meet with 284 points, ahead of Maine South (237.5) and Mundelein (184.50). Downers Grove North (177) was fourth, followed by Jacobs co-op (120) and Huntley (81).

After giving state-ranked Rolling Meadows one of its toughest tests of the season on Friday night, Elk Grove's girls basketball team had plenty in reserve on Saturday afternoon. The Grenadiers recovered from a first-quarter 12-8 deficit and limited visiting Zion-Benton to 2 points in the second quarter to gain a 17-14 edge at half before pulling away to a 46-39 nonconference triumph.
