    Dan Hadler finished with a game-high 21 points to help Elk Grove improve to 2-1 in Mid-Suburban East boys basketball after a 54-50 victory over visiting Buffalo Grove on Friday. Buffalo Grove led by 1 point entering the fourth quarter before being outscored 16-11. Senior Depin Patel finished with 9 points, all on 3-pointers, for the Grenadiers. Collin Calcagno paced the Bison with 15 points and Colin Dekorski finished with 13.

    Television. Birthday. Dialing long distance. So what do the above have to do with undefeated Prospect posting a 65-32 win over St. Viator at the Jean Walker Field House on Tuesday night? Senior Taylor Will, playing her first game since appearing on Comcast SportsNet television over the weekend, scored a game-high 19 points and Knights freshman guard Emily Frasco celebrated her 15th birthday with one of Prospect’s nine season-high nine 3-pointers. It all added up to a second straight season in which the Knights have begun 8-0.

    One of the reasons Buffalo Grove’s girls basketball team is off to a sizzling 8-1 start is because it has a handful of players who can shoot well from anywhere on the floor. “We just want the best shot for our team,” said Bison coach Steve Kolodziej. “Whether it’s a 3-pointer or a 2-pointer, we’ll take either of the above.” The Bison went above and beyond with their long-range artistry on Monday night at the Cahill Gym in Arlington Heights. With senior Maddy Callahan leading the parade, BG connected for a season-high nine 3-pointers en route to a 49-28 nonconference victory at St. Viator.

    Christmas came a bit early for St. Viator. The Lions had not expected guard Mark Falotico back on the court until January. But Falotico, who had been sidelined with a foot injury, got clearance to play earlier this week. Falotico, who played sparingly, scored 12 points as St. Viator rolled past Carmel 75-54 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference opener for both teams Friday in Arlington Heights.

    St. Ignatius took top honors in the five-team St. Viator boys swimming invitational, but there was plenty for second-place Prospect and the third-place host Lions to be pleased with on Wednesday. The Wolfpack was able to win all three relays to amass 303 points, with Prospect at 250 and St. Viator at 203.

    After starting the season with a pair of losses, Schaumburg’s boys basketball has found the winning groove. The Saxons worked overtime on Saturday at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights before posting a 59-54 victory over Hersey. Brendan Parker (18 points), Jason Schoo (13) and Charlie Quilco (10) weer top scorers for Schaumburg (4-2). Payton Haas and Joseph Coffaro each scored 18 points to pace Hersey (3-3).

    It’s a new era for St. Viator girls basketball. Wednesday night was its official start at the school’s Cahill Gymnasium in Arlington Heights. After playing its first five games in Carpentersville (Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving tournament), the Lions were home for the first time under new coach Paul Missavage and a trio of freshmen. It proved to be a result St. Viator fans would like see to see many more times in the future. Led by 5-foot-7 freshman guard Maya Clark’s game-high 16 points, St. Viator rolled past Johnsburg 45-19 in the nonconference test.

    Fresh off his individual championship last weekend at the wrestling invitational hosted by Guerin, senior Brandon Suchyta led a late St. Viator charge to defeat Loyola Academy and give the Lions a clean sweep of two other foes Tuesday night in Arlington Heights. Suchyta’s pin at 2:22 in the final bout of the evening gave the hosts a 42-37 win over the Ramblers to even the Lions’ record at 3-3-0. That helped ease the sting of a tough start for Jason Churak’s team, which travels to South Elgin this weekend for its biggest test to date.

    It was next man up for St. Viator on Saturday, and Nick Ferrante showed that he was more than ready for the challenge. With a depleted Viator squad, Ferrante, who saw minimal playing time last year as a junior, stepped up big for the the Lions. He scored a career-high 11 points and had 8 rebounds as St. Viator held off a late rally by Prospect to persevere 43-40 Saturday in Arlington Heights. St. Viator (4-0) was able to claim the title of the 38th annual Joe Majkowski St. Viator basketball tournament for the first time in two years after losing the title last year to Prospect.

    Despite its lofty record a year ago, St. Viator’s boys basketball team struggled throughout the season on the defensive end. This season, without quite the same offensive firepower as a year ago, St. Viator and new coach Quin Hayes have emphasized the importance of defense. And their lesson has seem to taken hold as the Lions held Highland Park scoreless for over 10 minutes in the first half and came up with a huge stop at the end as the Lions held off the Giants 48-46 Friday in Arlington Heights.

    Conant has a lot of height, but it was St. Viator standing tall after their Wednesday night matchup in the Joe Majkowski Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament. St. Viator’s experience, tenacious defense, quickness and ball movement all paid off as the Lions rallied for a 53-42 win.

    Taylor Will went out in style after competing at the York girls basketball tournament for the past four years. The Prospect senior helped lead the Knights to their second straight tourney championship as they wrapped up 4-0 showing with Wednesday’s 70-45 victory over Wheaton North in Elmhurst. Will’s game-high 29 points moved her into second place (1,323 points) on Prospect’s all-time scoring list behind Colleen Grant (1,352).
