  • Streak-busters Rosary claim SCC title May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
As she got ready to take the field Saturday, Rosary keeper Lauren Frasca reminded the officials that she had things to do in the afternoon the intimation being that she didn't want to be there for long. And yet Frasca and her teammates spent the maximum amount of time on their home field for the conclusion of the May 3 contest stopped by thunderstorms with 32:17 left in the second half. Originally played at Glenbard South, Saturday's finale took place at Rosary though the Royals played in Blue and were the road team, as they were in the original portion of the match. And when the match ended after a scoreless completion to the second half, two scoreless overtimes and a penalty kick shootout — it was 1-0 to Rosary (15-3-3, 9-0), earning the team its first conference title since 2007.

  • Marmion wins sixth straight SCC title May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
The odds were stacked overwhelmingly against the nearest Marmion pursuers Saturday morning and afternoon in Wheaton. The Cadets, unblemished in regular-season Suburban Christian Conference boys tennis dual meets, were seeking a sixth consecutive league championship. Marmion was almost as flawless at St. Francis during the conference tournament, scoring 13 out of a possible 15 points by capturing all three doubles championships and second singles en route to 20 total points.

  • Glenbard South seniors claim fourth straight sectional May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
With 17 seniors on his team, Glenbard South coach Mark Tacchi knows the Raiders might struggle a little next year. But he's enjoying this group too much to worry about that. • Naperville North girls water polo coach Andy McWhirter will be inducted into the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame in Elmhurst on May 28.

To McWhirter, recognition is always all about the kidsMay 8, 2013 12:00 AM
It's obvious Naperville North girls water polo coach Andy McWhirter prefers talking about his team, players past and present and the growth of the sport than about being inducted into the Illinois Water Polo Hall of Fame in Elmhurst May 28.

  • Marmion Academy’s Tyler Maryanski muscles his way over the high jump bar set at 6 feet five inches for first place Wednesday at the Suburban Christian Conference boys track meet at Aurora Central Catholic.

Marmion handles pressure, wins SCC againMay 8, 2013 12:00 AM
There's nothing wrong with a little pressure. Marmion's John Graft felt it Wednesday. Set to launch into the 1,600-meter run he was told that with a win the Cadets could clinch the Suburban Christian Conference boys track and field championship. On the home track of Marmion's greatest conference rival, no less, Aurora Central Catholic.

  • Head coach Ralph Remus is all smiles as Alyssa Fernandez comes home after hitting a game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the 7th against Montini Catholic during girls softball on Monday in Wheaton.

Fernandez comes through for St. Francis May 6, 2013 12:00 AM
It was no secret to Alyssa Fernandez that Montini was making every effort to pitch her carefully short of an intentional walk. Only one problem, though. "I think what they don't realize is I really like low and inside pitches," said the St. Francis senior. "They kept pitching me inside. I don't think they caught on." And for that, Fernandez made it hurt. With two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh, Fernandez hit a two-run walk-off homer — her second of the game — the Spartans rallying for a dramatic 6-5 win in Monday's matchup of Suburban Christian Conference Blue leaders in Wheaton.

  • Remaining SCC schools left with uncertain future May 2, 2013 12:00 AM
The question is, Now what? In the wake of the Metro Suburban Conference Board of Control's unanimous vote Wednesday to accept seven current Suburban Christian Conference schools effective the 2014-15 academic year, it leaves Montini, St. Francis, Marmion, Rosary, Aurora Christian and Marian Central taken by surprise and twisting in the wind.

  • Rosary, St. Francis can’t settle SCC yet May 2, 2013 12:00 AM
It wasn't that Rosary and St. Francis didn't try to get Thursday's key Suburban Christian Conference match played. In fact the Royals and Spartans tried mightily to get their match at Glenbard South finished. But thunder and lightning and the prospect that those conditions would not relent eventually led to the match being stopped after two lengthy delays — though nearly 50 minutes of scoreless game play was finished before the match was finally stopped with 32:17 left in the second half.

Rosary came away with a mini-version of Fort Knox Wednesday at home, scoring 38 out of a possible 40 points with three victories and a runner-up result. The Royals' relay dominance, bolstered by consistency in the other 14 events, enabled the squad to capture their first Suburban Christian Conference title in three years with 146.5 points in Aurora.
