    Holding St. Edward to just 15 points by the end of the third quarter, the Hampshire girls basketball team had hoped it would cruise to victory in the semifinals of the Holiday Cage Classic at Lisle. But the Whip-Purs had to hold off a Green Wave rally in the final frame before coming out with a 49-37 victory Monday night.

    Cary-Grove 44, Mundelein 27: Katie Barker became the eighth player in C-G girls basketball history to score 1,000 career points in the Trojans’ (7-8) win at the Mundelein Holiday Tournament. Barker led all scorers with 16 points.

    The St. Edward girls basketball team proved it is more than just a one person show on Saturday night. Six 6-foot-3 Cece Rapp plays a huge role on both ends of the court for the Green Wave, but when the senior got into foul trouble early against visiting St. Viator it was up to the rest of her teammates to carry the load. They did just that, prevailing with a 43-30 nonconference win over the Lions in Elgin. Sophomore Madelyn Spagnola led the way with a game-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

     
  • St. Edward survives Aurora Central Catholic’s charge Dec 19, 2014 10:50 PM
    Aurora Central Catholic threw everything it had at St. Edward in the fourth quarter Friday — a little full-court pressure, some Mario May down low and a lot of Brett Czerak hitting shots seemingly from the parking lot. St. Edward had an answer for it all, all 35 of the fourth-quarter points the Chargers put on the scoreboard. Sophomore Kelvin Cortez-Harvey proved to be the most clutch, making all 6 of his free throws, while his mates in the three-guard lineup Gino Domel and Joseph French handled the Chargers’ pressure and sixth man Danny Favela added a key tip-in in the final minute of the Green Wave’s 74-70 victory.

    St. Edward football coach Mike Rolando was recently honored as the Athletico Phyiscal Therapy Coach of the Year, an award he received on Dec. 6 during the Big Ten championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

    Five teams who are currently undefeated highlight the field for the 32nd Charger Classic Christmas girls basketball tournament at Dundee-Crown, which kicks off on Friday, Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. Prospect, Hononegah, Stevenson, Burlington Central and New Trier have yet to lose this season. Defending champion New Trier and runner-up Prospect are on opposite ends of the bracket, while Burlington Central would meet New Trier in the quarterfinals if the Rockets get past Bartlett in the first round and New Trier defeats the host Chargers.

    Three area football players were named $5,000 college tuition scholarship recipients by the National Football Foundation on Tuesday. Seniors Chris Kelly of St. Edward Central Catholic in Elgin, Noah Frazier of Batavia and Matt Rahn of Aurora Central Catholic will be honored at the NFF Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall in Lake Forest on Feb. 16.

    When Glenbard South 6-foot-4 senior Sydney Bauman went to the bench with her fourth foul with 7:05 left in the third quarter Tuesday night, St. Edward fans had a good feeling. After all, that left Green Wave 6-3 senior Cece Rapp towering over everyone else on the court. But the Raiders turned on the speed and the defense and outlasted St. Edward 45-36 in Glen Ellyn in a battle of two of the top girls basketball teams in the Metro Suburban West.

    St. Edward senior guard Joe French had no explanation why he went so cold after a hot-shooting opening quarter against Glenbard South Tuesday in Elgin. But French had no problem joking with forward Nick Duffy about whose shot was bigger down the stretch in St. Edward’s come-from-behind 63-59 overtime win over the Raiders in the teams’ first Metro Suburban West showdown.
