  • Unexpected good pitching at core of Bartlett’s surge May 4, 2013 12:00 AM
The odds did not favor Bartlett having another strong softball season back in March. The Hawks had plenty of talent returning from their 2012 Class 4A state runner-up team, but they lost an all-state catcher to injury and they had about 6 innings of varsity pitching experience returning. But here it is May a year later and, yep, there's Bartlett surging again. The Hawks are 18-6 overall and 9-2 in the Upstate Eight Conference, currently a game ahead of the pack in the Valley Division.

  • St. Edward High School football coach Mike Rolando will be leading the Green Wave into a new conference, the Metro Suburban, beginning in 2014.

St. Edward’s exit from the SCC another sign of the times May 2, 2013 12:00 AM
We all know times have changed. There's evidence of it every day in every walk of life. The Upstate Eight Conference recently came full circle, in a manner of speaking, when it accepted West Aurora and Glenbard East to rejoin the league those schools were charter members of 50 years ago when the conference was formed. On Thursday, the official word came that St. Edward is among seven schools that have been accepted to join the Metro Suburban Conference in the fall of 2014, effectively bringing to an end one of the longest standing group of schools in the same conference anywhere in the state. Originally the West Suburban Catholic, then the Suburban Catholic, the league became the Suburban Christian Conference in 2009 when Aurora Christian, Walther Lutheran, Guerin, Chicago Christian and Wheaton Academy joined.

Rosary rides its depth to win SCC May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
At a girls track and field invitational, the four relays are worth their weight in gold. Rosary came away with a mini-version of Fort Knox Wednesday at home, scoring 38 out of a possible 40 points with three victories and a runner-up result. The Royals' relay dominance, bolstered by consistency in the other 14 events, enabled the squad to capture their first Suburban Christian Conference title in three years with 146.5 points in Aurora.

  • Huntley offense explodes May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
The prolific Huntley offense was up to its old tricks again Wednesday. One day after they were shut out for the first time this season by Jacobs pitcher Evan Blunk in a 1-0 loss, the Red Raiders exploded for 19 hits in a 19-10 nonconference victory at Lake Zurich, marking the sixth game this season Huntley (18-3) has scored 16 runs or more.

Bekah Harnish had 3 hits including a double for BC (16-1, 8-0), which won its 13th straight.

  • Rosary falls in semifinals of own tournament Apr 27, 2013 12:00 AM
In a spring that's been highlighted by cold, damp weather, Rosary's girls soccer invitational took place Saturday on the warmest playing date of the season. That's great for people looking to work on a sun tan, not so good for players enduring a long day of running, tackling and shooting. The Royals advanced to the semifinals before being eliminated in their own tournament, which was eventually won by Plainfield South, 1-0 victors over Willows in the title game. In a tournament where the format is that all matches consist of 20-minute halves, Rosary (10-3-3) raced through its pool play. The Royals defeated Joliet West 3-0, tied Plainfield South 0-0 and defeated Joliet Catholic 1-0. A number of the Royals were then excused to prepare for the Marmion Academy Salute to Youth Dinner Dance.

  • Elgin finishes third at Larkin Slugfest Apr 27, 2013 12:00 AM
Elgin has never won the Larkin Slugfest softball tournament. On Saturday, the Maroons had a chance to play for the 20th annual tournament's championship at the Elgin Sports Complex but let it slip away in the final two innings of a 3-2 loss in eight innings to Joliet West in the semifinals. Elgin did come back to beat St. Edward 10-4 and claim third place, going 2-1 on the day after beating Mt. Assisi 10-8 in the opening round.

  • Widmayer, Hampshire shut down St. Edward Apr 26, 2013 12:00 AM
First-year Hampshire softball coach Stacey Stepek has been trying to instill in her team that good pitching, good defense and timely hitting is what wins games. On Friday, the Whip-Purs put all three together and snapped a 6-game losing streak in the process. Sophomore Haley Widmayer struck out a career-high 11 batters and allowed just 3 hits, while Jordan Hook and Becca Hurst homered in a 7-run fourth inning as Hampshire defeated St. Edward 7-2 in a nonconference game at Hampshire.
