  • St. Edward racks up 3rd straight 20-win season Feb 7, 2015 1:26 AM
It took a couple of seasons for coach PJ White to get the St. Edward boys basketball program pointed in the right direction, but its upward momentum is undeniable. St. Edward went 7-20 in 2010-11, the first year White, also the school’s athletic director, took over as coach after Keith Chuipek’s departure. The Green Wave improved to 11-17 the following season, a mere harbinger of good things to come. With Friday’s 63-49 Metro Suburban West home victory over Wheaton Academy, St. Edward (20-3, 8-1) reached 20 wins for the third consecutive season. Since 2012-13, the program has won 60 games while losing only 20.

  • Elgin CC enjoying one of most successful seasons Feb 5, 2015 10:46 AM
Don’t expect the Elgin Community College men’s basketball players to start walking around with big heads now that the Spartans have cracked the top 20 national rankings. Checking egos at the door is the main reason this team is ranked in the first place. ECC (18-6), the No. 20 team in the Feb. 3 NJCAA Division II poll, is enjoying success because the Spartans enjoy sharing the ball, not to mention the credit, their coach says.

However, the Knights were determined not to let that happen again on Tuesday night in the rematch. Rapp got in early foul trouble and was ineffective the rest of the game as she managed just 4 points. IC took full advantage as it went on to a 37-25 girls basketball win on the road in Metro Suburban West action.

  • Freshmen making their mark in Fox Valley Jan 22, 2015 1:31 PM
A varsity basketball coach’s decision to play freshmen has its pros and cons. Sometimes a coach’s hand is willfully forced by the sheer athleticism or size of an incoming freshman.
