  • St. Edward makes it look easy in sectional semisMay 20, 2014 12:00 AM
In games where weather delays can get considerably lengthy, teams that had the momentum are prone to losing their mojo a bit. But it appears not even Mother Nature can slow up St. Edward’s girls soccer team these days. Even after a 50-minute first-half lightning delay, the Green Wave managed to pad their early 3-goal lead with 6 more in the final 19 minutes of the first half in a 9-0 Class 1A Richmond-Burton sectional semifinal win over Woodlands Academy Tuesday.

Ryan Sargent tossed a 5-hitter with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts, and Tim Hubner, Matt Kozlak and Brenden Heiss each drove in runs as the Jacobs baseball team defeated Cary-Grove 3-1 on Monday. The victory kept Jacobs (20-11, 13-4), which has never won a title in the Fox Valley Conference, tied for first place in the Valley Division with Huntley with 2 games remaining.

Huntley, Cary-Grove split: After taking a 3-1 loss to start the day thanks to a rain-shortened makeup, the Red Raiders (17-14, 7-5) rebounded and won 6-2 to close out the day in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action.

  • Westminster Christian’s Clay DeHaan delivers against St. Edward Monday in the Class 2A regional game at Wing Park in Elgin.

Westminster Christian ousts St. EdwardMay 19, 2014 12:00 AM
There was little question entering Monday’s Class 2A regional quarterfinal that Westminster Christian senior Clay DeHaan and St. Edward junior Jack Tierney were each talented enough to pitch their respective teams to a playoff win. DeHaan entered with an ERA of 2.93 in 45⅓ innings; Tierney with a 2.33 ERA in 39. The question was which pitcher’s defense would support him best in light of the 148 combined errors their teams committed during the regular season. Both pitchers acquitted themselves admirably in a battle between Elgin private schools, but DeHaan’s Warriors defended better in a 5-2 victory.

South Elgin’s push for a title in the Upstate Eight Conference’s Valley Division was dealt a blow Saturday with a pair of 1-run losses at West Chicago. The Storm entered the doubleheader trailing division-leading Waubonsie Valley by a game in the loss column, but they dropped the opener 6-5 when the Wildcats rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Austin Sayre. Nick Menken had the only multihit game for the Storm.

Zdroik perfect as St. Edward wins 3May 17, 2014 12:00 AM
Things are coming together for the St. Edward softball team and with the postseason right around the corner, the timing couldn’t be better. The Green Wave made it wins in 8 of their last 10 games Saturday when they racked up a triple-header win, beating Indian Creek 10-0 an 4-1 in a nonconference twin bill, then defeating Aurora Christian 19-0 in a rescheduled Suburban Christian Conference game on Senior Day at Judson University. Green Wave sophomore Lindsay Zdroik fired a five-inning perfect game against Aurora Christian, striking out 9. She also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple and 2 RBI.

    A regional 4-peat for St. EdwardMay 16, 2014 12:00 AM
St. Edward center-mid Corey Lepoudre admitted during Friday’s Class 1A Westminster regional final that the Green Wave girls soccer team had a plan to avoid all the puddles on a soaked Warrior Field. Unfortunately, maybe for dry cleaning purposes only, that game plan went quickly out the window. “I think we started running through the puddles instead,” said Lepoudre, who noted you couldn’t power the ball through as you would on a dry field. “It was ok. We handled it pretty well.” And that St. Edward did. Despite the fact the field mirrored a giant slip-’n-slide and every girl had at least one mud stain on her jersey, it took St. Edward (22-2) 11 missed shots in the first 16 minutes to figure out the muddy surface in a 6-0 win over Westminster for its fourth-straight regional championship.

Little change to Fox Valley postseasonMay 16, 2014 12:00 AM
New location, same teams. The Class 4A baseball sectional held last season at Huntley shifts to McHenry this year, but little else has changed. Three of the four regionals within the sectional complex contain the same five teams and the fourth has only one lineup alteration, according to pairings released this week.

Marmion makes it 9 straight SCC titlesMay 14, 2014 12:00 AM
At the end of the 400-meter run, Marmion senior Andrew Grahovec sprinted right behind his twin brother, Kevin, drawing a laugh just before they finished in third and fourth place. “He didn’t know I was there till I got up to him,” Andrew Grahovec said. “Then we both laughed because it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s us.’” Yes it was. Marmion won eight events, double-scored in 11 and scored in all 18 events, the landslide winner of the Suburban Christian Conference boys track meet Wednesday at Aurora Central Catholic’s Bob Stewart Field.

  • Controlling out of control games no easy task for any coachMay 14, 2014 12:00 AM
What’s a coach to do? Your team is ahead of the opponent, say, 12-0 after two innings. You know if your team keeps playing it straight at it might be 20-0, or worse, by the time the fifth inning rolls around and the slaughter rule takes effect. So what’s a coach to do? Some will say tough, that’s the way it is, and do nothing except let the game play out. Others will have runners leave early, or bunt back to the pitcher, or have their hitters intentionally swing at bad pitches — anything to get it over quicker and not embarrass the other team.
