  • St. Edward advances to 2A sectional final Mar 4, 2015 11:10 PM
It was far from a thing of beauty but at this point of the season beauty isn’t necessary. St. Edward’s boys basketball team overcame its own struggles at the free throw line by clamping down on defense, which led to a 39-36 win over Fieldcrest Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Class 2A El Paso-Gridley sectional.

  • Sectional semifinal has St. Edward on brink of history Mar 3, 2015 5:02 PM
The St. Edward boys basketball team can stamp itself among the most successful in program history with one more victory. The Green Wave (24-5) face Fieldcrest in a Class 2A El Paso-Gridley sectional semifinal on Wednesday at 7 p.m. A 25th win would put the 2014-15 team in elite company. Since the program’s inception in 1944-45, only three St. Edward squads have won 25 games in a season: coach Bob Fuller’s 25-3 Class A state qualifier in 1971-72; coach Jack McKiel’s 25-2 regional title team in 1972-73; and coach Joe Tullo’s 25-6 Class A state qualifier in 1986-87.

  • First regional title for St. Edward since 2009 Feb 28, 2015 12:03 AM
If it’s tough to beat a team twice in a season, imagine what St. Edward’s boys basketball team faced in trying to knock of IC Catholic Prep for a fourth time in a showdown that meant more than the previous three games combined. The Green Wave did it again, pulling out a 41-40 victory in Friday’s Class 2A Lisle regional title game. St. Edward (24-5), a regional champion for the first time since 2009 and a win shy of matching the program record for wins in a season, faces Fieldcrest in Wednesday’s El Paso-Gridley sectional semifinals.

  • St. Edward breaks regional drought, will play for title Feb 24, 2015 10:41 PM
History has a way of playing on the nerves. Aware the St. Edward boys basketball program had not won a playoff game since its 2008-09 regional championship season, the top-seeded Green Wave found themselves trailing No. 4 Chicago Christian by a point through the first eight minutes of Tuesday’s Class 2A Lisle regional semifinal. However, as St. Edward coach P.J. White would later put it, his team’s eventual 65-39 victory was “just a matter of getting the jitters out.”

For one shining moment on Tuesday night, with 1:01 left on the clock in the first quarter, the spotlight was on St. Edward senior Nick Duffy. The crowd erupted when Duffy went up strong on a baseline drive for layup to surpass the 1,000 career point mark. However, the rest of the night belonged to Riverside-Brookfield senior Sam Johnson, who poured in a season-high 41 points to go with 13 rebounds, as he led the visiting Bulldogs to a 74-62 Metro Suburban West boys basketball victory.

  • Kaneland holds off St. Edward Feb 16, 2015 10:13 PM
When Kaneland’s girls basketball team needed a big shot Monday, the Knights turned to their only senior starter and she came through like, well, like a senior. Ally VanBogaert scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half, including hitting two big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, as Kaneland held off St. Edward 39-37 in the first round of the Class 3A Sycamore regional.

  • Rapp, Scully lead St. Edward by Wheaton Academy Feb 14, 2015 11:03 PM
St. Edward seniors Cece Rapp and Ryann Scully wanted to round out their careers at home in style Saturday and after their 61-50 Metro Suburban West win over Wheaton Academy on Senior Night, there was little doubt they left it all on the court in their final send-off in Elgin.

  • St. Edward rolls past Aurora Central Catholic Feb 13, 2015 11:45 PM
The 1,000 point watch for St. Edward senior Nick Duffy will continue for another game after the forward’s 10 points fell 3 shy of the mark in the Green Wave’s 63-38 boys basketball rout of Aurora Central Catholic Friday in Elgin. But as for the Wave’s Joe French is concerned, the Chargers may never want to see the game ever come to him again in Metro Suburban West action.

  • Dinkheller’s officiating career honored with IBCA Hall induction Feb 11, 2015 9:45 PM
Elgin resident Jim Dinkheller had modest goals when he enrolled in a basketball officiating class taught by late Elgin legend Pete Kovacs in 1980. Talked into the class by Kovacs, who taught the Elgin Community College-affiliated course at Elgin’s Kimball Middle School, Dinkheller figured he could officiate to stay in shape through the winter months and earn a little cash to boot. Little did the Larkin graduate know it would lead to a 34-year officiating career and his eventual induction to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The longtime referee learned last month he is one of eight officials slated for induction at this year’s IBCA banquet in May, a level of recognition he never expected.
