  • St. Edward’s girls soccer team returns to the sideline after beating Westminster Christian in the Class 1A Westminster regional final Saturday. Alyssa Saunders (9) and Stephanie Manghas (17) celebrate in the middle.

    It’s a regional 3-peat for St. Edward May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Like a freight train with a full head of steam, once the St. Edward girls soccer team got its engine into gear during Saturday's Class 1A regional final at Westminster Christian, the Green Wave were hard to stop. Even a slick field that provided early trouble couldn't derail the top-seeded Green Wave, who won their third-straight regional title, easily beating No. 3 Westminster Christian 7-0 in Elgin Saturday afternoon. But unlike other years, the celebration was short-lived since the Wave's focus is on a much greater prize.

St. Edward, Westminster prepared for 2A postseason May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
Aurora Central Catholic stands between the baseball teams from St. Edward and Westminster Christian and the postseason prize each seeks. ACC (25-5) is the top seed at the Class 2A Westminster Christian regional, which begins Monday with No. 5 North Boone facing No. 4 Westminster Christian (10-9) in a play-in game at 4:30 p.m. A win by the young Warriors would advance them to a Wednesday semifinal against ACC at 4:30 p.m. Westminster and ACC split a nonconference doubleheader at the same Elgin venue Saturday afternoon. The Warriors won the first game 6-5, but ACC pitcher Drew Riedy shut the Warriors out 11-0 on 2 hits in the nightcap.

  • Cary-Grove’s Stanley throws no-hitter May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
Junior Lauren Stanley had her best outing since taking over the circle for injured senior Lindsay Efflandt, throwing a no-hitter Friday as Cary-Grove's softball team defeated Dundee-Crown 1-0 in a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game at Cary-Grove. Stanley (7-3) struck out 7 and walked 1 as the Trojans (18-3, 9-2) remained in a first-place tie in the Valley with McHenry and Prairie Ridge. Cary-Grove plays at PR Monday.

Marmion handles pressure, wins SCC againMay 8, 2013 12:00 AM
There's nothing wrong with a little pressure. Marmion's John Graft felt it Wednesday. Set to launch into the 1,600-meter run he was told that with a win the Cadets could clinch the Suburban Christian Conference boys track and field championship. On the home track of Marmion's greatest conference rival, no less, Aurora Central Catholic.

  • Hampshire’s Elizabeth Pagan competes in the long jump during the Fox Valley Conference girls track meet Monday at Grayslake Central High School.

Hampshire putting it all together May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
In years past, while Hampshire's Patti Nihells, one of the longest-tenured area girls track coaches, may not have had the largest teams but she's always had talented individual athletes both on the track and in the field events. This year, Hampshire is enjoying the best of both worlds. The Whip-Purs are fresh off winning the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division team title in only their second year in the conference. Hampshire, which finished third overall in the 14-team FVC meet, will look to continue that season-long success at Friday's Class 2A Burlington Central sectional. At the sectional level, the top two place-finishers in each event and any individual or relay team equaling or surpassing the minimum state-qualifying standard in each event advance to the state finals in Charleston at Eastern Illinois University.

  • St. Edward opens postseason on a mission May 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The St. Edward girls soccer team is well aware of what happened in last year's postseason. After a 1-0 loss to Lisle in a Class 1A sectional final that prevented the Green Wave a state final appearance, they would like some redemption this spring. But when the Green Wave broke out of coach Tim Brieger's huddle prior to the start of the Class 1A regional semifinal at Westminster Christian on Tuesday and formed another huddle of their own, you could tell they meant business after posing the notion of setting the tone early and getting a 7-goal win in the process. Consider the tone set after the top-seeded Green Wave had 7 different goal scorers on 24 shots en route to an 8-0 win over No. 4 Elgin Academy in Elgin.

  • Unexpected good pitching at core of Bartlett’s surge May 4, 2013 12:00 AM
The odds did not favor Bartlett having another strong softball season back in March. The Hawks had plenty of talent returning from their 2012 Class 4A state runner-up team, but they lost an all-state catcher to injury and they had about 6 innings of varsity pitching experience returning. But here it is May a year later and, yep, there's Bartlett surging again. The Hawks are 18-6 overall and 9-2 in the Upstate Eight Conference, currently a game ahead of the pack in the Valley Division.

  • St. Edward High School football coach Mike Rolando will be leading the Green Wave into a new conference, the Metro Suburban, beginning in 2014.

St. Edward’s exit from the SCC another sign of the times May 2, 2013 12:00 AM
We all know times have changed. There's evidence of it every day in every walk of life. The Upstate Eight Conference recently came full circle, in a manner of speaking, when it accepted West Aurora and Glenbard East to rejoin the league those schools were charter members of 50 years ago when the conference was formed. On Thursday, the official word came that St. Edward is among seven schools that have been accepted to join the Metro Suburban Conference in the fall of 2014, effectively bringing to an end one of the longest standing group of schools in the same conference anywhere in the state. Originally the West Suburban Catholic, then the Suburban Catholic, the league became the Suburban Christian Conference in 2009 when Aurora Christian, Walther Lutheran, Guerin, Chicago Christian and Wheaton Academy joined.

Rosary rides its depth to win SCC May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
At a girls track and field invitational, the four relays are worth their weight in gold. Rosary came away with a mini-version of Fort Knox Wednesday at home, scoring 38 out of a possible 40 points with three victories and a runner-up result. The Royals' relay dominance, bolstered by consistency in the other 14 events, enabled the squad to capture their first Suburban Christian Conference title in three years with 146.5 points in Aurora.

  • Huntley offense explodes May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
The prolific Huntley offense was up to its old tricks again Wednesday. One day after they were shut out for the first time this season by Jacobs pitcher Evan Blunk in a 1-0 loss, the Red Raiders exploded for 19 hits in a 19-10 nonconference victory at Lake Zurich, marking the sixth game this season Huntley (18-3) has scored 16 runs or more.
