2012-2013 Fox Valley Academic Team Jun 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Imagine getting straight A's in every class, all four years of high school. Now combine that with leadership, extracurriculars, and a desire to apply one's knowledge in a way that benefits others, and you've got the kind of student who gets named to the Daily Herald's 2012-13 Fox Valley Academic Team. "Success is not about how much money we make or how many square feet our houses are, but rather how many lives we can improve by helping others," writes Arjun Tambe of Illinois Math and Science Academy.

Lepoudre one tough customer for St. Edward Jun 6, 2013 12:00 AM
At halftime of St Edward’s 3-1 Class 1A supersectional loss to Francis Parker on May 21, Green Wave girls soccer coach Tim Brieger had the unenviable task of telling junior midfielder Corey Lepoudre she was out for the second half because calf cramps throughout the first 40 minutes essentially left her on one leg. “I told her after the first half, ‘you’re done,’ ” said Brieger, which Lepoudre countered, “’Nah, nah, give me a minute, give me a minute,’” she said. “I can go, I can go.” Brieger eventually caved and Lepoudre returned when a key opportunity arrived in the 73rd minute on a left-side free kick the Green Wave so desperately needed, facing a 2-1 deficit. Although her shot from about 19 yards out never developed in front of the net and St. Edward lost in the Elite Eight for the second-straight year, it wasn’t what ultimately removed Lepoudre from the field. With a little under 5 minutes remaining in the game, the junior’s infamous cramps flared up once more and Lepoudre fell to the Concordia University turf in agony.

Taking a look back, and ahead, at Fox Valley softball May 30, 2013 12:00 AM
I had a softball player on one of my summer teams for a few years — Lauren Ott was her name — and every time something out of the ordinary would happen in a game she'd say, "That's weird." Which was exactly my thought when the last out was made at the sectional semifinal between Glenbard North and South Elgin in St. Charles Wednesday. That Storm loss brought to a close the 2013 softball season for the 14 schools we cover from the Fox Valley bureau and, well, as Lauren always put it, that's weird. It's the first time since 2006 our little corner of the world didn't have a team advance to at least the sectional final round of the state tournament series.

C-G’s Hurley sticks with it, makes shot and discus finals May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
The pressure was off, as far as Cary-Grove sophomore Ricky Hurley was concerned. On his second throw during the shot put competition at the Class 3A session of the boys track and field state championships at Eastern Illinois University and O'Brien Field, Hurley launched the shot a personal-best 55-3.25 to secure a spot in Saturday's finals. His effort was the fifth-best toss of the preliminary round. He also advanced to Saturday's discus finals.

Heartbreak again for St. Edward May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
This might be the worst case of déjà vu for the St. Edward girls soccer team. For the second year in a row, the Green Wave was oh so close to a trip to the IHSA Class 1A state Final Four. But just as it happened last year in the sectional final against Lisle, the season ended in heartbreak for coach Tim Brieger’s team. Francis Parker was this year’s Lisle, coming from behind to beat the Green Wave 3-1 in the Concordia University supersectional in River Forest Tuesday. The IHSA added a supersectional round to Class 1A girls soccer this year for the first time.

Aurora CC takes regional from St. Edward May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
The Aurora Central Catholic baseball team had already seized momentum and the lead with a 3-run fourth inning, but the phantom defensive play the Chargers pulled off in the top of the fifth became the defining moment of their 4-2 victory over St. Edward in the Class 2A Westminster Christian regional Aurora championship game Saturday. No. 2 St. Edward (16-9) trailed by 2 runs but had a runner at second base with one out when ACC ace Matt Miller faked a pickoff throw to second base, forcing the runner to dive back to the bag head first. However, the ball never left Miller's mitt.
