Huntley closing on on FVC Valley 3-peat Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The Huntley boys basketball team is on the verge of completing a Fox Valley Conference three-peat. The Red Raiders (15-6, 9-0) can wrap up their third straight FVC Valley Division title tonight with a win against second-place Dundee-Crown (16-5, 7-2) in Carpentersville. Huntley defeated the Chargers 45-38 on Jan. 19. “This is a big week for us in terms of our goals and where we stand going into the playoffs,” senior forward Amanze Egekeze said after Wednesday’s victory at Crystal Lake South. “We know we’ve got to go on the road, play at a high level, execute and get better with each game.”

  • St. Edward’s depth does in Marian Central Feb 6, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Edward boys basketball coach P.J. White has two things most coaches would die to have on their teams: depth and balance. They're two significant pieces of success for the Green Wave this season and when White saw two key players have off nights in Elgin Wednesday night, there wasn't any worry. In the Green Wave's 60-48 Suburban Christian Gold Blue win over Marian Central (3-23, 2-6), Anotnio Domel, Danny Favela and John Butzow carried the slack. Butzow poured in a game-high 15 points while Favela scored 13 and led the team in rebounds with 9. As for Domel, he had 9 points and 4 assists as the three spearheaded the Green Wave's full-court defense, a major problem for Marian Central in the first half.

    Elgin-Larkin, Jacobs vs. Dundee-Crown set to go Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fox Valley area’s two fiercest boys basketball rivalries have produced the season’s two best games to date. Larkin has defeated crosstown rival Elgin twice this season, most recently a 60-51 victory in the Elgin Holiday Tournament title game. But it was the first meeting — Larkin’s 76-73 double-overtime victory on Dec 12 — that will go down as one of the best in the history of the 121-game series, which Elgin still leads 79-42. Not to be outdone, Jacobs and Dundee-Crown battled through two overtimes on Jan. 15 before the Golden Eagles prevailed 76-66. Host Jacobs tied that game at the regulation buzzer when senior Nick Ledinsky drained a step-back 3-pointer from the corner.

  • Conant’s Sarah Starzynski is happy with her performance on the uneven parallel bars at Thursday’s Conant regional.

Conant’s Starzynski, Prairie Ridge impress at regional Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
Conant was looking for a lift at its own regional on Thursday night, and the Cougars got one from senior Sarah Starzynski. Starzynski missed over a month due to a broken wrist, but the Cougar senior didn’t miss much on Thursday. Limited to two events, Starzynski made the most of them, taking third on the beam (9.025) and tying for sixth on the bars (8.925) in leading the Cougars to a second-place finish with 139.0 points in Hoffman Estates. Conant advanced to the Fremd sectional on Monday night at 6:30 p.m by securing the second at-large bid. Sophomore Rachael Underwood (37.60) and sophomore Riley Mahoney (37.225) went 1-2 in the all-around in propelling Prairie Ridge co-op to the regional title with an impressive 147.175.

  • Walther Lutheran runs past St. Edward Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
The St. Edward boys basketball team didn't want to play a fast-paced game Tuesday night against Walther Lutheran. It happened though and it cost the Green Wave. The Broncos picked up the pace late in the first quarter to rally from an 18-9 deficit to beat the host Green Wave, 75-54.

  • Cary-Grove’s Joslyn Nicholson, left, looks to pass against Stevenson last week.

Burlington Central’s kiddie corps has exceeded expectations Jan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
It's been well chronicled that Burlington Central girls basketball coach Mark Smith knew he had some talent coming in when he took the Rockets' head coaching job. And Smith knows talent. His daughter, Kelsey, plays at DePaul and as a boys baskeball coach for several seasons at St. Charles North, as well as a former high school and college player himself, Smith knows good players when he sees them. But even Smith admits being surprised at how well his freshman-laden team has done this season. At 19-4 overall and having secured their first Big Northern East championship since 2006-07, the Rockets also cracked the Daily Herald Top 20 this week for the first time this season, and they're the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 3A regional that they will host. Central has not won a girls basketball regional since 1990 and has only three regional banners in program history.

  • St. Edward upends Montini Jan 25, 2013 12:00 AM
The Green Wave joined the Gold rush Friday. The Gold Division of the Suburban Christian Conference boys basketball race is up for grabs with 3 games left in the wake of host St. Edward's 68-64 comeback victory over first-place Montini. Montini led 31-23 at halftime, but St. Edward (17-4, 5-2) kept the Broncos guessing by switching defenses with regularity throughout the second half. The Wave forced 8 of Montini's 16 turnovers in the third quarter to draw even, 41-41, heading to the final period.

  • St. Edward falls short vs. Bishop Mac Jan 24, 2013 12:00 AM
A 3½-minute stretch in the first half Thursday night was costly to the St. Edward girls basketball team. Bishop McNamara took advantage of numerous Green Wave turnovers to go on a 15-0 run to break open a tie game. The Irish went on to beat St. Edward, 54-43, in nonconference play in Elgin.
