  • Charger Classic at Dundee-Crown loaded again Dec 17, 2014 8:42 PM
    Five teams who are currently undefeated highlight the field for the 32nd Charger Classic Christmas girls basketball tournament at Dundee-Crown, which kicks off on Friday, Dec. 26 at 10 a.m. Prospect, Hononegah, Stevenson, Burlington Central and New Trier have yet to lose this season. Defending champion New Trier and runner-up Prospect are on opposite ends of the bracket, while Burlington Central would meet New Trier in the quarterfinals if the Rockets get past Bartlett in the first round and New Trier defeats the host Chargers.

    Three area football players were named $5,000 college tuition scholarship recipients by the National Football Foundation on Tuesday. Seniors Chris Kelly of St. Edward Central Catholic in Elgin, Noah Frazier of Batavia and Matt Rahn of Aurora Central Catholic will be honored at the NFF Chicago Metro Chapter Awards Ceremony at Halas Hall in Lake Forest on Feb. 16.

    When Glenbard South 6-foot-4 senior Sydney Bauman went to the bench with her fourth foul with 7:05 left in the third quarter Tuesday night, St. Edward fans had a good feeling. After all, that left Green Wave 6-3 senior Cece Rapp towering over everyone else on the court. But the Raiders turned on the speed and the defense and outlasted St. Edward 45-36 in Glen Ellyn in a battle of two of the top girls basketball teams in the Metro Suburban West.

    St. Edward senior guard Joe French had no explanation why he went so cold after a hot-shooting opening quarter against Glenbard South Tuesday in Elgin. But French had no problem joking with forward Nick Duffy about whose shot was bigger down the stretch in St. Edward’s come-from-behind 63-59 overtime win over the Raiders in the teams’ first Metro Suburban West showdown.

    The St. Edward girls basketball team just keeps rolling along. The Green Wave improved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the Metro Suburban West Thursday night with a 57-48 win at Wheaton Academy. Cece Rapp led the way with a game-high 18 points while Kaitlyn Castoro registered 13 points in the win. Madelyn Spagnola also chipped in 12 points.

    It’s rare to find three defending state champion basketball teams under one roof, but that’s what fans can expect at the second annual Mac Irvin Diabetes Classic at Larkin on Saturday. The daylong event features three high-caliber boys games and the marquee matchup of the girls basketball season thus far between defending Class 3A champion Montini and Class 4A champion Whitney Young, the latter coached by Larkin graduate Corry Carter Irvin, sister of Larkin boys coach Deryn Carter.

    Ahead after the third quarter thanks to a long buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Joe French, St. Edward’s boys basketball team looked to have the momentum to close out a pesky Joliet Catholic Academy team in an already thrilling back-and-forth fare to that point. But it was not to be, as the Hilltoppers made enough clutch shots and free throws to sink the Green Wave 53-47 Thursday night in the 4th annual Burney Wilke Classic at Aurora Christian.

    Fremd senior Haley Gorecki has earned Daily Herald girls basketball MVP honors for her recent performances. The Duke-bound Gorecki led Fremd to the Lake Zurich tournament title and had 33 points in an overtime victory against a foe from Milwaukee.

    Fresh off winning the Dakota Thanksgiving Tournament last week the St. Edward girls basketball team didn’t miss a beat in its Metro Suburban West opener on Tuesday night. Senior Cece Rapp narrowly missed a triple double with 20 points, 10 blocks, and 7 rebounds to lead the Green Wave to a 54-35 win over visiting Fenton. St. Edward improved to 7-0 overall with the victory.
