  • 400-plus pianists celebrate 20th annual American Grands Jan. 24 Jan 7, 2015 4:49 PM
    Over 400 pianists of all ages and skill levels will perform during American Grands XX on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Elgin Community College Arts Center. It will be held at 1, 4 and 7 p.m. It will mark American Grands 20th anniversary. The pieces performed feature 24 pianists (two per piano) performing on stage at once on 12 grand pianos, provided by Cordogan's Pianoland, the events' sponsor since its inception.

     
  • Suburban Law Enforcement Academy Graduates Class of 52 Recruits Jan 7, 2015 5:44 PM
    The Suburban Law Enforcement Academy at College of DuPage recently graduated 52 recruits representing 39 police agencies in Northern Illinois. The ceremony honored the recruits for completing 12 weeks – 480 hours – of basic law enforcement officer training which began this past fall. Six special awards were presented to the recruits. Deputy Sheriff Justin Hill of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office was presented the Firearms Proficiency Award and the George Graves Award for being selected as the most distinguished recruit by his fellow officers in the class. Officer Gerard Gannon of the Round Lake Beach Police Department earned the Academic Achievement Award. Officer Brett Darst of the Northlake Police Department won the Best Overall Physical Fitness Award. Officer Jamie Goschey of the Batavia Police Department received the Most Improved Physical Fitness Award. Officer Andrew Switalski of the Evergreen Park Police Department earned the Leadership Award. All award winners received plaques with their names engraved. Trustee Dianne McGuire represented the College’s Board of Trustees. The keynote speaker was Chief Stephen Schmidt of the Elk Grove Police Department.     Local Girl Scouts will begin taking orders for the 2015 Girl Scout Cookie Program from Jan. 9-30. New this year is Rah-Rah Raisins, a cookie featuring whole grain oats, plump juicy raisins, and trendy Greek yogurt-flavored chunks. The team of flavors in this new, crisp cookie is likely to attract customers and increase sales. The rich, creamy taste of Greek yogurt has exploded in popularity over the last several years. And, in a national Girl Scout Cookie Survey, over 65 percent of participants indicated they wanted an oatmeal raisin Girl Scout Cookie.

     
  • Competing design teams share vision for St. Charles’ Fox River Jan 7, 2015 5:59 PM
    Two St. Charles aldermen joined the Active River Task Force to review proposals from development teams that want to make the Fox River the focus of the city's downtown this week. The proposals included an array of possibilities from art on the water to white water rafting, rowing and beach-like settings. More presentations will follow Thursday.

     
  • Woman stole $163,000 from St. Charles law firm Jan 7, 2015 5:38 PM
    A 48-year-old former Geneva resident was sentenced to four years in prison Wednesday after admitting to stealing $163,000 from a Kane County law firm from January 2011 through August 2011. Jordan E. Terry, now of Indiana, did not apologize for her actions and the victim believes she still has the money somewhere.

  • Police searching for two men who robbed St. Charles store Jan 5, 2015 12:48 PM
    No injuries were reported during a Sunday night robbery of a tobacco store in the 1500 block of East Main Street in St. Charles, authorities said.Two men armed with weapons entered the Tobacco and Gift Store, demanded a victim’s cellphone, and removed two items from a display case.

    The family of a 4-year-old boy who drowned last summer at a St. Charles country club are suing the club, saying it didn't have enough lifeguards on duty, lacked required first-aid equipment and didn't train or supervise lifeguards properly.

    More than 300 people attended the Convocation of Eagles at the Riverwoods Family Campus in St. Charles Saturday, recognizing the achievements and service of eight new Eagle Scouts. Many of the new Eagle scouts are current or prior students of St. Charles North High School or St. Charles East High School. “All who know you rejoice in your achievements,” said Scoutmaster Andy Rollins.
