Steel Beam efforts fail to dress up ‘Black Tie’ May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
On the surface, the conflicts in A.R. Gurney's 2011 off-Broadway comedy "Black Tie" can feel slight. But "Black Tie," now playing in its Chicago-area debut at Steel Beam in St. Charles, gradually takes on larger and more universal themes of tradition versus change that should resonate with anyone beyond the play's privileged East Coast family.

  • The St. Edward girls soccer team celebrates its Class 1A Westminster Christian sectional title over Willows Academy on Friday.

St. Edward savors Class 1A sectional title May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
You could sense the relief on the faces of St. Edward forward Allison Kruk and midfielder Corey Lepoudre when a Willows Academy player knocked a ball out of play late in the second half, a ball both looked at each other to get, but neither could. Kruk had been hit in the jaw by a ball earlier in the match and Lepoudre came off for her asthma at one point. And at the end of the Class 1A Westminster Christian sectional final, you could see the Green Wave were out of steam. Which is why there was good reason that Green Wave coach Tim Brieger asked his team in practice earlier this week to set the tone early against the Eagles. Gaining a measure of revenge over the team that beat them in the 2011 state third-place game, St. Edward beat Willows Academy 2-1 Friday to win the sectional title, the Green Wave's second sectional crown in the last three years.

  • St. Edward winning pitcher Jacob Koehring greets teammates as they come off the field after defeating Aurora Christian 3-2 Thursday in the 2A regional game in Elgin.

Homers put St. Edward in regional final May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The wind didn’t blow at gale force Thursday afternoon in Elgin. Perhaps 10-15 mph sustained. But the warm, southerly wind blew straight up the hill upon which Westminster Christian’s tony baseball diamond sits and straight out to left field, thereby creating a lifting effect that turned any flyball hit in that direction from ordinary to extraordinary. St. Edward hit 2 such flies: Jack Tierney’s first-inning, 2-run home run and Tighe Koehring’s solo shot to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. Koehring’s home run gave No. 2 St. Edward a 3-2 lead it never relinquished in a Class 2A regional semifinal victory over No. 3 Aurora Christian.
