Seniors at Jacobs, Hampshire and Dundee-Crown high schools will have the opportunity to take a new math class next year with a textbook designed especially for them. The course was developed by the Alliance for College Readiness which includes Elgin Community College and all of its feeder high school districts — Elgin Area School District U-46, St. Charles Community Unit District 303, Burlington-based Central Unit District 301, and Carpentersville-based Community Unit District 300, the only district to offer the course next year.

This awards dinner provides an opportunity to honor outstanding members of the education profession in Kane County and promote the awareness of the quality education being provided in our schools. Special recognition is also given to those retiring from education this school year.

Seven years after Illinois lawmakers passed a law intended to curtail big pension-boosting pay hikes for retiring educators, some local school districts still are paying hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in penalties to the state for giving such raises. Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 paid nearly half a million dollars in penalties to the state in the 2011-2012 school year.

A friendly rivalry between St. Charles North and South Elgin High Schools helped welcome a new Jersey Mike's sandwich shop to South Elgin this month. Jersey Mike's employees handed out 8,000 coupons throughout the area for a free sub with a $1 donation. When customers brought the coupon to the counter, they could decide whether the $1 donation would go to the boosters club of either school.

The organizers behind a proposed online charter school Friday released a 1,018-page answer to the questions posed by members of the 18 school districts that have to vote on the request. Several of the boards, including Geneva and Kaneland, are due to vote on the proposal as soon as Monday.

A St. Charles couple has sued School District 303, arguing their 18-year-old son with autism was mistreated by officials and teachers at St. Charles North High School after his parents pushed for his inclusion in advanced classes during the 2011-2102 school year. Sandra and Bogdan Stanek seek $900,000 in damages for emotional distress and for a judge to hear their case after a hearing officer denied a chance for them to air their grievances.

Mental health of students as it relates to school safety is the focus of the new St. Charles Unit District 303 Summit series. During the next couple months, the district will explore ways to better recognize the behaviors typically found in students who become school shooters and what to do about it.

New ECC program gets students ready for college Feb 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Sean Robinson, an Elgin resident and junior at Burlington Central High School, is one of about 50 high school students participating in Elgin Community College's latest college readiness initiative. Transitions Academy brings together an ethnically diverse group of students across the four high school districts within ECC's boundaries. “It's a good opportunity for me to be successful in life,” one student said.
