    It appears St. Charles officials are on the verge of mending ties with the First Street Development team they cast aside in April. A new vision involves inking a deal with ALE Solutions to be the main tenant in building with first floor retail and three floors of office. The deal keeps ALE's headquarters in St. Charles and has Mayor Ray Rogina optimistic. "I’m pretty confident that (the developers) will be able to rent those retail spaces pretty easily."

He also has been Santa with a group of Haines Middle School students as his gift-bearing assistants. Though retired, his annual trips to Mooseheart continue, and on Dec. 19, he donned the red suit and white beard and delivered gifts to Mooseheart’s elementary-aged children for the 11th year.

    Two St. Charles East High School students successfully shut down District 303's network for the better part of a month in an ongoing denial-of-service attack. They were expelled for the rest of the year, but it cost the district about $9,000. “It clearly made life very difficult for our teaching staff,” Superintendent Don Schlomann said. “I think, clearly, that had a great deal of impact on our classrooms. And that was the most concerning part of this for me.”

    A local judge will take a third shot at determining the future of the Davis/Richmond grade level centers in St. Charles Unit District 303 after an appellate court remanded the case this week. This time, the appellate court wants the judge to consider a remedy for the lawsuit while factoring in the 2014 waiver Illinois received for the No Child Left Behind requirements. However, a dissenting opinion from the appellate court said the only proper remedy is dismantling the grade level centers.

School board members said this week they want a better feel for what the community wants before committing that kind of cash to new construction. “If we don’t know what we’re doing, we shouldn’t spend a couple million dollars,” said board member Ed McNally.

    The family of a St. Charles elementary school student has settled its lawsuit against St. Charles Unit District 303, in which they alleged the boy’s right arm was broken because school officials failed to protect him from a bully. The suit was settled and dismissed this summer, according to court records, after the district’s insurance carrier paid $15,000 to cover the 8-year-old boy’s medical expenses.
