Elgin police and sheriff's deputies investigating a complaint about guns being fired at 1:52 a.m. Sunday in the 11N300 block of Russell Road, found firecracker remnants, and more than 150 spent shotgun shells, rifle casings and .45-caliber bullet casings, as well as an unattended fire in a fire pit on the property.

Kevin S. Walton, 42, of St. Charles, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and transportation of open alcohol after authorities were called at 6:24 p.m. Saturday to the 35W500 block of Elder Avenue near St. Charles, according to a sheriff's report. Officers said they found Walton in his parked car, sleeping behind the wheel. Walton could not perform field sobriety tests, and deputies found two beer cans in his car, one of them open, the report said.

An engagement ring and wedding ring set was reported stolen at 3:23 p.m. Tuesday in the 500 block of South Harrison Street, Batavia, police said. The owner told police the rings were shipped to a buyer, but never received the payment expected via PayPal.

Erik D. Turner, 20, of Romeoville, was arrested and charged with possession of alcohol by a minor at 11:02 p.m. Saturday after he yelled at deputies at North Rosedale and Illinois avenues near Aurora, according to a sheriff’s report.

St. Charles assessor hopeful sues to get back on ballot Jan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
A man who was booted off the April 2013 ballot for St. Charles Township Assessor has sued to be reinstated, arguing that he would have been a township resident for over a year when the election was held. Gary Fritz was kicked off the ballot after an electoral board ruled that he was ineligible because he signed his statement of candidacy on Dec. 21, 2012, and courts have ruled that candidates must be a resident for a year when the statement is filed. Both sides are due in court Feb. 6.

Michael Wemken, 22, of Elgin, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana at 1:30 p.m. Sunday after someone who lives in the home called authorities to report he had drugs, according to a sheriff's report.
