    Emily Czajkowski, of St. Charles, learned Sunday that a possum’s fur is soft. The 11-year-old got the chance to see and touch the possum, a goose and a turtle with her family during the second of three Discovery Days weekends at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center in St. Charles.

The Halloween fan, who worked as a teenager at Hades Haunted House in Villa Park, estimated he spent about $75 this year decorating his townhouse. That's more than the expected national average for Halloween decor.

    For the first time since 1986, the Chicago area will host the Gay Softball World Series Aug. 29-Sept. 4. Games will be played in Schaumburg, St. Charles and Elmhurst. The series is expected to draw 4,000 athletes and fans to the Chicago area.
