    The Schaumburg Park District’s annual triathlon and duathlon will begin at at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, July 13, at Meinecke Recreation Center, 220 E. Weathersfield Way in Schaumburg. The triathlon consists of a 400-meter swim, 12.8-mile bike ride and 5K run. The duathlon consists of a 12.8-mile bike ride sandwiched between two 5K runs.

    Highly physical, probably defensive and anxiety-ridden for sure. Not exactly the kind of happy football that fans have enjoyed so far at the World Cup, but it's the likely scenario for Tuesday's second-round clash between Belgium and the United States. The stakes certainly are high enough. Belgium has not reached the quarterfinals since 1986 and the U.S. team has already exceeded expectations by emerging from a tough opening group and wants to ride that momentum.

    Winfield’s Kevin Streelman remains one of golf’s most promising up-and-coming players, but he’s not going into this week’s U.S. Open with any momentum. Chicago’s only homegrown PGA Tour player missed the cut in his last three tournaments. “It’s been a strange year golf-wise,” Streelman told golf columnist Len Ziehm, “but it’s been a wonderful year off the course thanks to Sophia (his daughter). The former Duke golfer talks with Ziehm about his family and the U.S. Open, which begins Thursday on the famed No. 2 course at Pinehurst, N.C.

  • College stars coming out for John Deere Classic Jun 4, 2014 10:11 PM
    Illinois’ only PGA Tour event of 2014 has thrived by appealing to young players, and director Clair Peterson saw no reason to change that approach when he announced his sponsor exemptions for the John Deere Classic this week. Peterson invited four of the best college stars to battle the PGA Tour players in the 44th staging of the $4.7 million tournament, which runs July 7-13 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, IL, near the Quad Cities.   • Conway Farms to host 2015 BMW Championship May 29, 2014 4:50 PM
    After earning the coveted “Tournament of the Year” Award in 2013 from the PGA Tour, Conway Farms Golf Club in Lake Forest was rewarded Thursday when it was named as host of the 2015 BMW Championship. The 2013 BMW Championship, which raised more than $2.3 million for the Evans Scholars Foundation, attracted more than 130,000 spectators. Lake County officials also credit it with an economic impact of more than $30 million.
