  • Riordan’s shot fires Bartlett past South Elgin Sep 9, 2014 11:12 PM
Tim Riordan’s biggest weakness became Bartlett’s strongest asset Tuesday night against rival South Elgin, and its timing was simply impeccable. When forward AJ Santori lofted a throw from the right of the box to a charging Riordan up the middle, all the junior midfielder could do was connect with his weaker foot, his right. Who knows what would have happened if he struck with his stronger left, but Riordan’s shot from 20 yards out with his bad foot sailed high into the net with 1:15 left in the match for the game-winner in the Hawks’ 2-1 Upstate Eight Valley win at Millennium Field in Streamwood.

  • Practice pays for South Elgin Sep 9, 2014 9:27 PM
Of all the places for South Elgin’s girls volleyball team to right the ship, West Aurora was a fitting location. The Storm had just played a tournament over the weekend there that didn’t go so well. After a rigorous — and apparently quite effective — practice on Monday, South Elgin returned to West Aurora Tuesday for an Upstate Eight Conference Valley matchup. The Storm dominated both sets, using strong serving, solid play from their middles while capitalizing on plenty of West Aurora mistakes for a 25-15, 25-13 victory.

The students produced a seven-minute film, “All About M.E.,” about Matthew Erickson, a 2-year-old boy who was born with brain cancer. “(The film) was a huge deal and it was really cool, but we didn’t expect anything out of this project when we did it,” Cosette Teschke said.

  • Aggressive St. Edward downs South Elgin Sep 3, 2014 11:30 PM
The South Elgin girls volleyball team has an array of talent along its front row, but St. Edward made it difficult for the Storm to pass the ball to those hitters in Wednesday’s nonconference sweep in Elgin. Fueled by a combination of aggressive serving by Samantha Boydston and efficient hitting from players like 6-foot-3 senior outside hitter Cece Rapp (7 kills), talented sophomore Dominique Washington (7 kills) and junior hitter Megan Barth (4 kills), the Green Wave snapped a 9-9 tie in Game 2 to complete a 21-19, 21-13 victory.
