  • Hot-shooting Conant downs South Elgin Feb 19, 2015 11:10 PM
Conant’s 56.7 percent shooting night (17-for-30) from the field was impressive as the Class 4A Geneva sectional’s top seed won the Addison Trail girls basketball regional title on Thursday night, the Cougars’ first since 2008. Maybe more impressive was the defensive effort from the Cougars (23-5) that held No. 8 South Elgin to an 8-for-39 (20.5 percent) night from the field in a 50-32 victory. Conant will play the winner of Friday’s St. Charles North regional title game between No. 4 St. Charles East (20-7) and the fifth-seeded host (19-8) in the Monday semifinal at Geneva.

Obsessed? Let’s just say the South Elgin girls basketball players had been looking forward to Thursday’s rematch with rival Bartlett ever since the Hawks pasted them 56-28 on Jan. 27. That lopsided loss, coupled with the news that leading scorer Bridgette Williams was lost for the season due to knee surgery, forced the Storm to narrow their focus two weeks ago. Coach Dan Mandernack figured his team had two choices.

  • Dinkheller’s officiating career honored with IBCA Hall induction Feb 11, 2015 9:45 PM
Elgin resident Jim Dinkheller had modest goals when he enrolled in a basketball officiating class taught by late Elgin legend Pete Kovacs in 1980. Talked into the class by Kovacs, who taught the Elgin Community College-affiliated course at Elgin’s Kimball Middle School, Dinkheller figured he could officiate to stay in shape through the winter months and earn a little cash to boot. Little did the Larkin graduate know it would lead to a 34-year officiating career and his eventual induction to the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. The longtime referee learned last month he is one of eight officials slated for induction at this year’s IBCA banquet in May, a level of recognition he never expected.
