  • Neuqua Valley holds off South Elgin Sep 16, 2014 9:35 PM
Momentum is a funny thing and sometimes it can be gained even through a loss. That’s what happened with the Neuqua Valley girls volleyball team at South Elgin Tuesday night. The Wildcats lost Game 1 of the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division match but the momentum they gained with a big comeback that fell just short carried into the rest of the night. They held off the scrappy Storm 24-26, 25-13, 25-22 to remain undefeated in the division.

West Aurora needed only 5 plays to score its first touchdown in an Upstate Eight Conference football in 17 years Friday night. But not much else went according to plan for the Blackhawks against South Elgin in the schools’ Valley Division game in Aurora. • Brooks has been pleasant surprise for Dundee-Crown Sep 11, 2014 10:43 AM
Were one to hazard a guess before the season started as to Dundee-Crown’s most consistent tailback through 2 games, it’s unlikely the name Brandon Brooks would have leapt off the tongue. Nevertheless, Brooks, also a starting linebacker, has been a steadying influence in the offensive backfield during D-C’s 2-0 start. The senior helped salt away a 36-22 win at Elgin in the season opener with a 19-yard touchdown in the second half, part of an 85-yard, 13-carry performance.

  • Riordan’s shot fires Bartlett past South Elgin Sep 9, 2014 11:12 PM
Tim Riordan’s biggest weakness became Bartlett’s strongest asset Tuesday night against rival South Elgin, and its timing was simply impeccable. When forward AJ Santori lofted a throw from the right of the box to a charging Riordan up the middle, all the junior midfielder could do was connect with his weaker foot, his right. Who knows what would have happened if he struck with his stronger left, but Riordan’s shot from 20 yards out with his bad foot sailed high into the net with 1:15 left in the match for the game-winner in the Hawks’ 2-1 Upstate Eight Valley win at Millennium Field in Streamwood.

  • Practice pays for South Elgin Sep 9, 2014 9:27 PM
Of all the places for South Elgin’s girls volleyball team to right the ship, West Aurora was a fitting location. The Storm had just played a tournament over the weekend there that didn’t go so well. After a rigorous — and apparently quite effective — practice on Monday, South Elgin returned to West Aurora Tuesday for an Upstate Eight Conference Valley matchup. The Storm dominated both sets, using strong serving, solid play from their middles while capitalizing on plenty of West Aurora mistakes for a 25-15, 25-13 victory.
