South Elgin’s softball team battled back from an 8-3 deficit to beat Streamwood 9-8 Monday morning in the Class 4A St. Charles East regional play-in game when Taylor Rees’ sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning scored Brittany Koss with the winning run.

    It was déjà vu all over again at the Jacobs boys tennis sectional on Saturday. The Golden Eagles won their second straight sectional team title while South Elgin senior Andre Norasith repeated as the individual champion. Both won at the Elgin sectional a year ago.

    Schaumburg won its first boys track and field sectional title since 1983 by prevailing when pushed. Take the 800-meter relay, for instance. The Saxons entered Friday’s Class 3A Bartlett sectional held at Memorial Field in Elgin as the clear favorite with the best seed time, but a bad handoff tested their composure and their coach’s nerves.

    Waubonsie Valley 1, South Elgin 0: The Storm (17-13, 10-9) saw their six-game winning streak come to an end in this Upstate Eight Valley contest. Sam Helton was 3-for-3 for South Elgin and Taylor Rees had a double, Paige Allen suffered the loss in the circle, allowing just 6 hits.

    At the beginning of the season, one of the first goals set by the South Elgin girls soccer team was to win the program’s first regional title, and the Storm accomplished that on their home field. Despite another strong showing by Elgin freshman keeper Hannah Erickson (10 saves), the top-seeded Storm (13-5-2) earned a 3-0 win over the No. 2 Maroons (9-10) in Friday’s Class 3A South Elgin regional championship game. South Elgin advances to Tuesday’s Rockford Auburn Sectional and will play Harlem at 6 p.m.

    Grayslake North 2, Hampshire 0: The Whip-Purs were unable to secure the Fox Valley Conference Fox Division title outright as they fell to Grayslake North, leaving them in a first-place tie with Grayslake Central. Sara Finn, Aly Snider and Becca Hurst had the only hits in the loss for Hampshire (19-12, 10-2). Haley Widmayer (17-10) didn’t allow an earned run, gave up just 4 hits and had 8 strikeouts with 3 walks in suffering the loss.

    The boys volleyball banner on the wall at South Elgin is blank: no conference or state series titles. But the Storm took a big step toward filling it up, clinching at least a share of the Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division title by defeating Metea Valley, 25-18, 25-19 Tuesday in South Elgin.

    The first step was an easy one Tuesday for the South Elgin girls soccer team. Four players scored a pair of goals and six players scored in total as the Storm beat Larkin, 10-0, in the Class 3A South Elgin regional semifinals. The top-seeded Storm (12-5-2) will play either No. 2 seed Elgin or No. 3 Streamwood at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the regional championship. Elgin and Streamwood play Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

    Ryan Sargent tossed a 5-hitter with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts, and Tim Hubner, Matt Kozlak and Brenden Heiss each drove in runs as the Jacobs baseball team defeated Cary-Grove 3-1 on Monday. The victory kept Jacobs (20-11, 13-4), which has never won a title in the Fox Valley Conference, tied for first place in the Valley Division with Huntley with 2 games remaining.

    Huntley, Cary-Grove split: After taking a 3-1 loss to start the day thanks to a rain-shortened makeup, the Red Raiders (17-14, 7-5) rebounded and won 6-2 to close out the day in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division action.

    The South Elgin softball team fell behind by 5 runs with Bartlett threatening to increase the lead in the second inning Monday. The Storm got out off a bases-loaded, one-out jam and rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat the Hawks, 9-7, in Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division play in South Elgin.

    South Elgin’s push for a title in the Upstate Eight Conference’s Valley Division was dealt a blow Saturday with a pair of 1-run losses at West Chicago. The Storm entered the doubleheader trailing division-leading Waubonsie Valley by a game in the loss column, but they dropped the opener 6-5 when the Wildcats rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Austin Sayre. Nick Menken had the only multihit game for the Storm.

    New location, same teams. The Class 4A baseball sectional held last season at Huntley shifts to McHenry this year, but little else has changed. Three of the four regionals within the sectional complex contain the same five teams and the fourth has only one lineup alteration, according to pairings released this week.

     
  • Neuqua Valley’s Grayson Jenkins leads Batavia’s David Morrison and teammate Daniel Weiss in the 3,200 meter run Thursday at the Upstate Eight Conference boys track meet at Memorial Field at Elgin High School. Jenkins won while Morrison placed second and Weiss ended in fourth place.

    Wins, PRs come for Neuqua ValleyMay 15, 2014 12:00 AM
    Neuqua Valley boys track coach Mike Kennedy provided his athletes a simple message for Thursday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Elgin’s Memorial Stadium. “He told us, every race you go into, either you win or you PR, because you win either way,” said Wildcats junior Zac Espinosa. He achieved both in the 400-meter run, edging teammate Nick Rafacz while setting a personal record at 49.33 seconds. Neuqua Valley did win either way, both in the Valley Division and among all 14 UEC teams. In the first year of a post-Lake Park UEC, the Wildcats earned a total of 131 points, a fair cushion over Waubonsie Valley’s 109 and River Division winner Batavia’s 103.
