The turkey having settled, it’s time to move to step two of the girls basketball season, which kicks off in earnest this week as conference play around the Fox Valley area begins. But on Saturday, conference wars take a break for the second annual Mac Irvin Diabetes Classic at Larkin. Three top-notch boys games will be played and one very marquee girls game, at 3:15 p.m., will pit defending Class 3A state champion Montini against defending Class 4A state champion Whitney Young of Chicago. Young is coached by 1992 Larkin graduate Corry (Carter) Irvin, the brother of Larkin boys basketball coach Deryn Carter.

  • Elk Grove thwarts South Elgin’s plan Nov 25, 2014 10:45 PM
South Elgin boys basketball coach Matt Petersen had a good defensive scheme for controlling Elk Grove’s offense. “We knew that if we put pressure on them right from the start we could force the turnovers and get some scores,” said Petersen. “But when the game started, it didn’t happen. We made Elk Grove look real comfortable at the start of the game.” The Grenadiers hit six 3-point baskets in the first quarter on the way to finishing with 12. Add to that two old-fashioned 3-point plays and Elk Grove had a 25-17 lead after one quarter. Dan Hadler scored 9 of his 20 points to go along with 7 rebounds in the Grenadiers’ 82-71 win over the Storm at the 29th annual Chuck Mitchell Tournament held at Fenton High School. Elk Grove improved to 2-0 while South Elgin, which played inspired basketball in spots, fell to 1-1.

  • South Elgin overcomes Jacobs Nov 22, 2014 8:55 PM
Delaney Kelleher made sure to remind teammate Bridgette Williams about how all South Elgin girls basketball players are supposed to conclude postgame interviews this season. “Roll Storm,” Kelleher said to Williams. “Roll Storm,” Williams repeated. The Storm did not roll over and give in to early foul trouble or other adverse circumstances late Saturday afternoon and improved to 2-1 with a 51-43 victory over Jacobs in the third round of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament in Carpentersville.

  • A record opening night for Huntley’s Andrews Nov 19, 2014 10:44 PM
Ali Andrews did not appear to be on her way to making history by missing her first 4 shots and not scoring for the first 6½ minutes of the Huntley girls basketball season opener Wednesday night. But the early returns for the 6-foot-2 junior and Illinois recruit were deceiving as Huntley hosted the first-round game of the Dundee-Crown Thanksgiving Tournament against South Elgin. Andrews scored a school-record 34 points as the Red Raiders finally pulled away in the final three-plus minutes to a 58-45 victory.

  • South Elgin High School presents ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ Nov 11, 2014 10:23 AM
“It’s a Wonderful Life” is so strong and so deeply embedded in our consciousness that it can be taken off the big screen and put on the small stage as a radio play and lose none of its power and luminosity. South Elgin High School’s production, which runs Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 13-15, proves the point.

  • Fox Valley runners poised to make an impact at state Nov 5, 2014 6:43 PM
For Streamwood senior girls’ cross-country standout Gabby Juarez, it was time to play with the big dogs. Juarez adjusted her running strategy a bit this year and the results have been overwhelmingly positive. Juarez recently won a Class 3A sectional individual title and will try to add some more hardware to her collection at Saturday’s state finals race in Peoria at Detweiller Park.

  • Bartlett-Streamwood’s Filipek UEC 50, 100 champ Nov 1, 2014 9:48 PM
The 50-yard freestyle is the most unforgiving race in a swim meet. The race is often broken down as “a start, a flip turn and a finish.” But mess up on any of those three, or during the two lengths of the pool that comprise the race, and someone else wins. Bartlett-Streamwood’s Kayla Filipek was the best in the 50 freestyle at Saturday’s Upstate Eight Conference meet at Waubonsie Valley. The sophomore covered the distance in 24.24, six-tenths faster than second-placed Samantha Sauer from St. Charles North.
