  • South Elgin, St. Charles North battle to draw Aug 26, 2014 9:24 PM
Maybe it’s too early to call the South Elgin boys soccer squad a team of destiny, but if you could say anything about the Storm’s debut Tuesday is that it at least knows how to channel its inner-Cristiano Ronaldo in the waning seconds. In an ending slightly similar to how the USA Men’s soccer team squandered the lead in the closing seconds of its World Cup match against Portugal this summer, St. Charles North watched its victory slip away when a throw-in by Storm forward Jose Gomez on the left sideline ricocheted off Juan Carlos Lujan’s shoulder in the box controversially with just 26 seconds to end an Upstate Eight crossover in a 1-1 tie.

  • South Elgin has some firepower Aug 27, 2014 2:16 PM
Considering South Elgin coach Pat Pistorio and his staff had little time to prepare the team after being hired in July of 2013, it’s remarkable how close the Storm came to making the playoffs last season. The final record was 3-6, including one-sided losses to playoff qualifiers Benet and Waubonsie Valley, but South Elgin was competitive in most games until the end. Of its 6 losses, 4 came by a total of 19 points.

It looks like life will go on just fine in the post-Matt Weber era for the Burlington Central boys’ golf team. In their first tournament since the departure of the Fox Valley area’s top golfer from a year ago, the Rockets finished in second place in the Larkin Invitational at The Golf Club of Illinois in Algonquin on Wednesday. Central recorded a team score of 320 just 2 strokes behind the tournament winner DeKalb.

  • South Elgin edges Prairie Ridge for third place Jun 16, 2014 10:15 PM
The best baseball season in South Elgin’s eight-year history concluded with a win Saturday. Barely. Prairie Ridge rallied for 2 runs in the top of the sixth inning and scored 2 more in the seventh before Storm junior reliever Austin Sayre induced a one-hopper back to the mound with the bases loaded to secure a 6-5 victory in the Class 4A third-place game Silver Cross Field.

  • Baseball’s Final Four? Anything can happen Jun 12, 2014 11:08 PM
Playoff baseball in the Land of Lincoln remains the least predictable of all IHSA tournaments due to the unforgiving nature of its single-elimination format. A couple of traditional state powers always seem to reach the Final Four in Joliet, but so do a couple of surprise teams that coalesce at the right time, this year being no exception.

  • South Elgin rallies, heads to state Jun 10, 2014 10:18 AM
Who was worried? The South Elgin baseball players will tell you they weren't. But as they were saying that they were also still in shock, as was just about everyone who had just witnessed the Storm's improbable comeback. Down 3 runs going into the bottom of the sixth inning, their senior ace knocked out of the game in the top of the inning, the Storm did what they do best — “Storm” back. South Elgin scored 4 runs in the bottom of the sixth then rode the right arm of senior reliever Tyler Brown in the top of the seventh to come away with a dramatic and thrilling 7-6 win over Evanston Monday night in the Class 4A supersectional at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg.

  • Adult court sought for 3 teens in Elgin beating Jun 9, 2014 5:05 PM
Kane County prosecutors requested Monday that three Elgin teens accused of beating and robbing an 87-year-old man Saturday, be prosecuted as adults. Judge Thomas Mueller did not rule on that issue Monday, but he did deny a request to let them out of the county youth jail, noting the seriousness of the crime. “Quite honestly, they don’t get more serious this, except for murder,” Mueller said.

  • From the darkness, South Elgin emerges a winner Jun 10, 2014 6:57 AM
They say it’s always darkest before the dawn. Maybe so, but it can get quite dark right before a once-in-a-lifetime Storm hits. For the South Elgin baseball team, the top of the sixth inning in Monday’s Class 4A Schaumburg Boomers supersectional against Evanston was darker than watching a lunar eclipse on an overcast night from a windowless room.

  • South Elgin upsets Batavia to win 1st sectional Jun 7, 2014 8:51 PM
Facing a pitcher who no-hit them earlier in the year — not to mention a No. 1 seed riding a 24-game winning streak — might seem like a daunting task to most teams. Most teams maybe, but not South Elgin. It’s going to take a lot more than that to phase the Storm, especially the way they are rolling through the postseason.

  • South Elgin’s roll continues Jun 6, 2014 7:43 AM
South Elgin is making playoff baseball look easy. The Storm scored 7 runs in the first two innings against No. 3 St. Charles North and elite right-hander Ryan Nutof limited the North Stars to an unearned run on 3 hits and struck out 9 in a complete-game victory in a Class 4A Schaumburg sectional semifinal Thursday.
