  • Productive day for Glenbard N. at Maine EastFeb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Heading to Champaign next weekend? Your probabilities of running into a few young men with bleached blonde hair are looking strong. And when you do, you will have found Glenbard North's 7 state-qualified wrestlers, all hoping for individual state titles and traditionally wearing the hairdos. Success for the Panthers came easy at the Class 3A Maine East sectional Saturday afternoon as Jon Marmolego (120 pounds), Jered Cortez (126) and Brian Murphy (152) all grabbed first-place wins in their respective weight classes, while Jimique Davis at 160 took second place, Patrick Augstyn (106) and Johnny Gosinski (132) placed third and Colton Wegner (170) sneaked into Champaign in fourth place. “We brought 10 guys here, seven got out and I can remember when we'd be happy if we got one guy out,” said Panthers' coach Mark Hahn. “To get seven guys out that's pretty good. We had five in the finals, pretty good tournament, all the way around.”

Huntley closing on on FVC Valley 3-peat Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
The Huntley boys basketball team is on the verge of completing a Fox Valley Conference three-peat. The Red Raiders (15-6, 9-0) can wrap up their third straight FVC Valley Division title tonight with a win against second-place Dundee-Crown (16-5, 7-2) in Carpentersville. Huntley defeated the Chargers 45-38 on Jan. 19. “This is a big week for us in terms of our goals and where we stand going into the playoffs,” senior forward Amanze Egekeze said after Wednesday’s victory at Crystal Lake South. “We know we’ve got to go on the road, play at a high level, execute and get better with each game.”

    Wentling’s 3s lift South Elgin past Batavia Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Through 3 quarters, South Elgin’s girls basketball team struggled to do much of anything offensively and trailed Batavia, 40-29. Then the Storm (16-10) finally found a hot hand in Nell Wentling. The 5-7 senior guard hit 3 fourth-quarter 3-point baskets to help force overtime and added her career-best eighth 3-pointer of the game — and 50th of the season — during the extra session as South Elgin rallied to defeat Batavia 61-56 in Thursday night’s Upstate Eight Conference crossover fourth-place game in South Elgin.

  • South Elgin’s seniors have some fun Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Senior nights are supposed to be fun. The South Elgin girls basketball team certainly enjoyed Saturday afternoon. The Storm held East Aurora to 7 first-half points, including scoreless in the second quarter, led by 30 at halftime and cruised to a 55-34 Upstate Eight Valley Division victory in South Elgin. “That was a fun game to play. We were all kind of excited,” said South Elgin senior Nell Wentling, who led the Storm with 13 points. “Getting to celebrate each other is cool and I think it brought a lot of energy and a lot of motivation.”

Glenbard North snares 13th straight regional title Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Toughness matters in wrestling, which partly explains why host Glenbard North secured its 13th straight regional title Saturday and advanced 10 individuals to next week’s Class 3A sectional. Seven Panthers competed in championship matches Saturday afternoon. Six wrestled their way to individual titles, thereby lifting Glenbard North (222 points) to the team title ahead of Wheaton North (183.5) and St. Charles East (174.5). “I thought we wrestled pretty tough,” Glenbard North coach Mark Hahn said. “We wanted the whole team to contribute points and we needed everybody — even if they weren’t seeded as well — to score points and everybody did. We knew it would be really close with St. Charles (East) and Wheaton North. We knew it would be a battle and I thought we stepped up.”

    Elgin-Larkin, Jacobs vs. Dundee-Crown set to go Jan 31, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fox Valley area’s two fiercest boys basketball rivalries have produced the season’s two best games to date. Larkin has defeated crosstown rival Elgin twice this season, most recently a 60-51 victory in the Elgin Holiday Tournament title game. But it was the first meeting — Larkin’s 76-73 double-overtime victory on Dec 12 — that will go down as one of the best in the history of the 121-game series, which Elgin still leads 79-42. Not to be outdone, Jacobs and Dundee-Crown battled through two overtimes on Jan. 15 before the Golden Eagles prevailed 76-66. Host Jacobs tied that game at the regulation buzzer when senior Nick Ledinsky drained a step-back 3-pointer from the corner.

  • Larkin brushes aside South Elgin Jan 29, 2013 12:00 AM
Ask the Larkin boys basketball team what’s going on Friday night in Elgin, the Royals will tell you what’s up. They’re well aware of their matchup with crosstown rival Elgin at Chesbrough Field House. But think again if the Royals had the opposite approach for South Elgin, nor the idea of taking the Storm lightly. Even with a freshman-laden Storm team 10 games under 500, Larkin considers South Elgin a rival and the Royals wanted to deliver a clear message. Consider a 70-51 Upstate Eight crossover win in Elgin a message sent, as Kendale McCullum spearheaded a defensive attack and led the Royals with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals.

Burlington Central’s kiddie corps has exceeded expectations Jan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
It's been well chronicled that Burlington Central girls basketball coach Mark Smith knew he had some talent coming in when he took the Rockets' head coaching job. And Smith knows talent. His daughter, Kelsey, plays at DePaul and as a boys baskeball coach for several seasons at St. Charles North, as well as a former high school and college player himself, Smith knows good players when he sees them. But even Smith admits being surprised at how well his freshman-laden team has done this season. At 19-4 overall and having secured their first Big Northern East championship since 2006-07, the Rockets also cracked the Daily Herald Top 20 this week for the first time this season, and they're the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Class 3A regional that they will host. Central has not won a girls basketball regional since 1990 and has only three regional banners in program history.
