  • Heraty’s homer gets Grayslake Central going Jun 4, 2014 11:01 PM
Grayslake Central’s softball team seemed to searching for energy until Brandy Heraty walked to the plate in the fourth inning. With one crack of the bat, she woke her team up during Wednesday’s Class 3A sectional semifinal at Ridgewood. Her home run pulled the Rams even on the scoreboard against Lakes. She added a bases-loaded walk in a 10-run fifth, as second-seeded Grayslake Central went on to beat the third-seeded Eagles 12-4. The Rams (23-12) will take on No. 1 Wauconda (28-8) in the sectional final at 11 a.m. Saturday.

  • MacDonald, Dolezal put Barrington in sectional final Jun 4, 2014 9:58 PM
The postseason is all about making the most of your opportunities. Sophomore Rachel MacDonald and the Barrington softball team sure did that on Wednesday in Algonquin. In her first start and with just six varsity at-bats under her belt, MacDonald delivered the biggest hit of her young career, a two-out, two-run, first-pitch rocket shot double to the fence in left field in the top of the fourth inning that scored sophomore Kelly Katis and senior pinch-runner senior Jenna Privatsky with the only runs junior Keenan Dolezal would need as the Fillies beat Rockton Hononegah 2-0 in the semifinals of the Class 4A Jacobs sectional.

There were 5 triples. Also two inside-the-park homers by Libertyville’s leadoff hitter, Tayler Oberman. Two girls, Lake Zurich’s Maria Schroeder and Libertyville’s Madi Bembinski, each drove in 4 runs. Five pitchers took part in this sectional semifinal game at Stevenson. In the end, Lake Zurich used back-to-back triples from cousins Mallory and Carlee Parsons to put across 4 runs in the visitor’s seventh inning. • Montini even better the 3rd time Jun 3, 2014 10:55 PM
It’s usually difficult to beat a team three times in a season, but Montini is making softball look easy these days. The Broncos defeated Suburban Christian Conference rival St. Francis for a third time this season, winning 11-1 in five innings in Tuesday’s Class 3A Glenbard South sectional semifinal. The Broncos will meet either Lemont or Glenbard South in Saturday’s sectional final.

  • Maisto steps down at Burlington Central Jun 3, 2014 10:15 PM
Wade Maisto might coach softball again, but it won’t be as Burlington Central’s head varsity coach. Just hours before the Rockets lost 8-7 in eight innings to Sterling Tuesday in the Class 3A Marengo sectional semifinals, Maisto submitted his letter of resignation as the program’s head coach.

  • Sterling beats Burlington Central in 8 innings Jun 3, 2014 9:45 PM
Sterling’s softball team sure does know how to come from behind when it plays on Marengo’s field. The last time the Golden Warriors played at Marengo before Tuesday’s Class 3A sectional semifinal against Burlington Central was the 2013 sectional championship game, which they won over host Marengo in walk off fashion. Well, Sterling did it again on Tuesday. Sophomore Abri Hale’s double to the base of the fence with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Nadia Trujillo with the game-winning run as the Warriors defeated Central 8-7 to move on to Saturday’s sectional title game against the winner of Wednesday’s semifinal between Marengo and Belvidere.

  • Naperville Central moves into sectional final Jun 3, 2014 9:44 PM
The Bolingbrook softball team, seeded ninth in the Class 4A Oswego East sectional, shook that sectional up big-time Saturday with an upset of top-seeded and 30-win Benet. So fourth-seeded Naperville Central had another big challenge in front of it when the Redhawks and Raiders met Tuesday in the first sectional semifinal. But there were no surprises for Naperville Central (27-7), and a 3-run fifth inning helped the Redhawks prevail 6-1 and advance to the 11 a.m. Saturday final against the winner of Wednesday’s second semifinal between second-seeded Downers Grove South and third-seeded Downers Grove North.

The win lifted fifth-seeded Antioch (18-16) into Tuesday’s 4:30 p.m. sectional semifinal against No. 1 Wauconda (27-8) at Ridgewood, where Rocco spent three seasons. • Schroeder, Lake Zurich battle past Buffalo Grove May 31, 2014 5:19 PM
If Maria Schroeder’s soft liner had been hit 3 feet to the left, the Lake Zurich senior third baseman would have had her single. Alas, it was caught. So Schroeder had to settle for three-quarters of a cycle in this regional title battle with Buffalo Grove on Saturday morning. She led off the Lake Zurich first with a long double. She batted again in the second inning and slammed a triple to right center. And in her last at-bat of the day at Glenbrook South, she came to plate with runners on second and third. The Bison elected to pitch to her even with first base open. And Schroeder made BG pay when she smoked a liner over the left field wall. It was good for a 3-run homer. Schroeder’s hitting heroics backed up Olivia Schneider’s 3-hit pitching as Lake Zurich (26-4) stopped Buffalo Grove 4-0.
