eteran catcher Shannon Doepking will retire from National Pro Fastpitch after five seasons, the Chicago Bandits announced Monday. "This is an announcement we were not looking forward to make," Bandits general manager Aaron M. Moore said in a statement released to the media. "Doepking came in and managed not only Monica (Abbott), but the entire pitching staff so effectively.

Burlington Central sophomore pitcher Angie Morrow first went to a University of Wisconsin softball camp when she was in eighth grade, the same year Yvette Healy left Loyola University in Chicago to become the Badgers’ head coach. Morrow continued to attend Wisconsin camps and form a relationship with Healy and her staff and in the process, the 5-foot-10 righthander hatched a dream to one day play college softball at Goodman Diamond in Madison. This weekend, that dream became a reality when Morrow accepted a scholarship offer from Wisconsin.

The Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch league have re-signed catcher Kristen Butler for the 2013 season, team officials announced this week.“We are happy to have Kristen back with us,” Bandits general manager Aaron M. Moore said. “Kristen provides some much-needed pop from the right side of the plate for us and she also brings a nice veteran presence. We’re looking for her to at least duplicate what she did in 2012. If she does that, our lineup will continue to get stronger.”

Not too many Mid-Suburban League softball players are also varsity gymnasts in the conference. But Megan Hedstrom is one of those exceptions. And she is also an exceptional softball player. Six months after leading Palatine as a junior with a .407 batting average, 41 RBI and 5 home runs, Hedstrom signed a letter of intent November of 2012 to play NCAA Division I softball for the University of North Dakota.

All of 15 years old for another month, Carmel Catholic sophomore Jenny Behan cannot legally drive a car yet. “Well,” she said with a laugh, “I’m driving. But, yeah, I haven’t gotten my license yet. I can drive a car — but not by myself.” She needs no paper to drive base runners in. Two years from now, she’ll have documentation. That’s when Behan plans to sign a national letter of intent with James Madison University to play softball. Talk about a trip. She won’t graduate from high school for two-and-a-half years, but she’s already decided on her college destination.

Burlington Central junior catcher/infielder Bekah Harnish, one of the top hitters in the area last season, has verbally committed to play for the Huskies when she graduates high school. "I love what coach Sutcliffe is doing there," said Harnish of the new NIU coach, an assistant at Miami of Ohio the past seven years.

Jacobs softball coach Jeremy Bauer, a physical education teacher at the school, says it matters little which sport it is, Golden Eagles' junior Alyssa Lach wants one thing — to win. "It doesn't matter if it's floor hockey or what it is," Bauer said. "Her competititveness is where it starts. She wants to win." Lach, who burst onto the softball scene last spring in earning all-area honors, verbally committed over the weekend to accept a softball scholarship offer from Butler University in Indianapolis.

Lindsay Efflandt would like to someday be a screenwriter. For now, though, the Cary-Grove senior is content to be writing her own script to college. Yearning to be educated at an Ivy League school, Efflandt found that to not only be in her future, but she'll get to play softball in college as well. The three-time all-area sstandout and two-time honorary co-captain of the all-area team recently committed to Yale University.
