    Cathyann Smith, who piloted the Conant softball team to a Mid-Suburban League and regional championship this spring, is coaching another talented team this summer. Smith was selected by the America’s Team Sports and the American Council for International Studies (ACIS) to coach this summer’s 2014 America’s Team Fast Pitch Softball in Germany.

    Judson University softball coach Becky (Stenning) Pearl has announced that she has accepted the position of head softball coach at NCAA Division II Lewis University effective August 4. Pearl has coached at Judson for 10 seasons and is the program’s all-time winningest coach with 250 wins.

    The Chicago Bandits extended their winning streak to four straight with a 7-2 victory over the Akron Racers on Friday at the Ballpark at Rosemont. Michelle Gascoigne of the Bandits (12-8) shut down the Racers (10-12) with a complete game, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 7 strikeouts en route to her third win of the season.

    A onetime multi-sport standout at Palatine, Nicole Pauly has been named the Pirates' softball head coach. She succeeds Jeff Manz, who recently finished up a 12-year run with a record of 257-155-2.

     
  • Schroeder caps prep softball career with multiple honors Jul 3, 2014 10:01 AM
    Maria Schroeder capped her high school softball career the same way she did following her junior season. The Lake Zurich senior was named to the first team all-stater by the Illinois Coaches Softball Association for the second straight year and was also named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region North second team. Schroeder finished this spring with a .593 batting average and hit .481 for her career. She finished her career with 200 hits and is tied for tenth in Illinois high school history for career triples with 28.

    A longtime staple on the summer fastpitch softball circuit will have an international flavor this year as the Netherlands national team will take part in the 10th annual John Radtke Memorial Women’s Fastpitch Classic this weekend at the Elgin Sports Complex.

     
  • Palatine picks Pauly to run softball program Jun 30, 2014 11:47 AM
    Nicole Pauly, one of the top players in Palatine High School softball history, is the new head coach of the Pirates program, school officials announced Monday. A former professional softball player, Pauly served as an assistant at PHS this spring under head coach Jeff Manz. She also completed her first year at Palatine as a counselor. “Nicole is a standout athlete, and has been a great addition to our student services team,” said Palatine High School Principal Gary Steiger. “Athletically, she has left her mark on every program she’s been associated with, from her playing days at PHS, Northwestern, and professionally to her previous coaching experience. We’re very excited about the direction our softball program is headed and the mark Nicole will leave here.” Pauly has a master’s degree in school counseling from Loyola University Chicago, and a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern. As a four-year starter at Northwestern, Pauly had 53 home runs, 168 RBI, 149 runs scored and a .604 slugging percentage in 215 collegiate games. A Palatine native, Pauly was a four-year letter winner in both basketball and softball at Palatine High School. She holds Palatine’s single-season record with a .496 batting average and an overall career average of .460. She was the Daily Herald’s All-Area captain in 2006. On the basketball court, she became the career-leader in steals and is second in career points, and was a member of the All-Area basketball team for the Daily Herald. Pauly played professionally for both the Chicago Bandits and Akron Racers in the National Professional Fastpitch league. She earned All-NPF honors with Akron in 2012.

  • High schoolers play annual all-star softball game in Elgin Jun 17, 2014 9:44 AM
    Some of the suburbs’ best high school softball players got the chance to play in a different kind of all-star game Monday evening at Judson University in Elgin. Before the 11th annual Fehlman Memorial Senior All-Star Softball Game, John Radtke, event organizer and Daily Herald Fox Valley Prep sports editor, said although the name of the event has changed through the years, the purpose remains the same. “It’s threefold,” he said. “Play hard, play to win, and have fun.”

     
  • Gaylord, Beal earn MVP honors in Fehlman Memorial Jun 16, 2014 11:25 PM
    The 11th Annual Fehlman Memorial Senior All-Star Game was played Monday night at Judson University. The event honors the memory of Dave and Robbie Fehlman, whose daughter and sister Lissa is a former Daily Herall All-Area standout from St. Edward High School. Monday’s MVPs were Brooke Gaylord of Burlington Central and Andi Beal of St. Charles North. The teams were coached by Kelly Horan of St. Charles East and Stacey Stepek of Hampshire. Team Stepek won the game 5-4.

     
  • Palatine’s English authors a winning final chapter Jun 16, 2014 11:38 PM
    The scrapbook of a first-grade teacher at Virginia Lake Elementary School in Palatine received a final item on Monday night to complete Courtney’s English’s high school softball career. The Pirates senior belted a two-out, 2-1 pitch for a 3-run homer to right-center field in the top of the seventh inning to lift the West to a dramatic 8-7 victory over the East in the 21st annual Mid-Suburban League Senior All-Star Softball Game at Barrington’s Fields of Dreams.
