Minooka mauls St. Charles East in title gameJun 8, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Charles East knew it was facing a team capable of incredible raw power this weekend. The Saints just didn’t know it would be Saturday. A day after a stunning walk-off win over No. 1-ranked Barrington, St. Charles East simply ran into a Minooka buzzsaw. The Indians banged out a championship-game record 14 runs and 19 hits and slugged 3 homers. Rachel May’s walk-off 3-run shot in the sixth inning capped off a 14-3 Minooka run-rule win in the Class 4A final at Eastside Centre in East Peoria.

Glenbard South wins second straight titleJun 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Jane Trzaska's experience and unflappable nature in the clutch, and Alexis Silkwood's unflinching belief that she can get any batter out. Those two endearing qualities of a competitor merged to make Glenbard South history. Trzaska took a Silkwood two-strike pitch the other way for a two-out triple to score Payton Carli, delivering Glenbard South past Alton Marquette 1-0 in eight innings in a tense Class 3A final at Eastside Centre in East Peoria and bringing a back-to-back state softball championship back to Glen Ellyn.

Full speed ahead for Carmel’s Felicelli Jun 7, 2013 12:00 AM

A three-sport varsity athlete since her sophomore year, Felicelli is the Daily Herald’s Lake County female athlete of the year. She followed up her third season as a No. 1 doubles player for the tennis team by earning Daily Herald all-area and all-East Suburban Catholic Conference honors in both basketball and softball. She was a part of 20-win teams in the latter two sports.

York hits its first bump in state road Jun 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Isabella Jaeger fielded the slow roller, then met Minooka’s Marissa Burns in a fierce collision along the first-base line. York’s sophomore first baseman got up after several minutes, but had to leave her position with a bloody nose. It was, yes, a bumpy day for the Dukes. A surprising run to the state tournament hit a detour Friday, Minooka rallying for 4 runs in the sixth inning to beat York 6-3 in a Class 4A semifinal at Eastside Centre.

In the clutch, it’s Taylor again for Glenbard SouthJun 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Hannah Taylor is as cool, calm and even-keeled as a teen-aged kid comes. When you’re this clutch, what’s to worry about? The author of the game-winning hit in last year’s championship game, Taylor was in the middle of things again Friday. The Glenbard South senior singled in the go-ahead run, then crushed a two-run homer as the Raiders moved closer to a repeat title by beating Tinley Park 5-1 in Friday’s Class 3A state semifinal at Eastside Centre.

Fehlman Memorial has stood the test of time Jun 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Monday’s Tenth annual Fehlman Memorial Senior All-Star Softball Game has plenty of special meaning for St. Edward graduate Lissa Fehlman. Fehlman played in one of the first editions of the game as a Green Wave senior. Much more importantly, the game, which takes place at 6:30 p.m. at Judson University, honors her father and brother. Dave Fehlman, who passed away late in the summer of 2007, is a past president of the Fox Valley Renegades travel softball organization and a longtime area youth softball supporter. The Renegades were the original host of the All-Star event, staging games at East Dundee’s Jockey Field. His son, Robbie Fehlman, was tragically killed by a motorist just after the family moved to Colorado late last summer. Robbie was 13.

Barrington hopes to make history downstate Jun 6, 2013 12:00 AM
Since the IHSA softball state tournament began in 1976, teams from the Mid-Suburban League have won 14 games in the state finals. The majority of those belong to Barrington. The Fillies have won eight, and would love to add two more this weekend. That would make them the first IHSA girls team sport to win a state championship at Barrington High School. The 2007 and 2008 Class 4A state runners-up will try to win one more than those back-to-back banner seasons. The Fillies (35-1) will start that quest when they meet St. Charles East (31-5) in Friday’s 3 p.m. semifinal at the Eastside Center.
