  • St. Charles East rushes to the sidelines with their plaque after beating Conant during sectional final play Friday in Hoffman Estates.

Another big step for St. Charles EastMay 30, 2014 12:00 AM
The St. Charles East girls soccer team has been on a mission to return the program to the glory days of the past. On Friday, the Saints moved a step closer. Before St. Charles High School became St. Charles East with the opening of the North campus in 2001, state titles in girls soccer were commonplace. The old Saints won eight championships during the 80’s and 90’s. They haven’t really come close since — but times maybe changing. The fourth-seeded Saints captured their first sectional title since 2007 with a 1-0 win over host and second-seeded Conant. East advances to the Class 3A Lake Park supersectional next Tuesday to face Rockford Auburn sectional champ Huntley.

Barrington. There could be no doubt that this was who everyone figured would be in this much-anticipated contest. Colleen Zickert finally broke the resistance Barrington’s defense to bring the Bison (22-3-3) close at 44 minutes but the Fillies’ Jenna Szczesny had already put the shine of the silverware with two first-half strikes to give Barrington a hard-fought 2-1 victory. It was the sixth straight sectional crown for the Fillies (18-3-1), who will meet New Trier at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Hersey supersectional with a chance to return to the final four of the state tournament.

Will disappointed Donovan take it out on Fire?May 29, 2014 12:00 AM

St. Edward focused on Class 1A state championshipMay 29, 2014 12:00 AM
They’re about as cornball a bunch as you’ll ever find wearing high school uniforms, and their coach will be the first to tell you that. He will also be the first to tell you they don’t practice very well, although he may use words to describe those practices that can’t be printed in a family newspaper. But he will also be the first to tell you that when they hit the field, they are all business. And one can’t argue with the results, because the St. Edward girls soccer team is in the IHSA Class 1A Final Four this weekend at North Central College in Naperville.

Last year when St. Edward girls soccer coach Tim Brieger checked the clock with 16 minutes remaining and his Green Wave leading 1-0, knowing how the 2012 postseason went down in the late stages, he grudgingly watched Francis Parker score 3 unanswered goals and deny the Green Wave a state berth for a second-straight year. Tuesday night, at the same juncture against Chicago Latin in the same location, at the Class 1A Concordia University supersectional in River Forest, when Brieger checked the clock at the 16 minute mark, there was no doubt his Green Wave were going to seal the deal this time.
