    The Harper men’s soccer team will see a different face on the touchline when the Hawks open their season Friday against College of DuPage. The head-coaching void left by former coach Jason Diebold will be filled by Dan Klaus. That name should be familiar to Mid-Suburban League soccer fans, as Klaus has directed the girls soccer program at Elk Grove since 2002.

    Boys soccer Warren 1, Niles North 0: At Glenbrook South, Alex Fratila scored in the second half off an assist from Jacob Luka, as the Blue Devils won their season opener. R.J. Hill earned the shutout in goal. Schurz 2, Stevenson 1: At Glenbrook South, Dennis Katsman’s goal, assisted by Zach Zwirn, had the Patriots up 1-0 in the opening half of their season opener. Schurz tallied both of its goals in the second half. Wauconda 2, Woodstock 0: Alex Reyes and Erick Olejniczak scored for the Bulldogs in their season opener. Ratha Castronova and Gio Marquez had assists. Shane Purcell (5 saves) and Danny McMutt (6 saves) shared the shutout in goal. Libertyville 2, Evanston 1: The Wildcats won their season opener, as Cam Fragassi and Trey Touhey scored first-half goals. Liam O’Connell and Jeff Wagner had assists.

The names had changed, and so, obviously, had the stakes in Monday’s boys soccer contest. But as season openers go, it was a most worthy beginning as both clubs played an entertaining 80 minutes which ended in a 0-0 draw on the turf in Wheeling.

In an ending slightly similar to how the USA Men’s soccer team squandered the lead in the closing seconds of its World Cup match against Portugal this summer, St. Charles North watched its victory slip away when a throw-in by Storm forward Jose Gomez on the left sideline ricocheted off Juan Carlos Lujan’s shoulder in the box controversially with just 26 seconds to end an Upstate Eight crossover in a 1-1 tie.
