Maradona gives UAE football much-needed boost May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Bringing Diego Maradona to coach in Dubai was a calculated risk for the Al Wasl club. People can be jailed for public drinking or even making rude gestures in the United Arab Emirates, making somebody with Maradona's history of drug and alcohol abuse and knack for courting controversy an odd choice for a coach. Halfway through Maradona's two-year deal, the gamble appears to have paid off for Al Wasl.

St. Charles N. handles pressure, Schaumburg May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
No matter which of the five kicks in a penalty kick shootout a player is slated to take, there is bound to be pressure. Shootouts are pressure-packed situations by their very nature. But Lauren Koehl stepped up to take the fifth of St. Charles North's kicks on Friday night with a pressure unique to the shootout with Schaumburg: she could win the match for her team by converting her kick.

Barrington claims 4th straight sectional May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Aimee Pierce stood between freshmen Jenna Szczesny and Kelsey Muniez encouraging them in their postgame interviews. But this wasn't a typical situation for a sectional championship team. After all, Muniez had only played on the Barrington varsity team for a month and hadn't scored a goal. Szczesny has been on the Fillies' varsity squad, but it has been the playoffs where she has started to become a constant scoring threat. Each freshman scored goals in Barrington's 2-0 victory over Huntley in the Class 3A Rockford Boylan sectional, giving the Fillies a fourth-straight sectional crown.

A bend-but-don't-break philosophy served the St. Viator girls soccer team well Friday night in the Class 2A Lakes sectional final. The top-seeded Lions' offense struck early against No. 2 Lake Forest, and the St. Viator defense held on in the end for an exciting 1-0 victory and a berth to the Barrington supersectional next Tuesday. St. Viator (14-8-4) will face Belvidere sectional champion Freeport at 5 p.m., while the Scouts closed out their season with a 16-5-2 record.

Glenbrook South pays back BG May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
With the chance to avenge an early exit from last year's playoffs in an upset loss to Buffalo Grove, Glenbrook South seized the opportunity. The Titans (20-4-4) struck back with two first-half goals after the Bison had stunned the favored veteran Central Suburban League club with a 13th-minute goal from Colleen Zickert. Fifth-seeded Glenbrook South then held off the No. 2 seed the rest of the way to earn a 2-1 victory Friday night in Class 3A sectional championship play at Palatine. The Titans will meet New Trier in Tuesday's Niles North supersectional.

Schaumburg savors victory over Conant May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
The scene on the pitch at Schaumburg told the story. Saxons players were celebrating all around freshman Sarah Kozlowski, while Conant's players were staring in disbelief. After six long years, Schaumburg's wait was over. Kozlowski's goal in the 89th minute beat the Cougars 2-1 Wednesday night, sending the Saxons into their own sectional final Friday night against St. Charles North. The defeat ended a memorable run for the Conant seniors, who lifted two state trophies in their four years and were clearly one of the state's top programs.

Barrington has OT magic against Boylan May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
Barrington's Alex Avers knew exactly where Rockford Boylan goalkeeper Shelby Sonnefeldt was going to be. It just took her a little while to get a shot off. When Avers did get that shot it turned out to be a game-closer, as she drilled it past Sonnefeldt in the second overtime of the Boylan Class 3A sectional semifinal Tuesday. Avers took a pass from Jenna Szczesny in the first minute of the second overtime and put it in the back of the net to give the Fillies a 3-2 win. Barrington (18-5) will go for its fourth straight sectional title at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Huntley, which won its semifinal in a shootout over Jacobs.

Cronin, Glenbrook South handle Palatine May 22, 2012 12:00 AM

St. Viator likes the look of victory May 22, 2012 12:00 AM

Katelyn Hammarlund scored the game-winning goal in the 75th minute. The Lions (13-8-4) advance to the sectional championship and will play second-seeded Lake Forest (16-4-2) at 6 p.m. Friday.
