The Batavia girls soccer team checked off the most important task on its to-do list Tuesday. It beat Hoffman Estates 4-0 in the first semifinal of the Class 3A Lake Park regional in Roselle and will play another day. The Bulldogs (12-4-3), seeded third in the Hoffman Estates sectional, got some momentum for Friday's 6 p.m. regional final against sixth-seeded Lake Park with a very strong showng on offense in the second half where it tagged the 15th-seeded Hawks (2-14-2) for three goals.

South Elgin recovered after trailing by a goal to register a stunning 2-1 victory over No. 5 seed Elk Grove in Class 3A regional semifinal play in the second match Tuesday evening at Conant. Second-half goals from Andrea Walsh, the game-winner coming in sensational fashion in the 76th minute, helped send the No. 11 seeed Storm (8-8-2) through to the regional final this Friday against the host Cougars (11-4-5), who overwhelmed Streamwood 8-0 in the opener.

The Geneva girls soccer team kept its momentum going as the seventh-seeded Vikings took on No. 12 regional host Bartlett in the Class 3A semifinals on Tuesday night at Millennium Field. The Vikings scored 3 goals in the first 10 minutes and cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Hawks (8-15).

St. Viator, Vernon Hills to meet for 2A regional title May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Viator and Vernon Hills started out their girls soccer postseasons with victories in opening-round games of the Class 2A state tournament on Tuesday afternoon. Fourth-seeded St. Viator shut out No. 13 Amundsen 8-0 in the first semifinal, and No. 5 Vernon Hills picked up a forfeit win over No. 12 Mather in the other semifinal in Amundsen regional action at Chicago's Winnemac Stadium. St. Viator (10-7) next plays Vernon Hills (10-4-2) in the regional championship at 10 a.m. Saturday at Winnemac Stadium.

The postseason couldn't have started out any better for the Crystal Lake South girls soccer team. The Gators dominated possession and kept Dundee-Crown from getting any good scoring opportunity Tuesday as CL South defeated the Chargers, 5-0, in the semifinals of the Class 3A Crystal Lake South regional. "It's good motivation to help us get through," said Gators senior Mackenzie Taldone, who scored the final 2 goals. "We've definitely been put as underdogs during the conference so we're definitely going to push through regionals and show people who we actually are."

Improbable comeback for Burlington Central May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
With 20 minutes to go in the semifinal of the Class 2A Sycamore girls soccer regional semifinal Tuesday, few in the stands were thinking overtime. No one but the most ardent Burlington Central fans was planning a Rockets' victory celebration. Hampshire led 3-0 and was seemingly able to run out the clock. But by the end of overtime, it was indeed the Rockets who were celebrating. Alyssa Messina scored the tying goal with 1:11 left in regulation, then scored the eventual game-winner halfway through the first overtime as the Rockets completed the improbable comeback for a 4-3 victory.

The chances were there as Grayslake Central's girls soccer team pursued its third straight Fox Valley Fox Division girls soccer title. The Rams needed to get a victory in one their final two matches. It didn't happen, though, as Grayslake Central lost to visiting Crystal Lake Central 1-0 on Saturday morning in Grayslake.

Like a freight train with a full head of steam, once the St. Edward girls soccer team got its engine into gear during Saturday's Class 1A regional final at Westminster Christian, the Green Wave were hard to stop. Even a slick field that provided early trouble couldn't derail the top-seeded Green Wave, who won their third-straight regional title, easily beating No. 3 Westminster Christian 7-0 in Elgin Saturday afternoon. But unlike other years, the celebration was short-lived since the Wave's focus is on a much greater prize.

Fire lament missed chances in loss to Union May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fire outshot the Union 15-9 and had possession 58 percent of the game, but as has been the case too often this season, the Fire couldn't score. The Union did, winning 1-0 despite being without starting defenders Sheanon Williams and Jeff Parke.

One of the most successful regular seasons in area girls soccer came to a close Saturday when Rosary defeated St. Francis to win the Suburban Christian Conference title. Now all eyes move to the postseason. In the Class 3A tournament, St. Charles North, St. Charles East and Batavia grabbed the top three seeds in the Hoffman Estates sectional.
