Say no to Medicaid reform amendments May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
A Sleepy Hollow letter to the editor: Medicaid is a costly program and introducing 474 pages of legislation 10 days before the General Assembly's spring session ends is irresponsible. Oppose the legislation, especially House Committee Amendment No. 3 and call for well crafted reform that includes public hearings to solicit input from both program participants as well as taxpayers.

Jacobs, Kirker surprise Cary-Grove May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
It seemed appropriate Katie Kirker's finest moment would come in a regional championship game. Retiring the first 15 batters she faced, Kirker, who has been plagued by injuries her entire high school career, twirled a masterful 1-hit shutout as second-seeded Jacobs upset top-seeded Cary-Grove 1-0 in the Class 4A Huntley regional final Saturday. It is the Golden Eagles' third straight regional title.

Jacobs softball coach Jeremy Bauer rarely shows emotion on the field. It takes a special moment or performance for Bauer to really open up a little. West Dundee arts center taking shape May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
A downtown West Dundee building that once housed a grocery store and later a hardware store, is on the road to becoming a regional performing arts center. Rick Browne, a local architect and actor, has drawn up plans to convert the former Ziegler's Ace Hardware store into the Fox Performing Arts Center. But as part of an agreement with West Dundee, Browne has until Aug. 1 to raise $500,000 in seed money. It's a figure village leaders say would prove there's enough support to make Browne's vision a reality.

Self, Jacobs get past Huntley May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The Jacobs baseball team's 8-4 victory over Huntley Thursday was partly a matter of Self-help. No. 3 Huntley led 3-0 after half an inning, but No. 2 Jacobs showed no panic. The Golden Eagles chipped away with single runs in the first and second innings before erupting for a 6-run third to pull away for an 8-4 victory in a Class 4A Huntley baseball regional semifinal.

Fox Valley could be showered in medals this weekend May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
The medal stand at the boys state track and field meet at Eastern Illinois University could be littered with Fox Valley area athletes this weekend. Among the brightest hopes to win state titles in Class 3A are Elgin's 800-meter relay team and Cary-Grove senior thrower Josh Freeman. Elgin seniors Terrell Campbell, Devante King, Derek Moorman and Dennis Moore will attempt to win the first state track title for their school since Tony Adams won back-to-back 440-yard dash titles in 1978 and 1979, according to IHSA records. The foursome set the school record in the 800-meter relay at the St. Charles North sectional (1:27.83).

Lein, Jacobs blank Crystal Lake South May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
By her own admission, McKayla Lein was extremely nervous before pitching against Crystal Lake South in Wednesday's Class 4A Huntley regional softball semifinal game. Lein certainly didn't let nerves hinder her performance. The sophomore left-hander was simply outstanding in the pitchers circle, tossing a 5-hit shutout as second-seeded Jacobs knocked off third-seeded Crystal Lake South 4-0.

Crystal Lake S. makes quick work of Dundee-Crown May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Dundee-Crown baseball coach Tommy Parisi knew top-seeded Crystal Lake South had been a dominant force in every area all season long. But giving the Gators, who lead the Fox Valey area with a team batting average of .337, extra outs with their kind of offensive firepower, would hurt D-C real bad. The second inning of the Gators' 12-2 Class 4A Huntley regional semifinal win in five innings exemplified just that.
