S. Elgin woman seeks home for 9/11 memorial Sep 30, 2011 12:00 AM
Paula Eaton was home on Sept. 11, 2001 and able to turn on the television just minutes after the first plane hit the World Trade Center. For the rest of the day she watched the news reports and cried. A nagging need to do something plagued Eaton as she wrestled with her grief. The next day she finished a flag commemorating the attacks and now she is looking for somewhere to display it.

The plot of land that has been known for a decade as “the pile,” “the pit” and “ground zero” is opening to the public for the first time since that terrible morning in 2001, transformed into a memorial consisting of two serene reflecting pools ringed by the engraved names of the nearly 3,000 souls lost. A piece of the World Trade Center came to its final resting place in Mundelein Sunday during a memorial and dedication service for the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. “There isn’t anybody American that this didn’t touch,” said Joan Dennis of Mundelein, who didn’t know anyone killed in the attacks but came out as a way to honor those who lost their lives. “Its burned into all of our memories.”
