  • Stevenson HS students peform “Marvin’s Room” this week Sep 17, 2014 4:19 PM
    Stevenson High School’s Fine Arts Division will present the fall play, “Marvin’s Room,” Thursday through Saturday, September 18-20, in the Studio Theater (Room 2204) by the Sports Center entrance. Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with an additional performance at 2 p.m. Saturday.

    Everyone’s favorite upside-down fairy tale comes to Elgin in September when the Fox Valley Theatre Company presents “Shrek the Musical,” a song-and dance-filled stage adaptation of the award-winning animated film. Performances will be at the Blizzard Theatre at Elgin Community College.

    The Harper College Theatre Department will complete its staging of playwright Alfred Uhry’s “Atlanta Trilogy” with a production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Last Night of Ballyhoo” that begins Friday, Aug. 29. Tickets are $15.

    Mundelein High School senior Monica Tipperreiter had her heart set on playing one of the leads in the school's spring musical until the discovery of a brain tumor dashed her hopes. Now the school is restaging the production Friday night to give her another go at the role of a lifetime. “I'm very grateful for the second chance,” she said.

The students are part of Hamilton Wings' SCORE program, which gives at-risk kids a chance to experience the performing arts.

    Northwest Suburban High School District 214 will present its first all-district musical at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, and Thursday, July 10, at Wheeling High School’s Robert Sang Theatre. The all-district musical gives an opportunity to bring together talented students from across District 214 to share the stage and work together.

The fairy godmother loses her magic, Snow White doesn’t want to take care of the seven dwarves, and the Big Bad Wolf claims he’s “reformed.” Add princesses, princes, evil stepsisters, Hansel and Gretel, witches, and other characters to the mix and you have Spotlight Youth Theater’s original production of “Grimm Fairy Tales.”

    Maine West High School will be one of the first high schools in Illinois to stage the Elton John and Tim Rice musical “Aida,” when the show runs May 2-4 at the school, 1755 S. Wolf Road, in Des Plaines.

    When Maine West High School senior Elizabeth Stenholt recently was honored at a recent school board meeting for excellence in the performing arts, Principal Audrey Haugan urged everyone to watch for Elizabeth because “she’s going to be a star.” Sound advice. At 18, Elizabeth, who plays the lead in West’s upcoming musical, “Aida,” already has built a resume of more than 40 performances.

    Spring musicals are coming to Prospect and Wheeling High Schools this week. At Prospect, “Shrek the Musical,” began Tuesday and runs through Saturday, May 3, while at Wheeling, “RENT School Edition” is playing Thursday through Saturday.
