At a time when suburban schools are pushing back hard against taking over the states share of teacher retirement costs, many are paying thousands of dollars sometimes hundreds of thousands in penalties to Illinois pension systems for giving big raises to administrators and teachers. Suburban schools charged the highest penalties are Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54, West Aurora District 129, Barrington Area Unit District 220, Hawthorn Elementary District 73, Elgin Area School District U-46 and Naperville District 203, a Daily Herald investigation shows.

Golden Apple Wednesday announced 32 finalists for the prestigious award for excellence in teaching, with three of them from the Northwest suburbs. They are Tricia Michele Fuglestad, who teaches art to kindergarten through 5th grade at Dryden Elementary School in Arlington Heights; Maria Barba, who teaches 3rd grade at Douglas MacArthur Elementary School in Hoffman Estates; and Robert William Taylor, who teaches 2nd grade at Central Road Elementary School in Rolling Meadows.

Relative calm greeted Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54s decision to eliminate 78 classroom positions Thursday, especially when compared to last years controversial staff cuts. The new staffing plan also met with much less resistance than one in Barrington Unit District 220 last week that featured many of the same elements reductions due to declining enrollment, the loss of a funding grant and the continuation of a fledgling Chinese language immersion program.

Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 board members this month will consider a staffing plan for next school year that would cut as many as 78 teaching and support staff positions. Officials say the cuts are necessary because of declining enrollment and the uncertain renewal of a state grant for the districts early childhood program.

Dist. 54 Foundation Mardi Gras raises $32,000 Mar 5, 2012 12:00 AM
The Schaumburg Township Elementary School Foundation hosted its 11th signature Mardi Gras and Casino gala Friday, Feb. 17, at The Stonegate Conference Centre in Hoffman Estates. Guests were greeted by Captain Jack Sparrow impersonator Rick Aspen and enjoyed casino games, dinner and prizes, bringing in more than $32,000, which will fund enrichment programs for the School District 54 community.
