    They have different backgrounds and different passions, but the high school seniors named to the Northwest Suburban Daily Herald Academic Team share the conviction it is their duty to contribute to society. "I look forward to someday being able to help those in need through the wonders of human ingenuity and medical technology -- on a scale I had never before thought possible," writes Antonio Spina, of Bartlett High School.

    St. Charles N. handles pressure, Schaumburg May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
    No matter which of the five kicks in a penalty kick shootout a player is slated to take, there is bound to be pressure. Shootouts are pressure-packed situations by their very nature. But Lauren Koehl stepped up to take the fifth of St. Charles North's kicks on Friday night with a pressure unique to the shootout with Schaumburg: she could win the match for her team by converting her kick.

    Barrington’s Scarbrough has reason to smile May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
    Barrington's AJ Scarbrough is usually smiling and he had a good reason for it during Friday's Class 3A state track prelims in Charleston. Scarbrough set a school-record in the triple jump and leads the field going into Saturday's finals. Hersey's Mark Balmes also advanced in the shot put and discus and Conant's Ben Bowers qualified in the high jump and 110 hurdles.

    After a cameo in the round of 16 at the state tennis tournament, the Barrington team of George Coll and Varun Parekh bid farewell to its doubles opponents in the championship bracket. One round later, the Broncos standout duo fell in three sets to Bloomington's Ricky Zamudio-Nathan Cavanaugh at Buffalo Grove late Friday afternoon, ending their tournament run. The straight-set loss finished a marvelous postseason which included a Mid-Suburban League title, a second-place finish at the Schaumburg sectional and a 3-2 state tournament record following a 6-1, 4-6, 4-6 defeat to the Bloomington tandem.

    The high school state track and field semifinals took place Friday on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

     
  • Schaumburg squeezes out a win at York May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
    The elements at York on Thursday afternoon weren't exactly conducive to a pitchers duel. But there were Dukes hurler Louis Alcaraz and his counterpart, Schaumburg's Max Paolicchi, both throwing shutouts through almost 5 innings in the face of a gusty 30-mph wind blowing straight out to left field. Then the floodgates opened — especially for the Saxons. Visiting Schaumburg got only had 6 hits, but 5 of them came in the final two frames as the 10th-seeded Saxons defeated York 4-3 in a Class 4A regional semifinal host by the Dukes in Elmhurst. Schaumburg (22-13) moves on to play St. Charles North at 10 a.m. Saturday in the regional final.

    Barrington’s Coll-Parekh still in front draw May 24, 2012 12:00 AM
    George Coll and Varun Parekh took a giant stride toward their intended destination in the boys tennis state tournament Thursday. The Barrington duo won their first three doubles matches on their home courts to stay alive in the front draw and gain a spot in the fourth round of championship bracket play Friday morning. The Mid-Suburban League champs will meet 3-4 seed New Trier (Alex Mang-Arthur Ozga) at 9 a.m. today in Buffalo Grove in what promises to be an entertaining and exciting second day of the 97th state series. Tournament favorites Hinsdale Central and New Trier lead the pack in the team race with 24 and 22 points, respectively, with Lake Forest a surprise at 22 points. Oak Park-River Forest (20) and Stevenson (17) are right there in the team race, too.

  • Schaumburg savors victory over Conant May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
    The scene on the pitch at Schaumburg told the story. Saxons players were celebrating all around freshman Sarah Kozlowski, while Conant's players were staring in disbelief. After six long years, Schaumburg's wait was over. Kozlowski's goal in the 89th minute beat the Cougars 2-1 Wednesday night, sending the Saxons into their own sectional final Friday night against St. Charles North. The defeat ended a memorable run for the Conant seniors, who lifted two state trophies in their four years and were clearly one of the state's top programs.

    Schaumburg senior pitcher Renee Kakareka knew if she just pitched her game Wednesday her teammates would come through with the bats, despite the fact the Saxons were facing one of the state's premier pitchers in Elgin senior Hannah Perryman. She was right. Kakareka threw a commanding 2-hitter and senior Sarah May came through with the game-winning hit in the fifth inning as No. 10 seed Schaumburg upended No. 6 Elgin 2-1 in the semifinals of the Class 4A Elk Grove softball regional.

  • Conant success continues May 19, 2012 12:00 AM
    Conant ended its most successful regular season by splitting a doubleheader with New Trier on Saturday in Hoffman Estates. In a battle between two top-seeded sectional teams, the Cougars (30-3) outlasted the Trevians in Game 1 for a 2-1 victory in nine innings. Junior Miranda Cavin singled, went to second on Kim Jacobson's sacrifice and eventually scored on an error in the bottom of the ninth for the winning run. Plus other softball games from the northwest suburbs.

    Retiring Schaumburg coach Paul Groot returned to his alma mater and left with 20-20 vision after an 8-0 victory at Wheeling. Max Paolicchi, Matt Brancato and Kevin Sola combined on a 2-hitter as the Saxons won 20 games for the 20th time in Groot's 28-year tenure. Plus more on wins by Prospect, St. Viator and Leyden and a tough doubleheader loss by Hersey.

    Schaumburg (14-2-4) will meet its long-time Mid-Suburban West rival Conant in the sectional for the third time in as many seasons thanks in part to Riley Williams' goal in the 52nd minute and a water-tight Saxons defense which held Elk Grove all-state striker Kelli Hubly to just 1 goal in a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon in the Class 3A Elk Grove regional title game. Williams' goal gave the No. 4-seeded Saxons a 2-goal advantage, and the Saxons managed to fight off a courageous comeback from the Grens (13-8-1) to extend their postseason run in thrilling style.
