A significant body of research suggests that the more children read, the better readers they become. As part of the district’s Literary Task Force, officials learned that experts recommend that every classroom should have 1,000 books to meet the wide range of abilities and interests of the children.

    A man suspected of drunk driving slammed his car into Eisenhower Junior High in Hoffman Estates while fleeing from a traffic stop early Saturday morning, causing significant damage to the school's gymnasium. According to a message on Eisenhower's website, a structural engineer will be visiting the school today to determine a plan of action for the necessary repairs. The school was planning on conducting physical education classes and basketball practices outdoors.

    Elk Grove Village police have made an arrest in connection with a Tuesday bank robbery, officials said. Parkway Bank, 951 Meacham Road in Elk Grove Village, was robbed about noon by a man wearing sunglasses, a light blue baseball cap and a black jacket, according to an email from the FBI.

    The public is invited to a forum hosted by Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54, Palatine Township Elementary District 15 and Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 to share information about Senate Bill 16 at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 at Schaumburg High School, 1100 W. Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg. Officials from the three districts say Senate Bill 16 would dramatically reduce their state funding by redistributing general state aid they now receive to districts in other communities.

    A backpack containing emergency equipment and the names and contact information of every student was stolen from outside Lincoln Prairie Elementary School in Hoffman Estates after it was left behind by a teacher during an afternoon recess Friday. The backpack was found empty by a Hoffman Estates police officer and returned to Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 on Monday — the first time its absence had been noticed, district officials said.
