    Those who seeded the teams for the Class 4A Maine East girls volleyball sectional were right on the money. It will be top-seeded Loyola (25-9) or No. 2 Schaumburg (25-13) on Thursday night trying to cash a ticket into Saturday’s Evanston supersectional. The Saxons advanced with a 25-14, 18-25, 25-21 triumph over the No. 3 Blue Demons in Tuesday’s semifinal while the Ramblers won their semifinal 25-15, 25-17 over No. 4 Evanston.

     
  • Schaumburg rises to the occasion at Maine East Nov 4, 2014 10:49 PM
    Schaumburg’s first sectional appearance in seven years came down to a third set on Tuesday night in Park Ridge. And it set up just fine for the Saxons, who realized they had some business to take of following the second set. “We might have come out a little overconfident (in the second set) because we won the first game kind of decisively,” said Saxons senior slugger Oyinkan Akinola. “Then we realized this is a sectional match. There’s no tomorrow if you lose. Everyone stepped up and did what they had to do.” Akinola, who put down 5 of her match-high 19 kills in the final set, and the Saxons rose to the challenge to pull out a 25-14, 18-25, 25-21 triumph over No. 3-seeded Maine East in the Blue Demons’ own Class 4A sectional.

    For the first time since 2007, Schaumburg’s girls volleyball team is back in the sectionals of the Class 4A state tournament. The Saxons won their 15th regional last Thursday night over Niles West which was the tourney host. No. 2-seeded Schaumburg (24-13) finds itself in a similar situation today. Maine East is the sectional host and the No. 3-seeded Blue Demons are Schaumburg’s opponent in the second semifinal today at 6:30 p.m.

     
  • Girls swimming: Fremd finishes on top Nov 2, 2014 7:45 PM
    Of the eight individual events contested in Saturday’s Mid-Suburban League girls swimming championships at Barrington, only one of them had a winner from Fremd. That was senior Saki Takumiya in the 100-yard butterfly. But this Fremd team is clearly more than the sum of its parts. The Vikings won the medley and 200 free relays, and no Fremd invidual entry finished lower than sixth place. That kind of consistency combined with a touch of misfortune for Barrington helped the Vikings claim the Mid-Suburban League title for a third straight year. Fremd finished with 305 points to Barrington’s 260.

    The Schaumburg Class 3A boys cross country sectional lived up to its hype, but also offered plenty of surprises. McHenry senior Jessie Reiser edged Conant senior Zach Dale for the individual title, while Hersey, McHenry, Barrington, Lake Zurich and Hoffman Estates earned team advancement to the state meet.

    Jacobs senior Lauren Van Vlierbergen made the most of her first race at Busse Woods in the Class 3A Schaumburg girls cross country sectional, while Palatine continued to dominate from start to finish. Van Vlierbergen battled Palatine junior Kelly O’Brien for over 2 miles before flashing great closing speed in the final 800 meters to run away with the sectional title in a course-record 17:07.

    Saturday's sectional cross country meet at Busse Woods Forest Preserve features several compelling storylines. Topping the list is the first of two anticipated showdowns between two of the state top individual competitors, Conant's Zach Dale and McHenry's Jesse Reiser.

    According to both Prospect senior diver Dana Liva and her coach, Antonino Bondi, Liva’s performance in Friday’s Mid-Suburban League championship meet was far from perfect. The judges, at the very least, sure liked it a lot. Liva completed a four-year run of MSL championships with a meet and pool record score of 492.45 at Barrington High School.

    Just two weeks ago, Schaumburg won the Mid-Suburban West girls volleyball championship. On Thursday night in Skokie, the Saxons’ 2014 resume picked up another championship.Morgan Sterrett put down 6 kills while Mallory Gerber added 3 as No. 2-seeded Schaumburg posted a 25-17, 25-20 victory over No. 7 Niles West to win the Niles West Class 4A regional crown.

    Addison Trail junior running back Mike Hundley and Aurora Christian senior defensive back Jacolby Maxwell have earned Daily Herald MVP honors for their high school football performances in Week 9. Hundley rushed for 301 yards in helping the Blazers beat Willowbrook to clinch an outright conference championship in the West Suburban Gold, while Maxwell had 3 interceptions (along with 3 receiving touchdowns) to help the Eagles top Leo and gain a playoff berth.

    Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball champion Hersey kicked off postseason play with a 25-16, 25-13 victory over No. 15 Glenbrook North in semifinals of the Class 4A Stevenson regional on Tuesday nigh, while MSL West champ Schaumburg advanced with a three-set victory over Resurrection at Niles West.

    Palatine new it would be facing Schaumburg’s best shot as the Pirates pursued an outright Mid-Suburban West football championship. And sure enough, the Saxons, last year’ West winner, made the Pirates earn their title for 48 minutes in a rousing 45-35 contest in Palatine on Friday night. “It’s been a great year for these players and for the program, winning the conference title,” said Palatine coach Rick Splitt. “The seniors set the goal for themselves, and after a tough start to the season they responded.”

    With the Hersey girls volleyball team 1 point away from a Mid-Suburban League championship, the Huskies’ Gabri Olhava gave her longtime friend Courtney Stedman the look. Seconds later, the big crowd at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights was looking at the 2014 MSL champs. Stedman quick set Olhava, who put down the kill that gave Hersey a 10th conference title with a 25-20, 25-16 victory over Mid-Suburban West champion Schaumburg.

    As many as 376 hopefuls from all around Illinois have gathered for the most important weekend of high school girls tennis, as tournament host Buffalo Grove and the 11other Mid-Suburban League schools welcome the field to the area. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Thursday and runs through Saturday. The semifinals are schedule to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Buffalo Grove, with the championship matches to follow.

    Ready for some girls volleyball? It's the 42nd edition of the Mid-Suburban League championship on Thursday night at 6 p.m. at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights. East champion Hersey, the host, meets West champion Schaumburg. All-conference players will be honored at 6:20 p.nm.
