    Girls soccer Schaumburg 2, Hoffman Estates 1: The host Saxons made a pair of first-half goals from Emily Waterloo hold up in MSL West play. One of Waterloo’s goal was a penalty kick, and Lexi Awdziejczyk assisted on the other. Natalie Nagrant scored in the second half for the Hawks. Prospect 4, Highland Park 1: The Knights advanced to a morning semifinal against Moline in the State Line Challenge at Moline. Rosie Pettenuzzo, Kim Welk, Martini Kowalczuk and Andi Marfilius had the goals. Emily Novak assisted twice, and Maggie Sullivan and Kristin Frasco had 1 each. Hersey 9, Wheeling 0: The Huskies remained unbeaten in MSL play as Lauren Gierman scored 4 goals, Sara Magnuson had 2, and Jessica Schmidt, Morgan Harris and Emma Cooke each had 1. Hersey is 9-0 against MSL foes.

     
  • Manning circles back to opportunity at Schaumburg May 1, 2014 10:39 PM
    Marty Manning grew up as a basketball player in the Schaumburg Athletic Association. Manning grew up as a high school basketball coach in Huntley. So, in a way there were growing pains as Manning weighed whether or not he should leave one quality job for another after the top spot at Schaumburg opened up when Matt Walsh resigned in March.

     
  • Superb field for Wanner Invite May 1, 2014 5:22 PM
    Current Hersey boys track and field coach Ken Blazek still remembers his days as a hurdler for then-Prospect coach Joe Wanner and the Knights back in the day. One of Blazek’s favorite memories came at the Knights’ Wanner Invitational. “I have always described this meet to our kids as the first state meet of the year,” Blazek said. “If you can’t get up for this meet, I don’t know what you can get up for.”

     
  • Clutch finish helps Hersey past Meadows Apr 30, 2014 11:00 PM
    Being the conscientious athlete she is, Angela Schmiederer was not entirely happy with her final at-bat that won Hersey a softball game on Wednesday. “I got the bunt sign (with a runner on first and no outs),” said the Huskies senior catcher and Iowa recruit. “And I failed to get it down.” But she didn’t fail to make up for it a few pitches later. With Dani Sychowski still getting to second base on a wild pitch, Schmiederer was able to swing away. And she produced her best swing of the game — a rocket to the center field fence where the ball rolled under for a ground-rule double allowing Sychowski to cross the plate in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Hersey a dramatic 12-11 victory over visiting Rolling Meadows.

     
  • Another shutout for MSL leader Hersey Apr 30, 2014 10:22 PM
    After continuing to snap at the heels of league-leading Buffalo Grove, Hersey finally took over the spot in Mid-Suburban League girls soccer by earning a 3-0 victory Wednesday night at Schaumburg. The Huskies (14-4-0, 8-0-0) got their 13th shutout of the year and have amassed 24 points in the league standings, 2 points clear of the Bison. Buffalo Grove drew 1-1 at home against Conant on Wednesday.

    Shannon Felde one day wishes to aid people with medical issues. “I’ve always wanted to become a nurse,” said the Schaumburg junior pitcher. She also loves softball. “I couldn’t imagine my life without softball,” she said. So Felde has her game plan all set. The Illinois State recruit plans to study community health education in her four years on the Normal campus while playing the sport she loves.

     
  • Schaumburg, Elk Grove excel in Streamwood Invite Apr 26, 2014 10:10 PM
    Schaumburg won top honors in the the 400- and 800-meter relays and had invidual winners in long jump (Stacey Smith), pole vault (Cesar Arenas), triple jump (Edwin Kelly), 100 (Shandall Thomas) and 200 meters (Tom Ciupka) to claim the team championship in the 11-team boys track invitational hosted by Streamwood on Saturday.

     
  • Dry spell ends for Schaumburg Apr 25, 2014 10:46 PM
    Schaumburg has ended a 15-year boys gymnastics drought. The Saxons had not won the Hawk Invitational in Hoffman Estates since 1999. That changed Friday when Schaumburg came up with its best meet of the season to claim the title with a score of 139.75.

     
  • Schaumburg grabs share of West lead Apr 25, 2014 10:50 PM
    Schaumburg’s softball team moved into a first-place tie with Conant (9-0, 6-0) in the Mid-Suburban West with its 16-2 five-inning victory at Palatine on Friday. The Saxons (13-4, 6-0) received a 4-hitter from junior Shannon Felde (6-1), who struck out six while junior shortstop Elaine Walker helped ignite the offense by going 2-for-4 with a home run, double and 2 RBI. Classmate Roxanne Kakareka also belted a homer for Saxons and collected 4 RBI.

     
  • Donohue delivers walk-off winner for Prospect Apr 25, 2014 10:53 PM
    Prospect pulled out an extra-inning victory in Mid-Suburban League baseball Friday. The Knights first rallied to score 4 runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and tie up their game against visiting Palatine. That set the stage for Pat Donohue, who hit a walk-off 2-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to finish a 7-5 Knights triumph.

    Conant’s boys tennis team continues to thrive under new coach Dave Koleno. The Cougars provided the most recent evidence against host Schaumburg on Thursday afternoon, recording a 7-0 shutout to run their Mid-Suburban League record to 3-1-0.

     
  • Schaumburg’s Alt tags a no-hit halt on another foe Apr 24, 2014 11:55 PM
    Paige “No Hit’ Alt did it again. The Schaumburg sophomore threw her third straight no-hitter on Thursday with a 10-0 shutout over visiting Wheeling in five innings. Alt has not given up a hit in 17 innings. Her previous two no-hitters were against the Prospect and Hoffman Estates softball teams.

     
  • Manning leaving Huntley for Schaumburg Apr 23, 2014 7:18 PM
    Huntley High School boys basketball coach Marty Manning told his returning players on Tuesday he has accepted the same position at Schaumburg, according to sources at that meeting. Pending the approval of the District 211 school board at its meeting Thursday night, Manning will succeed Matt Walsh as the next coach of the Saxons.

     
  • Schaumburg stays focused, tops Fremd Apr 23, 2014 9:11 PM
    After senior second baseman Tracy Welninski ripped a homer over the left field fence to lead off the second inning, Fremd’s softball team got the early jump on host Schaumburg. “We weren’t too nervous,” said Saxons senior right fielder Jamie Kudjer. “We just pick up our intensity and focus more. And when we do that, we star getting hits.” These Saxons have been a ‘hit’ all season and Wednesday proved to be no exception. Off to their best start in coach Ellen Abreu’s four seasons, Schaumburg rallied past the Vikings for a 6-2 decision and remained undefeated in the Mid-Suburban West.

     
  • Schocking finish as Schaumburg wins again Apr 23, 2014 10:05 PM
    Schaumburg’s Ryan Schocker jolted Conant on Thursday. Schocker lined a two-out single to right driving home Michael Fan to lift the Saxons to a 5-4 baseball victory in Schaumburg. “I just wasn’t going to give up,” said Schocker, who was behind in the count early and worked it to 3-2 before delivering the winning hit. “I did what had to get done. I worked the count and then I had to get the right pitch. It was a 3-2 fastball and I just went with the pitch.” Fan was down 0-2 in the count with two outs but was able to coax a walk. He then advanced to second on a passed ball and scored easily on Schocker’s rip to right. The victory kept the Saxons (10-1, 5-0) atop the Mid-Suburban West and made a winner out of starter Brendan Beck, who improved to 4-0.

    Fremd managed to scored 3 runs without a hit to claim a 3-2 victory over visiting Conant on Tuesday in Mid-Suburban West baseball action.

     
  • Donohue gets Prospect’s bats going Apr 21, 2014 9:04 PM
    Pat Donohue changed Prospect’s fortunes with just one swing of his bat Monday in Mt. Prospect. Donohue, who bats first, lined the first pitch of Prospect’s first inning at-bat into center for a single. That spark got the Knights, who had been struggling offensively in their last two games, off to a great start as Prospect rolled past Buffalo Grove 11-0 in 5 innings.
