Productive day for Glenbard N. at Maine EastFeb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
Heading to Champaign next weekend? Your probabilities of running into a few young men with bleached blonde hair are looking strong. And when you do, you will have found Glenbard North's 7 state-qualified wrestlers, all hoping for individual state titles and traditionally wearing the hairdos. Success for the Panthers came easy at the Class 3A Maine East sectional Saturday afternoon as Jon Marmolego (120 pounds), Jered Cortez (126) and Brian Murphy (152) all grabbed first-place wins in their respective weight classes, while Jimique Davis at 160 took second place, Patrick Augstyn (106) and Johnny Gosinski (132) placed third and Colton Wegner (170) sneaked into Champaign in fourth place. “We brought 10 guys here, seven got out and I can remember when we'd be happy if we got one guy out,” said Panthers' coach Mark Hahn. “To get seven guys out that's pretty good. We had five in the finals, pretty good tournament, all the way around.”

Leyden recovers, finishes Day 1 in sixth Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
Last season Leyden found itself in sixth place at the state tournament after all was said and done. That’s the exact same position the Eagles are in this season after the first day at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford. Led by junior Reba Hall, ninth individually after six games of bowling in the books on Day 1, Leyden stands only 355 pins behind co-leaders Lockport and Rockford Jefferson. Hall, who took home the third place medal at state in 2012 while only a sophomore, rolled games of 257 and 244 Friday enroute to a series total of 1308.

Prospect aims for outright title; Schaumburg tries to turn back Fremd Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
With two conference games remaining, Mid-Suburban League races are starting to take shape in both divisions. In the East, Elk Grove (11-12, 5-3) visits Prospect (14-9, 7-1) tonight in a rematch of a thrilling contest on Jan. 11 in which the Knights pulled out a 60-59 victory. While Prospect has already clinched a share of the East, a win for the Knights gives them the division outright and assures their spot in the Mid-Suburban title game on Feb. 20. In the West, Schaumburg (14-9, 6-2) hosts Fremd (16-7, 5-3) with the opportunity to lock up a share of their third straight West title. The Saxons won the first meeting in convincing fashion 46-35.

Schaumburg overcomes obstacles, Glenbard North Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
There was a lot working against Schaumburg on Tuesday night. The host Saxons were facing an athletic Glenbard North squad that likes to trap and use their speed to force turnovers. And to further complicate matters, the Saxons were playing without three-year starter Kyle Bolger, who was sitting out with an undisclosed injury. But through it all, Schaumburg maintained its composure, overcame an outstanding individual performance from the Panthers’ Chip Flanigan and converted at the free throw line in the final minute to pull out a 61-55 nonconference victory.

The 5-foot-6 senior sharpshooter made four 3-point baskets in the final 16 minutes to help Prospect’s girls basketball team put away a 58-44 victory over Schaumburg in the Mid-Suburban League crossover. “I’m going to miss playing here,” said Molini (15 points), who joined sophomore teammates Taylor Will (18 points) and Catherine Sherwood (career-17 points) in double figures.

Energized Fremd second at sectional Feb 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Fremd was looking to bounce back after its regional meet, and sophomore duo Sydney Plichta and Christine Radochonski set the tone for the Vikings on Monday. Plichta opened by taking second on the beam (9.5), and Radochonski kept it flowing in the second rotation by taking third on the floor (9.55) in leading Fremd to second place at its own sectional with 146.225 points.

Confident Conant in just the right ‘state’ of mindFeb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
Conant coach Jennifer Mikrut knew it was going to be a good day for the Cougars after only two games were in the books at Saturday’s Fremd girls bowling sectional.“We were in first place at that time,” said Mikrut, “and it really gave the girls a lot of confidence. It was an outstanding kickoff to the day and they were excited. At that point, I think they knew what they could do.”What the Cougars did was erase the memory of last year’s sectional tournament – when Conant missed out on a state berth by just eight pins – to win Saturday at Arlington Lanes and move on to next weekend’s state tourney at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford.Conant’s total six-game score of 5838 bested second-place Prospect by just 73 pins, but the Knights weren’t disappointed as they also qualified for a trip to Cherry Bowl with their runner-up placement.

Meadows prepares for Quincy ND with 24th win Feb 1, 2013 12:00 AM
It was fitting that Angie Kirchoff’s shooting touch gave Barrington the breathing room it needed needed to pick up a victory on Friday night. After all, it was Kirchoff’s sweet shooting in the third quarter that helped the Fillies girls basketball team erase a 6-point deficit. And her most important shots came in a pressure-packed situation at the foul line as her 2 free throws with eight seconds left turned a 1-point lead into a 41-38 victory over Conant in Mid-Suburban West action.
