  • Couple visiting Schaumburg High, on disabilities: ‘The best thing that ever happened’ Sep 15, 2014 7:22 PM
Never let challenges get in the way of your dreams, Jay Cramer and Katy Sullivan told high school students on Monday. They should know. The couple -- who act, sing, and compete athletically -- are both disabled. “Falling that day is the best thing that ever happened to me,” Cramer said, talking about the opportunities he has had throughout his recovery. “Your whole life can change in the blink of an eye.”

  • Once again, Glenbard West is best Sep 13, 2014 3:33 PM
Glenbard West just keeps rolling. Last year, the Hilltoppers won the Class 3A girls cross country state title, and they haven’t missed a beat in starting this season. The previous weekend, Glenbard West ran to impressive victory in a loaded Hinsdale Central Invite, and the Hilltoppers kept it going on Saturday at the 40th annual Harvey Braus Invitiational at Lake Park in Roselle. Junior Lindsay Graham took control of the race in the second mile and cruised to the individual title in 16:49, powering Glenbard West to the team title with 27 points.

  • Rezny’s big play sparks a Rolling Meadows win Sep 13, 2014 12:39 AM
While playing on the under levels, Alex Rezny was a linebacker and quarterback for the Rolling Meadows football program. But when the Mustangs’ defensive end was injured for their final two playoffs games last fall, the 6-foot-1 Rezny was called up to the varsity. “Alex stepped in at defensive end for those two games and looked like he had been playing there all season,” said Mustangs coach Matt Mishler. “He’s just flat-out a football player, period.” No one would have disagreed on Friday night. With his team trailing 13-6, Rezny turned the momentum into the host Mustangs’ favor with 7:11 left in the game. He broke through and tackled the Schaumburg quarterback in the backfield and then stripped the football away and raced 56 yards for a touchdown that sparked his team’s 18-13 triumph.

  • Fremd keeps share of West lead Sep 10, 2014 11:02 PM
The Fremd girls volleyball team, led by senior outside hitter Lane Hindenburg’s 9 kills, remained in a first-place tie with Schaumburg in the Mid-Suburban West after a 25-23, 25-9 victory over visiting Conant on Wednesday night.

  • Schaumburg bounces back, evens score with Conant Sep 9, 2014 10:44 PM
The writing on the back of Andy Pancratz’ T-shirt summed it up so well. Team Pancratz. With many of their relatives, friends and neighbors on hand to watch, Andy’s wife Jeanette and his daughter Drewann coached against each other for the second time in three days. This time, it was Jeanette’s Schaumburg girls volleyball team capturing a 25-19, 25-15 victory over Drewann’s Conant Cougars in Hoffman Estates on Tuesday night. On Saturday, it was the Cougars who won a three-game match for seventh place at the Peggy Scholten Volleyball Classic.

  • Schaumburg, Hersey draw 1-1 Sep 9, 2014 10:38 PM
Opening night in Mid-Suburban League boys soccer demonstrated how difficult life can be in this league. Schaumburg and Hersey couldn’t decide a winner after 100 minutes of play in a 1-1 draw at Roland Goins Stadium on Tuesday in Arlington Heights.

  • A Scholten Classic, family style Sep 6, 2014 10:42 PM
When retired Schaumburg athletic director John Selke hired Jeanette Pancratz as the Saxons volleyball coach in 1989, he could never have imagined what he was seeing Saturday morning. For that matter, neither could Jeanette’s husband Andy. But there they were, Selke and Andy Pancratz, watching Jeanette coaching the Saxons 25 years later against a Conant team coached by Drewann Pancratz. Yes, Drewann, the daughter of Jeanette and Andy. No one off hand can recall a mother and daughter facing one another as head coaches in a Mid-Suburban League sport. But it happened on Saturday in the Peggy Scholten Volleyball Classic. And it turned out to be a classic as the two teams battle to the wire before Conant pulled out a 16-25, 25-18, 27-25 victory for seventh place in the 16-team tournament.

  • Resilient McDonald bounces back for Barrington Sep 3, 2014 10:25 PM
Bailee McDonald is one of the top rebounders for coach Babbi Barreiro’s Barrington girls basketball team. The Fillies senior knows how to rebound in other ways, too. McDonald, who came back from foot surgery earlier this summer, was not exactly thrilled with her score of 50 in a Mid-Suburban League tri-meet last week against Prospect and Palatine at Makray Memorial. How did she rebound? How about a career-best and medalist round of 39 at Rob Roy Golf Course in Prospect Heights on Wednesday afternoon?

  • Hersey heats up, edges Fremd Sep 2, 2014 11:51 PM
Due to the humidity outside, the Fremd gymnasium was awfully hot. So was the action on the volleyball floor. In a decisive third game that was tied at every point to 10, and a total of 13 times, the final point came when junior Liz Fuerst leapt high near the outside pole and put down a kill to clinch a 26-24, 20-25, 25-23 victory for the Huskies.
