  • Quite a finish for Alexander, Conant Jan 31, 2015 9:02 PM
    As the early portion of the second day of the Mid-Suburban League’s wrestling championships continued at Hoffman Estates, Conant coach Chad Hay couldn’t help but notice that Barrington just kept on winning. Later on, when it mattered most, it was Hay’s own his team that couldn’t lose. Conant slowly erased a 26-point Broncos advantage, taking the lead for good with a nearly flawless finals performance to win the MSL tournament, and along with it a share of the overall conference title with Barrington. Conant outscored the MSL West champs 249-246 to capture a second consecutive tournament title in thrilling fashion. MSL East champ Prospect finish third in the tourney with 214.5 overall points.

    Three weeks ago, it took a last-second 3-pointer from Fremd junior guard Payton Kim to lift the Vikings to a 52-51 victory over the visiting Schaumburg Saxons. In the sequel, there would be no need for late-game heroics. Fremd used a mammoth second-half surge on Friday to get past host Schaumburg 59-44 in Mid-Suburban West boys basketball.

    Senior night was a big success for Fremd’s state-ranked girls basketball team as the Vikings clinched at least a tie for its sixth straight Mid-Suburban League West championship. Fremd improved to 20-4 and 8-0 with a 58-37 victory over visiting Schaumburg.

     
  • Fremd wins MSL meet; Prospect’s Gonzalez claims all-around Jan 30, 2015 11:22 PM
    Prospect’s Olivia Gonzalez entered the Mid-Suburban League girls gymnastic meet as a wild card. The Knights senior left as an ace. Gonzalez, who has been dealing with a back injury for most of the season, certainly wasn’t affected by it on Friday night in rolling to the all-around title in tough field with a 37.60. “She dominated,” said Prospect coach Randy Smith of Gonzalez all-around effort. “She’s been dealing with back issues and it just shows what type of competitor she is.” Fremd may have not dominated, but the Vikings definitely did enough to get the job done, rolling to its 22nd MSL title with 146.15 points at Hersey’s Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

    Not since coach Jean Walker’s 21-8 and 20-7 seasons in 1989 and 1990 had Prospect’s girls basketball team put together back-to-back 20 win seasons. But that changed on Tuesday night at Buffalo Grove where the Knights posted a 66-44 triumph that improved their record to 20-1 overall and 7-0 in the Mid-Suburban East.

    Sophomore Mallory Gerber was as quick to pinpoint the reason for Schaumburg’s most recent success as she was to deliver a team-high 5 assists in Saturday’s nonconference girls basketball game against visiting Niles West. “We have been developing better teamwork every game,” said the 5-foot-11 Gerber after the Saxons recorded their fifth straight win, 58-49, and eighth out of their last 10 games. “And better team chemistry.” Speaking of chemistry, Gerber has the right mix. With her 5 assists, she also scored 9 points and grabbed 3 rebounds.

    The Rolling Meadows boys basketball team notched its second win of the season over Wheeling with a 70-57 win in a Mid-Suburban East test Saturday. The visiting Mustangs, who won the first meeting 66-60 after trailing by 18 points in the third quarter, improved to 9-9 and 4-2 in the East while Wheeling slipped to 4-14 and 1-5. Matt Wojcik led the Mustang with 20 points, followed by sophomore Jared Murphy (19) and classmate Jack Schoessling (15).

     
  • Blackwell comes up big as Schaumburg bounces Palatine Jan 24, 2015 12:29 AM
    Schaumburg senior Jada Blackwell scored 9 of her team-high 13 points in overtime as the Saxons pulled out a 40-37 girls basketball victory over visiting Palatine in Mid-Suburban West play on Friday. Blackwell had a big 3-pointer in the extra session along with 4 free throws and a basket while classmate Brittany Reinhart also made a free throw as the hosts outscored the Pirates 10-7 in the extra four minutes.

     
  • Richae, Hoffman Estates lead a winning battle Jan 22, 2015 9:19 PM
    Mid-Suburban League girls bowlers were competing for a cure Thursday night at Arlington Lanes. While rolling their usual conference matches, the MSL players were also bowling for the fight against epilepsy. “In addition to showing awareness,” said Hoffman Estates coach Dan Pfligler, “the teams were raising money for the cause. All of the teams were wearing a ‘Bowl for the Cure – Strike Against Epilepsy’ t-shirt, and many people were supporting by not only wearing the shirts but also making donations. Meanwhile, on the lanes, the Hawks continued to excel. Hoffman Estates defeated Buffalo Grove 7-2, led by sophomore Amanda Richae, who excelled at Wednesday’s meet by rolling a 699 series — the best in the league so far this year.

    In describing his team’s 68-40 win over visiting Leyden on Tuesday night, Schaumburg girls basketball coach Curtis Goodwin said his Saxons got off to a slow start and then picked up their energy. He could have been describing the overall season. After beginning 4-7, the surging Saxons have won six of their last eight games and three straight to climb above .500 at 10-9.

     
  • Buffalo Grove wins twice at Lake Forest Jan 19, 2015 10:55 PM
    Buffalo Grove’s girls basketball team enjoyed a double-win day at the Martin Luther King tournament at Lake Forest High School on Monday. The Bison (16-7), who finished 3-1 in the five-team round-robin, combined for 16 3-pointers in Monday’s two wins. They topped Lake Forest 78-52 and handled Deerfield 80-43.

    Hersey really took charge in its Saturday night boys basketball victory at Wheeling. The Huskies took six charges on their way to claiming an 84-49 victory in Mid-Suburban East action as they kept a share of the division lead with Elk Grove.

     
  • Prospect's Larock, Rolling Meadows' Johnston savor all-around success Jan 17, 2015 9:51 PM
    Prospect senior Maddie Larock and Rolling Meadows junior Kelly Johnston both are eyeing a big finish at the girls gymnastics state meet this season. Larock and Johnston took a big step toward that goal on Saturday, putting on state-worthy performances in tying for the all-around with 37.50 at the Prospect Invitational. Larock took first on the bars (9.5) and had second-place finishes on vault (9.65) and beam (9.55) in leading the Knights to the team title with a season-best score of 144.3. Schaumburg hit a season-best 140.45 to take second, followed by Rolling Meadows (134.85), Buffalo Grove (132.35), Elk Grove (115.60) and Wheeling (109.95).

     
  • Mickey, Rolling Meadows muster up a big win Jan 17, 2015 12:50 AM
    Hannah Mickey scored a career-high 19 points to help the Rolling Meadows girl basketball team get past visiting Buffalo Grove 51-37 on Friday night. The junior forward had 9 field goals, at least two in every quarter as the Mustangs improved to 14-5 and 2-3 in the Mid-Suburban East.
