    Hersey coach Mary Fendley could not recall in her 16 seasons losing two prominent players to injury (senior captains Annie Korff and Juliette Vainisi) during the same week. First, Vainisi suffered a dislocated elbow at practice and then Korff went out of Friday’s Wheaton North tournament game early in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury ankle. The young Huskies still got the result they were after, a 47-39 victory over Glenbard South.

     
  • Second half favors Hinsdale South over Schaumburg Dec 26, 2014 8:05 PM
    Everything was looking good for Schaumburg on Monday afternoon at the 41st Jack Tosh Tournament at York High School in Elmhurst. The Saxon had built a 36-21 lead in the second quarter with 2:10 left before halftime. More importantly, Schaumburg had been working the ball inside to get Hinsdale South 6-foot-11 junior center Barret Benson in foul trouble. Things took a dramatic turn for the worse for the Saxons in the second half. Schaumburg was outscored 35-12 in dropping the first-round game 61-48.

    Priya Sharma's passion for the environment and human rights is no passing fad. The Schaumburg High School junior traveled to Tanzania earlier this year to teach and promote healthy living, and is planning a second trip abroad next year to Peru. “The thing I am most passionate about is water and air pollution,” she says. “I see people walking down the street and throwing things, and it hurts. I really care about the Earth.”

    Schaumburg’s girls basketball team recovered smartly from an opening-round loss in the Wheaton North tournament to defeat Willowbrook 47-30 on Tuesday afternoon. The Saxons held a 1-point lead at the break but gradually pulled away in the second half outscoring the Warriors 29-13. Schaumburg’s defense limited Willowbrook to 1 free throw in the third quarter. Leading the charge for the Saxons were Tatiana Doroskin (18 points, 6 rebounds) and Jada Blackwell (14 points, 7 rebounds).

     
  • Fremd wins divisional title in Arizona Dec 23, 2014 12:12 AM
    The Mid-Suburban League’s first girls basketball team to board an airplane for competition will be returning home in high spirits. Fremd won the third-place game of the Vesper Division of the Nike Tournament of Champions on Monday in Phoenix, Ariz. The Vikings (13-2) topped McClatchy High School (Ca.) 65-38.

    The Palatine boys basketball team is no stranger to quick starts. On Tuesday, the squad zipped out to a 10-0 lead against Elk Grove, only to falter late in that contest and find themselves on the short end of a 69-62 outcome. With a possible third consecutive loss staring them in the face, Palatine traveled to Schaumburg Friday night to try and right the ship and came away with a hard-earned road win, 51-47 in Mid-Suburban West action.

    Fremd’s Christine Radochonski was looking to finish her final senior night girls gymnastics meet with a bang. And the Vikings senior did just that. Radochonski ended her night with a sizzling floor routine, taking first with a 9.9 in leading host Fremd to a first-place finish at the Mid-Suburban triangular meet with 147.55 in Palatine on Thursday.

    In 40-plus years of Mid-Suburban League girls bowling, there had been only six 300 games thrown until the gem last week by Karsyn Burgess of Wheeling put the total at 7. Now, make it 8. Buffalo Grove junior Joanne Savage stole the spotlight Wednesday, firing her first-ever 300 in the second game of her match against, of all teams, the Wildcats.

  • Schaumburg has a defensive day to remember Dec 16, 2014 10:16 PM
    After his team’s loss to Oak Park on Saturday, new Schaumburg coach Marty Manning said that he would prefer his team to stay away from Saturday games in the future. “We just didn’t have much energy Saturday,” Manning said before his team tipped off against Prospect on Tuesday night. “It’s tough playing back-to-back nights. I never liked it when I played. We will get to a Tuesday-Friday schedule next season because that’s what you play in the state playoffs and I want our kids ready for that.” Schaumburg seemed plenty ready Tuesday. They forced turnovers at the beginning and down the stretch to post a 47-40 victory over the Knights.

    Buffalo Grove wasn’t able to slow Prospect’s hot streak. The host Knights earned a 52-36 victory over the Bison on Friday, claiming their third straight victory and remaining perfect in the Mid-Suburban East at 2-0. Kyle Beyak (14 points), Patryk Niemiec (10 points, 8 rebounds) and Grant Miller (8 points, 4 assists) led a balanced scoring attack for the Knights.

     
  • Williams, Dellorto break 500 records in Meadows’ victory Dec 13, 2014 12:08 AM
    Rolling Meadows earned its first dual victory of the boys swimming season, topping Elk Grove 136-44 on Friday in the facility both teams share at Elk Grove High School in a Mid-Suburban East dual. Both teams got to celebrate program records in the 500-yard freestyle. Elk Grove senior Colin Williams won the event in 4:53.61, erasing the mark that had existed since 1977. It’s already Williams’ second team record of the season, as he established a new benchmark the previous week in the 200 IM. The second-place finisher in the 500 free was Rolling Meadows freshman Josh Dellorto. He touched in a personal-best 5:01.14 and also broke the Mustangs’ program record.

     
  • Short-handed Fremd hangs on at Conant; Barrington rolls Dec 12, 2014 12:25 AM
    Fremd’s girls basketball team overcame the absence of standout sophomore Grace Tworek on Thursday night and extended its winning streak to 16 games in the Mid-Suburban West with a 46-41 triumph at Conant. Senior Haley Gorecki led the Vikings (9-1, 3-0) with a game-high 22 points and also collected 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals while teammates Erin Lenahan and Bryana Hopkins each chipped in 8 points. Brianna Lewis handed out 4 assists with 2 steals and 6 points.

    The already boisterous atmosphere of a Mid-Suburban League girls bowling meet got an extra shot of adrenaline Wednesday night. Karsyn Burgess, a Wheeling freshman, fired the first 300 game the conference has seen since the 2010/11 season. A no-doubt-about-it final strike put Burgess in the MSL record books. “I’m really excited,” said the frosh. “I’m used to stringing strikes together, and after the ninth frame I was already pretty proud of myself. “Then came the 10th frame, and the pressure was on.”

    After starting the season with a pair of losses, Schaumburg’s boys basketball has found the winning groove. The Saxons worked overtime on Saturday at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights before posting a 59-54 victory over Hersey. Brendan Parker (18 points), Jason Schoo (13) and Charlie Quilco (10) weer top scorers for Schaumburg (4-2). Payton Haas and Joseph Coffaro each scored 18 points to pace Hersey (3-3).

    After being swept by rival Conant last season in both regular- season contests, the Schaumburg boys basketball team had a long wait before it got another crack at the Cougars. But the wait seemed to be well worth it as the Saxons hosted the Cougars and used a second-half explosion to push by their nemesis, 48-37, in Mid-Suburban League West play Friday night.

     
  • Rolling Meadows runs by Elk Grove Dec 6, 2014 12:42 AM
    Rolling Meadows junior guard Megan King put on a 3-point shooting clinic in the first half as the Mustangs began defense of their Mid-Suburban League East championship with a 65-49 victory at Elk Grove. King’s game-high 21 points all came in the first half from long distance as Meadows improved to 6-1 overall.
