O’Malley had a hat trick to lead the Black team, which was coached by St. Viator’s Bill Sanford, to a 16-8 victory over the White team.

2012-2013 Northwest Suburban Academic Team Jun 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Meet the members of the 2012-2013 Northwest suburban Academic Team, a remarkably diverse bunch, with different backgrounds, interests and goals. But their commonalities are what put them in a special category: very smart, enviably self-disciplined and acutely aware of the world around them. "My successes thus far show me one thing above all else: I have the capacity, and therefore the responsibility, to do more for the world," writes Benjamin Brissette, of Maine West.

Fremd’s girls, Barrington’s boys take Frisk/Paddock honors Jun 6, 2013 12:00 AM
There were no major surprises in the battles for varsity sports supremacy in the Mid-Suburban League for the 2012-13 school year. The usual suspects jockeyed for No. 1 in girls and boys sports throughout the fall, winter and spring seasons, and the two races were as close at the wire as a photo finish in the 100-meter dash. Fremd’s program won the Bob Frisk Paddock Trophy for girls for the fifth straight year, and Barrington edged defending champion Fremd for the Bob Frisk Paddock Cup for boys. Palatine and Prospect came in a solid 3-4 in both competitions.

Why Dist. 211 is rebuilding all its swimming pools May 31, 2013 12:00 AM
Palatine-Schaumburg District 211 plans to renovate pools at all five of the district's high schools, but parents and coaches say they have needed improvement for over a decade now because of their unusual design. "We weren't practicing starts the way you're supposed to do them, which then takes away a lot of your training," said Joey Arce, coach at Hoffman Estates High School.

Kendziera, Barrington relay strike gold May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
Prospect senior Dave Kendziera knew he had just one race left in his high school career so, he reasoned, why not go after it with everything he had? “I just figured I would go out as hard and as fast as I could and leave everything out there,” he said. The approach worked well. Kendziera, in his last race in a Prospect uniform in the finals of the Class 3A 300 hurdles, left little doubt about who the state champion would be.

Rolling Meadows, Schaumburg fall short in regional title games May 25, 2013 12:00 AM
The Rolling Meadows softball team may have been a No. 10 seed, but they gave No. 2 New Trier a battle to the finish in the championship game of the Trevians’ Class 4A regional on Saturday in Winnetka. New Trier (28-2) scored once in the fourth and fifth innings to pull out a 2-0 shutout behind junior pitcher Allison Quigley, who recorded 11 strikeouts. In the Schaumburg regional final, the host Saxons were eliminated by Glenbard North 8-6.

Semis elude Lin, Galvin May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
The allure of getting to play their game before huge crowds on the final day of the boys tennis state tournament eluded both Vincent Lin and Mack Galvin on Friday at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights. Lin (22-1), a sophomore, suffered his first defeat of the year to top seed Martin Joyce of Hinsdale Central in the quarterfinals. Galvin a freshman from Rolling Meadows, fell to 3-4 seed Jeremy Bush (29-4) of Stevenson in the fourth round, sending the two superb young players from the Mid-Suburban League into the backdraw.

DeLoye, Barrington quickly get back on track downstate May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
The disappointment that Barrington junior Parker Deloye felt after the high jump went away — quickly. All it took was two laps around the track by the members of the Broncos' 800-meter relay team, and all was well again with Deloye. During the prelims session of the Class 3A boys track and field state championships at Eastern Illinois University and O'Brien Field, Deloye missed the cut in the high jump but bounced back with a robust leadoff leg on the Broncos 800 relay. JP Brooks, Brendan Melynchuk and Scotty Miller joined him in a school record 1:28.64 to earn a spot in Saturdays' finals as the third overall seed. "This definitely makes up for earlier," Deloye said.

Alt, Schaumburg power into regional final May 24, 2013 12:00 AM
Schaumburg softball coach Ellen Stoddard had one message for her Saxons when they took the field for their own Class 4A regional semifinal game on Thursday. “We told them to ‘be intense and stayed relaxed’ ” she said. The Saxons took heed and were all on the same page. And the final page of the Schaumburg’s win came off the bat of freshman Paige Alt. Her second home run of her young career — and third 2-run homer of the game by the Saxons — made it 10-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning to end the game by the 10-run rule over No. 9 seed Elk Grove.

RM’s Galvin, Schaumburg’s Lin roll through first three rounds May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
With his cool, calm demeanor and 30-plus victories, Mack Galvin has shattered the stereotype of freshmen lacking the proper high school experience to be successful on his sport’s biggest stage, the state tournament. The Rolling Meadows frosh booked his place in today’s fourth round championship bracket after an impressive 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory over 9-16 seed Brandon Harris (24-7) of Edwardsville. The earned Galvin a spot opposite 3-4 seed Jeremy Bush, a four-time state qualifier from state power Stevenson. Schaumburg sophomore Vincent Lin will join Galvin in the round of 16 after a strong showing Thursday.
