For Europe’s best, this was the miracle at Medinah Sep 30, 2012 12:00 AM
It could be argued that this was the greatest comeback in sports history, considering the pressure, the circumstances, the location, the way the U.S. team had performed for two days and the sheer number of points Europe had to get in a single day of play at the Ryder Cup.

Furyk, Mickelson had their chances to win Sep 30, 2012 12:00 AM
One up. Two holes to play. That was the situation both Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk found themselves in Sunday afternoon at the Ryder Cup. Hang onto those leads and the U.S. would almost certainly claim victory at Medinah Country Club. Somehow, though, both matches unraveled before millions of unbelieving eyes.

Emotional Poulter recall’s Seve’s spirit Sep 30, 2012 12:00 AM
A clearly emotional Ian Poulter stood on the 18th green at Medinah Country Club on Sunday and remembered with fondness the person most people believe is the best European golfer of all time: Seve Ballesteros. He’d be the proudest man in the world right now,” Poulter said, his eyes welling up.

After not making it past the 15th hole in his first two Ryder Cup matches — a pair of morning-round thumpings at the hands of the red-hot pairing of Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley — Northwestern product Luke Donald finally found his form, and the 18th green, late Saturday evening.

Being at Ryder Cup the real deal Sep 29, 2012 12:00 AM
This week’s Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club certainly is different from your typical event, but the same question applies: Is it better to witness play on the course or from the couch? The comparison test was easy Saturday as long as you scored a ticket for the tournament. You could go to Medinah for the morning matches and back home for the afternoon matches.

Indomitable Poulter gives Europe some hope Sep 29, 2012 12:00 AM
There may be no better match play competitor in Ryder Cup history than England’s Ian Poulter. He’s kept Team Europe alive — at least barely — through two days of the 39th staging of the event at Medinah, and he gave a pulsating finish to Saturday’s closing session. After playing partner Rory McIlroy made birdie at No. 13, Poulter reeled off five birds in a row, the last of which clinched a 1-up victory over Americans Jason Dufner and Zach Johnson. Poulter and McIlroy were 2-down when their run began.

What it's like on Ryder's first teeSep 29, 2012 12:00 AM
The first tee at the Ryder Cup can be daunting. At Friday's opening bell, the chorus was in full swing as American and European fans chanted refrain after to refrain to show their support in attempts to drown out the opposition. Whether it was the chill in the air, the overwhelming warmth of the crowd of Medinah or the ever-mounting pressure in their hands, the first tee shots of the day went astray as veterans Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk hooked their opening drives over the fans and left of the fairway for Hole No. 1. The matches were officially under way, and so the accompanying pressure.

Poulter keeps Europeans in the hunt at Ryder Cup Sep 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley helped stake the Americans to their biggest lead in the Ryder Cup in more than 30 years. "The last two putts were massive," European captain Jose Maria Olazabal said after watching Poulter stay undefeated in this Ryder Cup.

USA players following captain’s orders Sep 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Like any Ryder Cup captain, Davis Love III has endured his share of second guessing, but the results speak for themselves. His rookies, led by Keegan Bradley, have combined to go 8-3, and Tiger Woods responded to his first Cup benching by cranking it up on the back nine Saturday afternoon in one of the most exciting matches of the weekend in front of 40,000 festive fans at Medinah Country Club . But most important for Love, the U.S squad followed up a great start on Friday with another dominant performance Saturday to take an overwhelming 10-6 lead over the Team Europe heading into today’s singles matches. Plain and simple, Love has pulled all the right strings, but like any good captain, he’ll never admit it.

Closing rush by Woods falls just short Sep 29, 2012 12:00 AM
Say this much for Tiger Woods: He can still send a lightning bolt of electricity across Medinah Country Club. Woods, who claimed the 1999 and 2006 PGA Championships at Medinah, had throngs of Ryder Cup fans going absolutely berserk Saturday afternoon as he and partner Steve Stricker clawed back being 4-down after nine holes and almost pulling out a half-point for the ages.
