Palatine can grin after win May 10, 2012 12:00 AM
Often a leader of races, Palatine junior Tess Wasowicz took control of a post-meet team photo. Were not going to smile, said a straight-faced Wasowicz, who then ... smiled. Naturally, she was kidding. Never mind that despite helping Palatine begin the finals of Thursdays Class 3A Grayslake North sectional by running a leg on the winning 3,200-meter relay, Wasowicz wasnt feeling all cheery. Coming off the 4 by 8 (3,200 relay), I was kind of tired and I was doubting myself (going into the 1,600 run), she said. But once I started the first lap in the mile, I just knew that I could take it over and that I could finish it off. Wasowicz won the 1,600 run in 5:02.40, well ahead of runner-up Katie Filosa (5:11.12) of Fremd, then came back two events later to help Palatine finish the meet in style, as the Pirates came from behind to win the 1,600 relay in 3:59.54. When it was over, Palatine was, yes, posing for pictures and, yes, smiling. The Pirates totaled 86 points, well ahead of Warren (73), which got a pair of wins from freshman standout Brittny Ellis (200, 400), who also anchored the winning 400 relay.

Postponed pecks prove potent for VH May 4, 2012 12:00 AM
Denied the chance to do their customary pre-race kissing of the baton Thursday night, after the final heat of the 1,600-meter relay was postponed due to lingering lightning in the area, Vernon Hills relay girls settled for a makeup kiss Friday at Stevenson, as the North Suburban Conference meet was concluded. Since freshman year, its always been like that, no matter whos on the team, Cougars senior Taylor Krue said. We (kiss) the baton in correct order and we just run. Its not just lip service. Vernon Hills captured the 1,600 relay in a season-best 4:02.8, as anchor Krue held off a surge by Helen Schlachtenhaufen of Lake Forest (4:02.9). Taylor Pearson, Abbie Letts and Ali Peacock ran the first three legs for the Cougars, with Pearson opening a lead that was never relinquished.

Ellis highlights Warren’s night May 3, 2012 12:00 AM
Not when Brittny Ellis ran like Brittny Ellis can, not when his team had so many other highlights, including a 1-2 finish in the 100-meter dash, was Warren girls track coach Ryan Dunn going to lament a botched relay exchange. Never mind that the error potentially could cost the Blue Devils the North Suburban Conference championship. A frustrating night for Warren, which was disqualified in the 400 relay in which it was seeded first, extended to other teams as well at Round Lake on Thursday night. With only the final heat of the 1,600 relay and the triple-jump finals remaining, the meet was stopped due to lightning in the area. After nearly 90 minutes, during which time coaches discussed whether to wait out the weather or complete the meet today and athletes hung out in Round Lakes gym, a decision was made. The games committee sent everyone home. The NSC meet will be resumed at 4 p.m. today at Stevenson, prior to the JV conference invite. Lake Forest is on the cusp of winning the championship. The Scouts have 83 points, 14 more than Vernon Hills. County-champ Warren (64), Libertyville (57) and Lakes (57) round out the top five, followed by Grant (56), Lake Zurich (29), Stevenson (24) and Wauconda (20).
