    Just as it has since 1910, the school at Grand Avenue and Route 83 in Lake Villa teemed with students and teachers Tuesday. Joseph J. Pleviak Elementary School has received new life as the home of Round Lake Area Unit District 116's kindergarten program. Lake Villa Elementary District 41 left the school after the 2013-14 academic season. “This is a fun place to be,” District 116 Superintendent Constance Collins said while students filed past her into Pleviak’s gymnasium for an assembly.

    More students than ever will attend class in trailers outside Round Lake High School starting in the 2014-15 academic season, officials said. The school's portable classroom total will double to 12 when an estimated 2,000 students return Tuesday, Aug. 19. “With the addition of the mobiles, we will essentially have a third of the student population at Round Lake High School receiving their instruction in modular units,” Principal Donn Mendoza said.

Pleviak School in Lake Villa, which District 116 will lease. “This is a wonderful opportunity for all of our kindergartners and for our staff to have extended time for the core instruction and core curriculum,” Melanie Arthur, coordinator of teaching and learning for District 116, told the Daily Herald.

    Round Lake Middle School music teacher Javier Diaz’s enthusiasm for choir has filtered to the pupils there. Since he was hired for the 2010-11 academic year, Diaz has taken the program from eight to about 90 students. There also are two choir classes part of the daily curriculum rather than a single after-school group. “I think the kids feed off my passion for the music,” said Diaz, 34, of Lake in the Hills.

    Bittersweet was the word of the morning Monday as Lake Villa Elementary District 41 teachers, students, board members and community members celebrated the start of summer break by closing Pleviak Elementary School. “We are all excited about the start of vacation, but today is sad because it’s the day we are closing Pleviak," said Board President Michael Conway.

    Round Lake Area Unit District 116 has approved its end of a lease for Joseph J. Pleviak Elementary School in Lake Villa, which was targeted for shutdown. District 116 Superintendent Constance Collins said the tentative 10-year agreement to rent Pleviak is the best option — financially and educationally — for her school system to upgrade kindergarten instruction.

    Federal officials say school districts' policy requiring an original birth certificate to register students for school discriminates against undocumented immigrants. Many suburban districts are now scrambling to figure out how to verify the age of potential students. “We don't deny anybody an education or access to school. But it does present some difficulties and challenges as to verifying a child's real age,” a Palatine school official said.

It would be a 10-year deal.
