Noting a lack of recidivism and other behavioral improvements, the organizers of Round Lake Middle School's peer court are calling the three-month-old program a success. The eighth-graders who've served as jurors in the program — an alternative to suspension or other disciplinary measures for students who qualify — say they are proud. “It's a great way to give kids a second chance and not have (an infraction) on their record,” peer juror Brett Herdman said.

Experience was the lesson voters taught Tuesday as incumbents swept the election race for the Round Lake Area Unit District 116 school board. With all 18 precincts reporting, board members Ann Welk, Kevin Daniels and Margaret “Peg” Larson won three, 4-year seats with 739, 712 and 699 votes, according to unofficial tallies. Challengers Gema Mariscal and Kevin Devera garnered 519 and 487 votes, respectively.

A former Round Lake High School teacher pleaded guilty Tuesday to being in possession of drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop, a Lake County prosecutor said. Gina Epps, 39, a former physical education teacher from Round Lake Area Unit District 116, was sentenced to one year of supervision by Judge David Brodsky, Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Tyler Dyson said.

A veteran Round Lake High School physical education teacher who claims to be a marijuana activist is due in court next month on drug-related and other charges, authorities said. Round Lake Police Chief Michael Gillette said the instructor, Gina Epps, was on her lunch break Jan. 29 when she was pulled over on a traffic stop. “She's a marijuana activist,” Gillette said. “That's what she told the officer.”
