Jason Hanenberger of Round Lake rode the mechanical bull for over a minute before losing his grip. “Once the spinning starts, it’s hard to keep focus," Hanenberger said.

    Dances from The Barefoot Hawaiian of Des Plaines performed Polynesian and Tahitian dances on the main stage at the Cultural and Civic Center Friday during the first day of the Round Lake Beach BeachFest. About 20 children, including Chloe Fox, 5, of Libertyville, danced in front of stage for the one-hour show. “I love all types of dancing, because I want to be a ballerina and princess when I grow up,” Chloe said.

    A Waukegan man pleaded guilty but mentally ill to charges he stabbed and killed one man and wounded another during a bizarre car trip through Gurnee in 2011. Zervont Thomas, 21, was sentenced to 25 years in prison and will receive mental health care while incarcerated.
