  • Rosary routs Aurora Central Oct 30, 2014 9:36 PM
There was far more at stake when the neighborhood rivals met in a girls volleyball match for the second time this month. But the postseason proved no different than their regular-season date as host Rosary never trailed in administering a straight-sets defeat against Aurora Central Catholic Thursday evening. Behind the serving prowess of Martha Konvodoff and the fearsome hitting of Erin Burke, the Royals dominated their Class 3A regional final in Aurora with a 25-10, 25-8 victory.

  • St. Francis sweeps Rosary for 30th win Oct 22, 2014 9:38 PM
It takes a lot to impress Peg Kopec, and her St. Francis volleyball program did just that Wednesday night in Aurora. With a 25-15, 25-15 win over Rosary, the Spartans won their 30th game. And that’s not the impressive part, at least not the most impressive part.

  • UEC bragging rights on line Saturday Oct 15, 2014 1:53 PM
It’s getting to be the fun time of the cross country season — something the Batavia Bulldogs remember quite well. The Bulldogs certainly had fun late last year, qualifying for state for the first time and giving retiring coach Mike DiDomenico quite a send off. We’re still a couple weeks away from the key sectional races, but the postseason does get going this weekend with area teams hungry for bragging rights at their respective conference meets.

  • Rosary beats Aurora Central in straight sets Oct 14, 2014 10:00 PM
The atmosphere did not suggest a nonconference girls volleyball match on a school night. “It still feels like conference to me,” Rosary coach Rachel Hartmann said after Rosary turned back longtime league and neighborhood rival Aurora Central Catholic in straight sets Tuesday evening on the Royals’ home court in Aurora.

  • Benet wins Mizuno to remain undefeated Oct 11, 2014 7:47 PM
Benet Academy’s girls volleyball team put the finishing touch on a successful week by capturing the Gold Division championship at Saturday’s St. Charles East Mizuno Cup in Aurora. Led by Most Valuable Player Rachael Fara and all-tournament teammates Tiffany Clark and Dana Griffin, the Redwings (27-0) defeated defending tourney champion Plainfield North 25-19, 14-25, 25-18 in the championship match.

  • Neuqua Valley races to Stampede crown Oct 11, 2014 3:24 PM
For much of the West Aurora Stampede Saturday at Stuart Sports Complex in Aurora, Streamwood senior Gabby Juarez looked around and didn’t see anyone in sight. That was both a good thing — Juarez won the 14-team invite in 17:32, 17 seconds ahead of runner-up Emily Martin from Rosary — and a bit of a letdown that the competition she was hoping would push her did not race.

  • Halfway home, breaking down playoff possibilities Sep 30, 2014 9:42 AM
It seems like I say this every year about this time — and here I go again. I can’t believe how fast time is flying. Last weekend (at halftime to be precise) marked the official halfway point of the high school football regular season.

  • Tired Rosary wins own invitational Sep 27, 2014 6:49 PM
Not for the first time, Rosary’s girls swim team entered the pool for its annual invitational slightly weary in its legs. Rosary hosts an annual 10k walkathon to support the school, and the event took place Friday, the afternoon before the Beads’ Saturday morning meet. The same situation occurred in 2013, and Rosary won the swim meet — and that was the same Saturday, when the Beads finished 389-270 winners over Naperville North in a five-team invitational.

  • Rosary’s energy holds off St. Edward Sep 23, 2014 9:55 PM
Three-game volleyball matches often come down to which team has the most energy in the third game. On Tuesday night in Elgin, that team was Rosary. The Royals turned up the jets in Game 3 and dominated St. Edward to come away with a 25-15, 24-26, 25-16 nonconference win in a battle of former Suburban Christian Conference rivals.

The former business manager for Rosary High School in Aurora was sentenced to four years probation Friday for stealing at least $45,000 from the school.

  • Rosary regroups, beats IC Catholic Prep Sep 15, 2014 10:14 PM
Struggling down the stretch of a Game 1 loss to IC Catholic Prep, Rosary’s volleyball team needed to regroup. The Royals (5-6) did just that, pulling away for a Game 2 victory before pulling out the decisive third game during Monday night’s 15-25, 25-17, 25-19 triumph over the defending Class 2A state champions at the Kunold Athletic Center in Aurora.

  • Rosary defeats Kaneland on tiebreaker Sep 15, 2014 9:47 PM
Rosary had dropped its fair share of close tennis matches this fall. But the Royals were on the opposite side Monday afternoon at Marmion High School in Aurora as Rosary escaped Kaneland on the tiebreaker (total games won) at 79-60 after the schools’ nonconference girls tennis dual ended in a 4-4 deadlock.

  • St. Charles East outlasts Rosary Sep 8, 2014 10:24 PM
Kyla Augustine had had enough drama for one night. “Basically, I just didn’t want to go to three (sets),” the St. Charles East senior said. Monday night in Aurora, the Saints’ girls volleyball team rallied twice from 6-point first- and second-game deficits against Rosary. But the Royals were equally resilient, twice forcing overtime.

Coming off a history-making season, Geneva’s girls volleyball team looks poised to make even more. The Vikings got their 2014 campaign season started on the right foot Tuesday night in front of their home fans and new coach Annie Seitelman, defeating Rosary 25-18, 25-21.

  • Cougars enjoying remarkable turnaround Aug 25, 2014 7:17 PM
Before I begin looking ahead to the upcoming high school football season — which kicks off Friday night at a prep stadium near you — I want to take one last look back at the summer of 2014.
