Streak-busters Rosary claim SCC title May 11, 2013 12:00 AM
As she got ready to take the field Saturday, Rosary keeper Lauren Frasca reminded the officials that she had things to do in the afternoon the intimation being that she didn't want to be there for long. And yet Frasca and her teammates spent the maximum amount of time on their home field for the conclusion of the May 3 contest stopped by thunderstorms with 32:17 left in the second half. Originally played at Glenbard South, Saturday's finale took place at Rosary though the Royals played in Blue and were the road team, as they were in the original portion of the match. And when the match ended after a scoreless completion to the second half, two scoreless overtimes and a penalty kick shootout — it was 1-0 to Rosary (15-3-3, 9-0), earning the team its first conference title since 2007.

One of the most successful regular seasons in area girls soccer came to a close Saturday when Rosary defeated St. Francis to win the Suburban Christian Conference title. Now all eyes move to the postseason. In the Class 3A tournament, St. Charles North, St. Charles East and Batavia grabbed the top three seeds in the Hoffman Estates sectional.

St. Charles East turns table on West Aurora May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
The St. Charles East girls track team watched helplessly two weeks as West Aurora garnered its fourth consecutive Kane County championship by more than 30 points. But the Saints more than returned the favor Thursday night at the Blackhawks' Class 3A sectional, winning all four relays and qualifying nine individuals to deny West Aurora its third postseason crown in the last four years.

Rosary, St. Francis can’t settle SCC yet May 2, 2013 12:00 AM
It wasn't that Rosary and St. Francis didn't try to get Thursday's key Suburban Christian Conference match played. In fact the Royals and Spartans tried mightily to get their match at Glenbard South finished. But thunder and lightning and the prospect that those conditions would not relent eventually led to the match being stopped after two lengthy delays — though nearly 50 minutes of scoreless game play was finished before the match was finally stopped with 32:17 left in the second half.

Rosary rides its depth to win SCC May 1, 2013 12:00 AM
At a girls track and field invitational, the four relays are worth their weight in gold. Rosary came away with a mini-version of Fort Knox Wednesday at home, scoring 38 out of a possible 40 points with three victories and a runner-up result. The Royals' relay dominance, bolstered by consistency in the other 14 events, enabled the squad to capture their first Suburban Christian Conference title in three years with 146.5 points in Aurora.

FieldTurf making East Side Complex a popular place Apr 30, 2013 12:00 AM
There are a number of advantages in being a resident of St. Charles. Both of the city's high schools — St. Charles North (21st) and St. Charles East (39th) — were recently named to the "Top 50" annual list published by U.S. News & World Report that ranks each state's high schools. They were the only 2 Kane County high schools to make the list. Both high schools were also recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools by the U.S. Department of Education.

Rosary falls in semifinals of own tournament Apr 27, 2013 12:00 AM
In a spring that's been highlighted by cold, damp weather, Rosary's girls soccer invitational took place Saturday on the warmest playing date of the season. That's great for people looking to work on a sun tan, not so good for players enduring a long day of running, tackling and shooting. The Royals advanced to the semifinals before being eliminated in their own tournament, which was eventually won by Plainfield South, 1-0 victors over Willows in the title game. In a tournament where the format is that all matches consist of 20-minute halves, Rosary (10-3-3) raced through its pool play. The Royals defeated Joliet West 3-0, tied Plainfield South 0-0 and defeated Joliet Catholic 1-0. A number of the Royals were then excused to prepare for the Marmion Academy Salute to Youth Dinner Dance.

West Aurora wins 4th straight Kane County title Apr 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Emma Spagnola was back in her normal routine. The West Aurora returning all-state performer in three events captured her specialty disciplines in one-sided fashions to lead the Blackhawks to their fourth consecutive Kane County Girls Track and Field Invitational Friday night in Geneva. West Aurora, which also received wins from sprinter Anita Saffa, thrower Maya Marion and its 400-meter relay team, scored 131 points to outdistance St. Charles East (100.5). Kaneland was third, followed by Hampshire, Geneva, Batavia, St. Charles North, Rosary, Burlington Central, Aurora Central Catholic, Dundee-Crown, Streamwood, South Elgin, Elgin, Larkin and East Aurora.

Expected to be good, Batavia baseball, Saints softball better than advertised Apr 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Prior to the start of the high school — I can't wait until it actually starts feeling like — spring season, two local teams were included among the annual preview stories. Nothing fancy, nothing new. Overlooked by some, Batavia's baseball team began its season last month with a game that wasn't even listed on its original schedule.

Rosary roars to West Aurora title Apr 10, 2013 12:00 AM
On one of the chillier midseason evenings in recent memory, Rosary broke the ice in Wednesday’s girls soccer match with West Aurora in emphatic fashion. The Royals, needing to win in order to claim the West Aurora Invitational title, scored twice in the opening seven minutes, were never tied and roared to a 6-2 victory. “We were passing the ball really well those first 10 minutes or so,” Rosary coach Kristy Kane said. “That was really nice to see. I think it was probably our best 10 minutes of soccer this year.”

Kroll, Kossakowski HRs lift St. Edward Apr 6, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Edward senior Kali Kossakowski has never needed a GPS to find her way around the bases after hitting a home run. Her Green Wave classmate Kristi Kroll, on the other hand, had never seen a softball leave her bat and end up on the other side of an outfield fence. Until Saturday that is. Kossakowski's solo shot over the center field fence proved to be the game-winning run as St. Edward came from behind to beat Rosary 4-3 in Suburban Christian Conference action at the Elgin Sports Complex. It came in the fifth inning, after Kroll had given the Green Wave a 3-2 lead with a 3-run shot over the right field fence in the bottom of the fourth. It was the first high school home run for Kroll, a three-year varsity player.

West Aurora tops Rosary to snap skid Apr 4, 2013 12:00 AM
Kaylee Hayton was two pitches away from perfection Thursday afternoon at Rosary. The West Aurora right-hander fanned 13 batters while walking none in a dominant 1-hit victory over the Royals in the schools' annual softball non-conference game. With their 6-0 triumph the Blackhawks (1-6) ended their six-game season-opening losing streak; Rosary dropped to 1-2.

Rosary tips Wheaton Academy in closing seconds Apr 3, 2013 12:00 AM
There weren't many scoring chances in Tuesday's Rosary-Wheaton Academy girls soccer contest — but those chances turned into dramatic goals which added exclamation points at pivotal moments of the match. Rosary won 2-1 when the last of those critical opportunities — an opportunistic shot from the top of the penalty area by Royals freshman Anna Sheen soared into the upper left corner of the Warriors goal. The goal was the first of Sheen's four-match varsity career.
