  • Chris Rongey: Manto firing unfair but expected Sep 29, 2013 11:38 PM
Though Chris Rongey is not convinced the White Sox’ poor hitting this year is on fired coach Jeff Manto, knowing how baseball is he's not surprised it happened. Yet, in reality, Manto — or any hitting coach — isn’t responsible for an aging Paul Konerko’s poor performance, by Konerko standards. Nor is he responsible for a perennial home run-hitting team not hitting home runs. And he’s certainly not responsible for the awful defense.

  • Nobody knows, so it’s time to give Konerko proper send-off Sep 23, 2013 5:30 AM
Paul Konerko has yet to say whether he considers this to be it for his career, and he says he will wait until the off-season to decide. All we can really do is assume the next five home games will be his last here in Chicago. So it's time to give him the send-off he deserves.

  • Rongey: Pitching numbers can be so deceiving Sep 10, 2013 8:18 AM
What's intriguing about Monday night's matchup between the White Sox' Chris Sale and the Detroit Tigers' Max Scherzer is that it provides a startling contrast to what the two pitchers have been able to enjoy this year.

  • Rongey: White Sox already have head start on 2014 Sep 2, 2013 8:00 AM
While we don’t know precisely how long it will take for the White Sox to get better, it is apparent based on recent comments by general manager Rick Hahn that there doesn’t seem to be much intent to concede next season for the sake of doing that. But do they really even have to make that point? Chris Rongey is not so sure they do.

  • Big weekend for Sox’ Phegley as Flowers flounders Aug 26, 2013 5:49 AM
In being asked to assess the current state of White Sox affairs, A.J. Pierzynski said over the weekend that Tyler Flowers might have better benefited from playing in front of a veteran catcher as opposed to Hector Gimenez, who had only appeared in 11 major-league games prior to this season.

  • Dunn far from problem for White Sox Aug 18, 2013 9:53 PM
Adam Dunn is — believe it or not — actually is having a decent season While subpar for his career standards, Dunn still is producing better than anyone else on the White Sox roster.

  • Talking White Sox trades and Konerko's future Aug 12, 2013 5:58 AM
Chris Rongey discusses the recent flurry of White Sox trades and ponders the future of one of the franchise's all-time best hitters, Paul Konerko.

  • There are still good reasons to watch White Sox Aug 4, 2013 9:50 PM
With the nonwaiver trade deadline passed, Jake Peavy, Jesse Crain and Matt Thornton gone, and the possibility Alex Rios is dealt before the end of this month, the most important thing the White Sox now can do is move forward.

  • Tensions high in Sox clubhouse as trade deadline approaches Jul 28, 2013 5:49 PM
Well, this is pretty much it. Whatever changes the White Sox are going to make will happen in the coming hours and days. Yes, the Sox could still make trades after this week’s deadline, but the bulk of anything they do will happen now. In fact, something may have already gone down by the time you finish reading this.

  • Chris Rongey: White Sox just might keep rotation intact Jul 22, 2013 5:54 AM
In the past, certainly, Chris Rongey and all others who closely follow the White Sox have wondered about deadline deals, and this year they do the same. The difference is that now they are left to speculate as to where some of the team’s best players are heading.

  • Former Sox pitcher Thornton did not deserve the venom hurled his way Jul 15, 2013 5:25 AM
Anyone with a crumb of knowledge will admit that Matt Thornton enjoyed some excellent seasons on the South Side and, at times, was absolutely dominant. He was particularly outstanding from 2008-10, and though his performance declined the last few seasons, he was still, at minimum, a serviceable reliever. But even the word “serviceable” undermines what he did while he was here.

  • Rongey: Sale, Crain all-star nods well-deserved Jul 8, 2013 5:30 AM
Though he isn't getting any run support at all, it isn’t all terrible news for White Sox starter Chris Sale as he’s receiving some much-deserved recognition for his work with a second straight all-star nod.

  • Chris Rongey: Sale shows won-loss record means little Jul 1, 2013 4:59 PM
To see a standard for the win-loss record of a pitcher meaning very little, take a look at what White Sox starter Chris Sale has done this season. Through Sunday, he's 5-7 despite the fact that he has an ERA near the top 10 of all pitchers who have started games in the American League this season.

  • Let’s hear it at least for Crain, Reed Jun 23, 2013 11:25 PM
I’ve wasted too much space over the last few weeks on the negative. These days there really aren’t many different ways to describe the White Sox’ struggles over the last month. We’ve covered most of it. Can’t hit, can’t catch, our pets’ heads are falling off. Blah, and more blah. Today, I’m focusing on a couple of positive things, because I can. And because you could use the break.

  • Sox shouldn’t trade just to trade Jun 19, 2013 12:31 AM
The White Sox are running out of time. And I don’t just mean time to get back in a division race, I mean time to remain a roster as currently constructed. That time is evaporating. As I’ve said before, I still think this team will remain basically as is by the time we get to September. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t witness the departure of a player or two that could boost a team preordained for a playoff run, and the White Sox have a few of those.

  • White Sox ‘blowing it up’ not a likely scenario Jun 9, 2013 11:01 PM
The White Sox have played worse than what I believe them to be. That’s not to say the Sox are a great club, because I don’t think that’s true. However, I do think they’re better than what they’ve shown. Unfortunately, they haven’t shown us better — and the 60-game mark of the season has been surpassed. Therefore, what you want to know is: Are they going to blow it up and start over? This is a question that’s been asked repeatedly, and I’m fairly confident it won’t go away.

  • Blaming Blackhawks for Sox’ struggles preposterous Jun 2, 2013 11:58 PM
Clearly, it’s all the Blackhawks’ fault. Yep. They’re in the midst of an exhilarating Stanley Cup playoff run, the city of Chicago is transfixed — and that includes White Sox players. As a result, this South Side ballclub is far too focused on the ice and not on the diamond. At least that’s what I was told this week.

  • Chris Rongey: Sox fans do make things interesting May 26, 2013 10:55 PM
A year ago Chris Rongey was still in favor of the six-game season series between the White Sox and the Cubs. Now that things have changed, he has to admit, this isn’t bad.

  • Chris Rongey: White Sox’ offense going to need Konerko May 20, 2013 5:30 AM
The White Sox are going to need Paul Konerko's offense. For better than a decade, Konerko has been the constant in the heart of the Sox' lineup.

  • Chris Rongey: Bad White Sox defense has to stop May 13, 2013 2:19 PM
The White Sox this year have always been — going back to February — a team that would have very little room for error if they wanted to truly compete. Unluckily, all we've seen this season is too many of those. Errors.
