    Can anyone challenge Hinsdale Central a month from now in the boys tennis state tournament? Not likely, based on the most recent evidence. The Red Devils rolled past 31 teams over the weekend to earn the team championship at the Tom Pitchford ‘32’ Invitational going away on Saturday. Hinsdale Central also likely will get Martin Joyce as the state tourney’s top seed, along with teammates Lope Adelakun and Chase Hamilton at doubles after victories at tournament host Hersey on Saturday. The Red Devils, who last year crushed the field with a perfect score of 80 overall points, nearly matched that record with 76 points, 26 points clear of runner-up Lake Forest and 28 more than third-place New Trier. Stevenson finished fourth in the team race with 44 points, while downstate Edwardsville rounded out the top five with 41 points.

Junior ace Julia Camardo (8-4) won her third straight game since returning from an injury as the Bison (10-8, 6-3) won 10-9 and took a half-game lead over Elk Grove (19-3, 5-3) in the Mid-Suburban East.

    Last week’s water polo games between Elk Grove and Rolling Meadows high schools drew a standing-room-only crowd — and yet it was hard to tell which fans were which. Fans and players alike were all were wearing the same T-shirt, which read: "Rivals united for a cause." For one day at least, the two teams — which share the Elk Grove High School pool — came together in support of the Lady Grenadiers’ 28-year old varsity coach, Alexa Rodheim, who is battling a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer.

    Fremd ended its curse Friday at the Mid-Suburban League boys gymnastics meet at Palatine on Friday. The Vikings had always found themselves on the short end at the conference meet, with several near misses at winning a league championship. “We have had some very good teams here,” Fremd coach Tim Hamman said. “But there is always a Conant, or Palatine or some other team that has a state-qualifying team.” Not this year, though, as Fremd proved to be the best of the bunch in winning its first MSL title with a score of 136.95. The Vikings are also MSL West Division champs.
