Julia Nemcek, Kathleen Beck and Dan Miller had comfortable leads late Tuesday in the race for four open seats on the River Trails Elementary District 26 school board. The winner of the final seat was too close to call, with Rathna Koka and Scott Breiler running neck-and-neck.

Northwest suburban schools on Illinois Honor RollJan 28, 2013 12:00 AM
The State Board of Education named 26 Northwest suburban elementary schools to the Illinois Honor Roll on Monday — half of them from one district alone. School districts receiving the honor included Wheeling Township District 21, Arlington Heights District 25, River Trails District 26, Schaumburg Township District 54, Mount Prospect District 57, Elk Grove Township District 59 and Des Plaines District 62. District 54 alone has 13 schools on the list.

Palatine Township Elementary District 15 officials are exploring the idea of exposing its junior high students to a curriculum more focused on science, technology, engineering and math. That is, if it can find the funding. Board President Tim Millar acknowledged the financial challenges, but said “$100,000 out of a $140 million budget, that doesn’t seem like a lot to push the kids ahead.”

Hersey hosts concert band festival Apr 8, 2011 12:00 AM
Marching bands and jazz ensembles have their competitions, but the concert bands — recognized as the backbone of a school’s music program — rarely perform outside their own auditorium. Musicians at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights changed that when they organized the Chicagoland Concert Band Invitational 11 years ago. This year’s event is 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the school, 1900 E. Thomas Ave. in Arlington Heights. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for students.
