How does the Arlington Heights Park District learn how much voters will spend for park improvements after the narrow defeat of a $48 million bond issue last week? Even outspoken opponents agreed the parks need work. Park district officials promised to explore actions that could range anywhere from maintaining current facilities, trying to renovate the parks one by one, or putting a question on the ballot again.

Though suburban residents voted largely in favor of Tuesdays electricity aggregation referendum, the process of translating that into customer savings wont be as quick or simple as flipping a switch. Officials in many suburbs are getting to work researching how to obtain the lower rates the majority of their residents asked them to find. But its likely to take until September for customers to notice a change on their bills.

Measures giving local officials power to negotiate for lower-priced electricity have passed in most of the nearly 300 Illinois towns where they were on the ballot, and residents and small businesses can expect the communities to move quickly to try to cut cheaper deals. Thats because the higher Ameren Illinois and ComEd rates that officials are betting they can beat are likely to drop over the next 15 months or so, according to the Citizens Utility Board, a consumer advocacy group.

Bartlett and Barrington Hills were the only holdouts in Cook Countys Northwest suburbs on a referendum allowing municipal leaders to negotiate with companies other than ComEd for their electricity supply. Voters approved the referendum in Arlington Heights, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Deer Park, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Park Ridge, Rolling Meadows, South Barrington and Wheeling.

Evanston voters supported the idea to dissolve Evanston Township by a nearly 2:1 ratio on Tuesday, in an advisory referendum. The city and the township have exactly the same boundaries, and city officials estimate $500,000 a year could be saved if the township were eliminated.

The Arlington Heights Park District now must regroup, and figure out how it can renovate four parks without the $48 million that voters denied them on Tuesday, said board president Maryfran Leno. Its disappointing, she said. But were very pleased with voter turnout. Theres evidence that the voters are pretty closely split in regard to being for or against it. We need to figure out what were going to do and regroup.

Voters across the Fox Valley largely supported municipal electric aggregation Tuesday, giving their governments the right to negotiate energy contracts in hopes of cheaper rates. With the majority of the vote counted, Aurora, Big Rock, Burlington, Campton Hills, Hoffman Estates, Maple Park, Montgomery and South Elgin will be able to try aggregation. Voters in Bartlett voted down the proposal, with those in unincorporated Kane County almost evenly split and the question too close to call.

Nearly all of the 17 DuPage County towns that voted on shared electrical service want a change, based on Tuesdays election results. Voters were asked whether they want electrical service from a vendor other than ComEd as part of a package deal through their village or city. Voters in 15 of those towns supported the measure.

West Chicago voters rejected a proposal to borrow $19.5 million in bonds to build a park district recreation center. With all 26 precincts reporting, roughly 53 percent of voters opposed the measure.
