  • Glenbard North shoots into sectional final Mar 13, 2014 12:03 AM
    Glenbard North’s boys basketball team answered a gut shot with a dagger. After Proviso East’s Kalin Fisher knocked down his eighth 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to tie the game, Jeremiah Fleming’s running 3-pointer put the Panthers ahead to stay at 77-74. The Pirates called timeout with 2.4 seconds left, but Glenbard North’s Chip Flanigan stripped the ball from Fisher as he went up for another game-tying 3-pointer. The manic final half minute resulted in Glenbard North’s 77-74 victory over Proviso East in Wednesday’s Class 4A Bartlett sectional semifinals.

    Proviso East girls basketball coach Ezra PridGeon stressed the importance for his Pirates to play four quarters in every game, regardless of the opponent. “We must play hard every second and every minute of every quarter,” he said. Everything seemed to click for the Pirates on Thursday night in Northlake. With 6-foot senior forward Tia Barlow scoring 14 points and 6-0 junior forward Jasmine Levy reaching double figures with 11 points, Proviso East used a solid all-around effort to defeat the Eagles 69-22 in the West Suburban Gold match.

    With the clock running down in overtime, Ore Arogundade was right on time. The St. Viator senior standout banked home the game-winning 5-foot runner with three seconds left to give the Lions a dramatic 79-77 victory over Proviso East at the Mac Irvin Diabetes Classic at Larkin High School in Elgin.

    It was a case of too much Jabari Parker, Kendrick Nunn and Kendall Pollard for Proviso East to handle. The Pirates stayed close to Simeon in the first Class 4A boys basketball state semifinal on Friday at Carver Arena in Peoria, but ultimately Simeon's talented trio made the difference in a 68-56 victory. The Duke-bound Parker finished with a game-high 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Pollard had 15 points and Nunn had 14.

    The IHSA will be hoping this weekend's Class 3A and 4A boys basketball state tournaments are devoid of the controversy that has marred last Saturday's 2A title-game win by Harrisburg over Seton Academy. An opportunity for history to be made could bring some welcome attention back to the Peoria Civic Center when the big schools are finished late Saturday night. Simeon and Duke-bound star Jabari Parker are trying to match the state record of four straight titles set by Peoria Manual and Sergio McClain from 1994-97. But, as always, there are plenty of other intriguing storylines as we enter the sixth year of four-class basketball. So, let's get on with our sixth year of tourney predictions, starting with Class 4A.
