Hersey's Mark Balmes also advanced in the shot put and discus and Conant's Ben Bowers qualified in the high jump and 110 hurdles.

George Coll and Varun Parekh took a giant stride toward their intended destination in the boys tennis state tournament Thursday. The Barrington duo won their first three doubles matches on their home courts to stay alive in the front draw and gain a spot in the fourth round of championship bracket play Friday morning. The Mid-Suburban League champs will meet 3-4 seed New Trier (Alex Mang-Arthur Ozga) at 9 a.m. today in Buffalo Grove in what promises to be an entertaining and exciting second day of the 97th state series. Tournament favorites Hinsdale Central and New Trier lead the pack in the team race with 24 and 22 points, respectively, with Lake Forest a surprise at 22 points. Oak Park-River Forest (20) and Stevenson (17) are right there in the team race, too.

Lythberg, Prospect produce against Meadows May 22, 2012 12:00 AM
A 10-day rest did Prospect's Hanna Lythberg a lot of good — and was treacherous to Rolling Meadows. Lythberg, who'd stayed off the pitching mound in recent days due to turf toe, returned to the hill Tuesday and stymied the Mustangs. Prospect blanked host Rolling Meadows 3-0 and will meet Barrington in Saturday's Class 4A regional final.

That was one Reilly fast sectional at Fremd May 18, 2012 12:00 AM
The bragging rights in the Reilly household will likely switch to current Libertyville senior Shane Reilly. Going back the 1980's, Reilly's father Mike was a distance runner at Libertyville and had put up a best effort of 4:24 in the 1,600-meter run. Friday night at the Class 3A Fremd sectional, Reilly bested his dad with a sensational effort in the 1,600-meter run. Reilly ran fifth in a loaded mile field, but his 4:19.66 time was good enough for a trip to the state finals next weekend at Eastern Illinois University. Reilly now is the best of the Reillys. "I finally beat my dad's time," Reilly said. "I felt really good coming into the final lap and knew I had a good time in me tonight." Reilly's six-second PR was just one of many great efforts at the Fremd sectional. The host Vikings won the meet with 71 points to 68 for runner-up Stevenson.

Big finish favors Stevenson May 18, 2012 12:00 AM
After battling to a scoreless deadlock for 78 minutes and 36 seconds, it was only appropriate that host Stevenson would win its girls regional championship game in Hollywood fashion Friday night against Prospect. The No. 3-seeded Patriots and No. 6 Prospect had some good scoring chances in this defensive gem. But it was a header by sophomore Erin Bailey on a corner kick by Jenna Weiner with only 1:24 to play that carried Stevenson to an exciting 1-0 victory. Stevenson (15-5-1) advances to the Palatine sectional Tuesday at 7 p.m. while the Knights closed out their season with a 12-8-3 record.
