    The John Hersey High School Symphonic Band and the MacArthur Middle School Concert Band played their way to Honor Band titles at the Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival. "They continue to amaze me at what they can accomplish when they put their minds to it," said Scott Casagrande, Hersey director of bands.

    The School Wind Consortium Joint Action Renewable Energy Agency, which consists of Community Unit District 300, Keeneyville Elementary District 20 and Prospect Heights Elementary District 23, discusses the latest option for using wind as an energy source -- leasing wind turbines over buying them. "This enables school districts to reduce exposure to long-term energy prices over a 20-year period,” the group's consultant said.

    Hersey hosts concert band festival Apr 8, 2011 12:00 AM
    Marching bands and jazz ensembles have their competitions, but the concert bands — recognized as the backbone of a school’s music program — rarely perform outside their own auditorium. Musicians at Hersey High School in Arlington Heights changed that when they organized the Chicagoland Concert Band Invitational 11 years ago. This year’s event is 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the school, 1900 E. Thomas Ave. in Arlington Heights. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for students.

    Challenger James Bednar will join incumbents Carol Botwinski, David Hess and Mari-Lynn Peters on the Prospect Heights Elementary District 23 board, which will have to go without a proposed .35 percent increase in the school’s tax rate. Voters soundly defeated the increase by a vote of 1,106 against and 508 in favor, according to unofficial results released Tuesday night.
