St. Viator students raise $10,000 for Mercy Home May 26, 2012 12:00 AM
Students at St. Viator High School in Arlington Heights raised $10,000 in this year's Lenten Campaign, and chose to give it to the Mercy Home for Boys and Girls in Chicago. "Thank you. You change the lives of our children through your generosity," said the Rev. L. Scott Donohue, a 1972 graduate of St. Viator and current CEO of Mercy Home.

Flexibly, St. Viator advances May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
A bend-but-don't-break philosophy served the St. Viator girls soccer team well Friday night in the Class 2A Lakes sectional final. The top-seeded Lions' offense struck early against No. 2 Lake Forest, and the St. Viator defense held on in the end for an exciting 1-0 victory and a berth to the Barrington supersectional next Tuesday. St. Viator (14-8-4) will face Belvidere sectional champion Freeport at 5 p.m., while the Scouts closed out their season with a 16-5-2 record.

Barrington’s Scarbrough has reason to smile May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Barrington's AJ Scarbrough is usually smiling and he had a good reason for it during Friday's Class 3A state track prelims in Charleston. Scarbrough set a school-record in the triple jump and leads the field going into Saturday's finals. Hersey's Mark Balmes also advanced in the shot put and discus and Conant's Ben Bowers qualified in the high jump and 110 hurdles.

Northwest suburban police blotter May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Two balcony fires in Mount Prospect were blamed on cigarettes. At cigarette probably set a wooden balcony, vinyl siding and plastic chair on fire at an apartment on the 2300 block of Colony Drive around 1:30 p.m. May 16. Damage was estimated at $600. A lit cigarette may also have caused a balcony fire at an apartment on the 1700 block of Forest Cove Drive around 11:35 p.m. May 22. Damage was estimated at $2,000.

The John Hersey High School Symphonic Band and the MacArthur Middle School Concert Band played their way to Honor Band titles at the Illinois SuperState Concert Band Festival. "They continue to amaze me at what they can accomplish when they put their minds to it," said Scott Casagrande, Hersey director of bands.

Palatine maximizes upset opportunity of Hersey May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Palatine maximized its opportunity for a big inning and minimized the damage by Hersey in a Class 4A regional semifinal. Jarrod Juskiewicz and Nick Roy homered to back the solid pitching of Eric Scheuermann as the 14th-seeded Pirates upset fourth-seeded Mid-Suburban League champion Hersey 6-2.

Palatine scored first in Wednesday's semifinal of the Hoffman Estates Class 4A softball regional.But then Hersey finished with some big firsts.The No. 8-seeded Huskies won their first regional game in five seasons under coach Molly Freeman as junior Sarah Platt fired a 4-hitter for a 9-2 triump over the No. 9 Pirates.It also marked the first time under Freeman the Huskies were not in a regional play-in game to start the state tourney and first time they started the regional with a record of .500.

McElroy, St. Viator nearly perfect May 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Tim McElroy was near perfect and so were his St. Viator teammates with the bats. McElroy threw a no-hitter with only 1 walk and 12 strikeouts and the Lions had 25 hits to rout CICS-Northtown 20-0 in 5 innings in Wednesday's Class 3A Deerfield regional. Buffalo Grove also lost in 4A to Glenbrook North.
