  • Sherwood surpasses 1,000 in Prospect’s playoff win Feb 18, 2015 11:20 PM
When you watch Catherine Sherwood on the basketball floor, it seems like there are a thousand ways she can beat you to the basket. Appropriately enough on Wednesday night, she became the eighth player in Prospect girls basketball history to score 1,000 points. Needing just 1 point to reach the milestone, Sherwood did it by hitting the first of two free throws with 3:07 left in the first quarter. It also gave Prospect a 12-3 lead which was eventually extended to 31-3. The Mid-Suburban League East champs went on to post a 50-25 victory in the semifinal game of the Class 4A Grayslake North Class regional over the host school which was seeded 15th in the Palatine sectional.

Tulga Zuunbayan and Julius Smith shut the door on their wrestling opponents all weekend long, including late Saturday as the Mid-Suburban League pair closed out their rivals to celebrate Class 3A sectional championships when the action came to an end in the fieldhouse at Barrington. Zuunbayan allowed for the possibility of still bigger and better things ahead as the Wheeling junior delivered a dazzling six-minute effort in his 152-pound final against DJ Penick of Highland Park to earn his first sectional title. That netted Zuubayan a third consecutive trip downstate. Smith, meanwhile, won a memorable championship during the final home match of his career, sending the Broncos standout to Champaign for a second time.

  • Gold-medal efforts at Barrington Feb 14, 2015 9:00 PM
The wide array of sports being contested at Barrington High School on Saturday almost gave the campus the feel you’d find at a Olympic-style winter sports festival. Wrestling over here, basketball over there — and down this hallway, the Mid-Suburban League boys swimming and diving championships. And in the pool, the host Broncos ended up celebrating a successful defense of their MSL team title, emerging on top in a finish that was much more tightly grouped than usual. Barrington won with 233 points, followed closely by Fremd (218). Rolling Meadows (183) turned in its highest-ever finish in third place, with Palatine (169) taking a big jump up as well to fourth.

The Knights rode the hot hands of Alex Preissing, Tanner Strobel, Matt Wroblewski and James Ford into Saturday’s semifinals. The middle of the Wheeling lineup supplied support to captain Ricky Muro and freshman Mason Skloot as the Wildcats put four of their own into the front draw for the second round of action. The aforementioned group will compete in the 10:30 semifinals after the first round of wrestlebacks open the proceedings at 9 a.m.

  • Solka helps Prairie Ridge co-op win at Lake Park Feb 12, 2015 11:39 PM
Prairie Ridge co-op junior Maddie Solka wasn’t even supposed to compete on Thursday night at the Lake Park girls gymnastics sectional. Solka, a Cary-Grove student, had injured her back in practice early in the week and was listed as doubtful for Thursday. But Solka ended up saving the day for the Wolves. Prairie Ridge was down to three gymnasts for the final event, floor exercise. Solka stepped in and gutted out a clutch performance in taking 10th place with a 9.3, propelling the Wolves to their fourth consecutive sectional title with 149.25 points in Roselle. Without Solka, Prairie Ridge would have finished with 139.93 points and missed the state cut. Instead the Wolves joined Geneva, Lyons Township, and Glenbrook South as automatic qualifiers. Fremd (146.25), Barrington (144.275), and Prospect (144.075) finished 2-3-4 at Lake Park and join DeKalb/Sycamore as at-large team qualifiers to state.

  • Fremd in winning form once again Feb 11, 2015 11:58 PM
The most dominating program in Mid-Suburban League girls basketball history was pretty much dominant again in Wednesday’s 42nd edition of the title game. Despite a huge Prospect student body cheering on the Knights at the Jean Walker Field House in Mt. Prospect, the Fremd Vikings avoided the distraction and were focused from the start en route to a 52-32 triumph over the MSL East champs. Senior Haley Gorecki, playing in her fourth straight title game, poured in a game-high 25 points as Fremd (23-4) recorded a record 16th conference crown.

  • It’s Prospect, in a Classic Feb 7, 2015 7:45 PM
Hersey led Prospect for more than 27 of the 32 minutes on Saturday when the two girls basketballs teams played for the Mid-Suburban League East girls basketball championship. In fact, the Huskies led by as many as 12 points (25-13) with under three minutes to play in the first half. But the state-ranked Knights, never a team to panic, were not going to be denied the crown they’d been going after since a freshman by the name of Taylor Will joined the program in the fall 2011. Four years later, Prospect’s all-time leading scorer, Will, and the Knights celebrated their first East crown since 2004 while District 214 celebrated 100 years of education at the Arlington Heights branch of Robert Morris University. With Will scoring a game-high 18 points and her senior teammate Catherine Sherwood getting 13, the Knights rallied for a 47-44 victory over the Huskies at the Forest View Education Center.

  • Standout efforts from Stevenson, Barrington’s Tenyer Feb 7, 2015 7:51 PM
Stevenson senior Sam Szura, a competitor since her freshman season, called her four seasons of participation in varsity girls bowling “a real trip.” “We started at the bottom and worked our way up, that’s for sure,” said Szura. “That’s why I’m so ecstatic right now. I’m crying.” The tears that Szura and her teammates were shedding Saturday were tears of joy as the Patriots surprised by winning the Palatine Regional at Brunswick Zone in Deer Park. “We expected to advance,” said Szura, “but we never expected to win the regional. I was nervous all day — I’m kind of a worry-wart — but in the end we were able to pull through, and I’m thrilled that we did.” Stevenson’s pinfall of 5,515 was a whopping 120 pins better than second-place Hoffman Estates (5,358), and both teams will advance to Saturday’s sectional tourney hosted by Rolling Meadows. Schaumburg (5,308) and Lake Zurich (5,288) will also move on to the sectional meet to be held at Brunswick in Mount Prospect, while the magical season of Barrington sophomore Sarah Tenyer continued in earnest. Just a week after winning Mid-Suburban League honors, Tenyer won medalist bragging rights at Deer Park with a 6-game total of 1,302 pins, including games of 246 and 235.
