  • Hard-hitting Prospect advances May 21, 2013 12:00 AM
You always want the bats warming up late in the season. Prospect's were as hot as the weather in Monday's play-in game of the Buffalo Grove Class 4A softball regional at Wheeling. The No. 18-seeded Knights scored as many runs in one inning as they did in any game all season en route to a 16-5 victory over the No. 16 Wildcats. After giving up 5 runs and falling behind 5-2 after 5 innings, Prospect (9-19) erupted for 10 runs on 10 hits in the top of the sixth and never looked back to advance to today's 4:30 p.m. semifinal against top-seeded Barrington (30-1) at Buffalo Grove High School.

Kiser keys big opener for Lake Zurich May 20, 2013 12:00 AM
Tanner Kiser received a mini-celebratory dousing of small cups of water over his head from a couple of Lake Zurich baseball teammates late Monday afternoon. Maybe they wanted to make sure the left-handed hitting first baseman didn't cool off too much. Not after the only thing that may have prevented him from hitting for the cycle was not getting a fourth at-bat in the Class 4A Lake Zurich regional quarterfinal against Prospect. Kiser homered, tripled and doubled and drove in 5 runs and cleanup man Anthony Drago went 3-for-4 with a homer and 4 RBI as the 14th-seeded Bears (15-16) stayed hot and extended their winning streak to 5 games as they rolled 13-0 in 5 innings.

Silver linings for Palatine 3,200 relay, Meadows’ Keller May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Tess Wasowicz put her best foot forward — and didn't wince. In the end, all was well in a season that wasn't always well for the Palatine star. What the senior described as a "stress reaction" in her left foot kept her from competing on the track for half the season, but the perennial state qualifier left Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Stadium with a runner-up state medal draped over her neck after joining 3,200-meter relay teammates Kara Burton, Liz Cox and Cassidy McPherson ran strong on the season's final day, finishing second (9:12.21) in the Class 3A race behind only New Trier (9:04.86). Another state veteran, Rolling Meadows senior thrower Morgan Keller, also left Charleston happy. She finished in second place in the discus (149 feet, 7 inches).
