  • Girls swimming: Fremd finishes on top Nov 2, 2014 7:45 PM
Of the eight individual events contested in Saturday’s Mid-Suburban League girls swimming championships at Barrington, only one of them had a winner from Fremd. That was senior Saki Takumiya in the 100-yard butterfly. But this Fremd team is clearly more than the sum of its parts. The Vikings won the medley and 200 free relays, and no Fremd invidual entry finished lower than sixth place. That kind of consistency combined with a touch of misfortune for Barrington helped the Vikings claim the Mid-Suburban League title for a third straight year. Fremd finished with 305 points to Barrington’s 260.

  • McHenry’s Reiser edges Conant’s Dale Nov 1, 2014 3:24 PM
The Schaumburg Class 3A boys cross country sectional lived up to its hype, but also offered plenty of surprises. McHenry senior Jessie Reiser edged Conant senior Zach Dale for the individual title, while Hersey, McHenry, Barrington, Lake Zurich and Hoffman Estates earned team advancement to the state meet.

  • Liva leaves MSL meet with a record effort Oct 31, 2014 10:06 PM
According to both Prospect senior diver Dana Liva and her coach, Antonino Bondi, Liva’s performance in Friday’s Mid-Suburban League championship meet was far from perfect. The judges, at the very least, sure liked it a lot. Liva completed a four-year run of MSL championships with a meet and pool record score of 492.45 at Barrington High School.

  • Girls swimming: Scouting MSL swimming and diving Oct 30, 2014 7:30 PM
Here's what to expect from the Mid-Suburban League girls swimming and diving meet. The action is at Barrington, starting with diving at 6 p.m. Friday and swimming at 11 a.m. Saturday.

  • Prospect’s Liva smoothly dives toward postseason success Oct 29, 2014 2:35 PM
There’s a certain smooth symmetry to the high school diving career of Dana Liva. Measured against the state’s best competitors, she’s enjoyed parabolic success in her time competing for Prospect. Her state meet finishes have been 12th as a freshman, sixth as a sophomore and fourth as a junior. Plotted against her Mid-Suburban League competitors, the achievement curve has been predictable in a different way: a perfectly straight line of consecutive first-place finishes. When Liva competes starting at 6 p.m. Friday at Barrington in the MSL meet, she’ll gracefully be pursuing conference diving championship No. 4.

  • Prospect’s Karz warms to collegiate baseball future Oct 27, 2014 2:26 PM
Prospect senior Lucas Karz has already thought about his first winter in college. “I won’t need to shovel the driveway in the winter,” he said with a smile. Instead, he will probably be gripping a baseball bat during those months. That’s because Karz, thanks to his baseball skills, will be attending Presbyterian College in South Carolina.

  • Girls volleyball: Northwest roundup Oct 27, 2014 10:29 PM
No. 12-seeded Conant wasn’t on its home floor but still played in its own hometown to win its Class 4A girls volleyball play-in match on Monday night. The Cougars went across town to the Hoffman Estates regional and topped the No. 21 Hawks 25-10 25-20 for the third time this season. Conant will face No. 5 Lake Park in today’s 6:30 p.m. semifinal.

  • Girls cross country: Higuchi strong down the stretch for Fremd Oct 25, 2014 7:54 PM
Fremd senior Ayako Higuchi had the finishing touch on Saturday at the Hoffman Estates Class 3A regional. Just last week, Higuchi couldn’t quite find the extra gear down the home stretch, finishing second to Palatine junior Kelly O’Brien at the Mid-Suburban League meet. But the Vikings senior closed the door on Saturday, using one final burst in the final 20 meters to win the regional title in 18:08 to prevail after a stiff challenge from Prospect sophomore Brooke Wilson (18:10) on a sparkling fall morning at Busse Woods.

  • Winning trend continues for Hersey at Lake Park Oct 25, 2014 11:11 PM
Apparently one championship this week wasn’t enough for Hersey’s girls volleyball team. Just two days after winning the Mid-Suburban League title, the Huskies came back to win the championship of the Lake Park Invite in Roselle. The Huskies (30-5) defeated Oak Park-River Forest 25-14, 25-9 for their second title at Lake Park in three years.

  • Prospect finishes with 3rd straight win Oct 24, 2014 11:43 PM
When do the playoffs begin? The 2015 playoffs, that is. Prospect sure looks ready. The Knights concluded their 2014 campaign with a third straight win, this one a convincing 31-13 Mid-Suburban East victory at Elk Grove to finish 3-6 overall and 3-2 in the division. They can only wish it was 2015 already.

  • Boys golf: Barrington grabs third-place state finish Oct 18, 2014 7:27 PM
With all of its great young talent, the future of the Barrington boys golf team looks very bright. The present isn’t so bad either. Led by super sophomores Timothy Lim and Tom Calbi, the Broncos were able to take home hardware from Saturday’s Class 3A state tournament finals on a cold day at the “Den” course in Bloomington. Lim shot 73 at the meet’s final round to finish in a tie for sixth individually (at 6-over par for the two day meet), while Calbi carded a 74 on the final day to tie for 12th place individually with a 151 (7-over). The stellar showing of the sophs along with a 77 from junior Burke Barsamian helped Barrington claim the third-place team trophy.

  • Conant’s Dale, Hersey repeat as MSL champs Oct 18, 2014 5:20 PM
All eyes were fixed on Conant senior Zach Dale on Saturday at the Mid-Suburban League boys cross country meet, and the Cougar senior didn’t disappoint. Dale, who has a run conservative race schedule this season, showed no rust in running away with the victory in 14:58, earning himself a second consecutive MSL title at Busse Woods. “Maybe it wasn’t flashy,” said Conant coach John Powers of Dale’s victory. “But this was a matter of taking care of business, and he passed the eye test big-time.” Hersey also took care of business. The Huskies placed four runners in the top 12 in securing their second consecutive MSL title with 57 points, holding off a strong challenge from Buffalo Grove (63 points).

  • O’Brien, Palatine work through another MSL title Oct 18, 2014 4:55 PM
Palatine junior Kelly O’Brien made it look easy early, but she had to work hard late. On a cool and damp morning, O’Brien jumped out to a comfortable lead in the first mile in the Mid-Suburban League girls cross country conference meet on Saturday at Busse Woods. But Fremd senior Ayako Higuchi made her work in the final 2 miles. The two ran neck-and-neck in the final mile before O’Brien made a final surge with 20 meters remaining to secure the MSL title in 17:52 leading Palatine to its third consecutive MSL triumph with 40 points.

At Prospect, it’s starting to feel like old times. The Knights, young, inexperienced and injury-plagued, battled through all that Friday night. And for the second week in a row, Prospect put a damper on an opponent’s prospective playoff hopes with a 24-14 win over visiting Buffalo Grove.
