    Fremd used a 3-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a victory that gave them a 4-2 victory over Rolling Meadows on Tuesday and wrapped up a second-place finish for the Vikings in the MSL West. Marcus Middlebrook tied it up with an RBI double in the final inning, and Sam Beutler finished the game by hitting a walk-off 2-run homer.

     
  • Winning rehearsal for Buffalo Grove May 14, 2013 12:00 AM
    Buffalo Grove got one final tune-up on Tuesday for Thursday's Mid-Suburban League softball championship game.And the Bison got one final win in the Mid-Suburban League East, where they are champions for the first time since 1999. Trailing 2-1 going into the top of fifth inning, senior right fielder Kristina Dakas drove a one-out double to the right-center field fence to ignite a 2-run inning that gave the Bison the lead for good. BG added 4 more runs in the sixth to post a 7-2 victory behind sophomore ace Julia Camardo (14-7), who tossed a 5-hitter with 7 strikeouts.

    For the first time this century, Buffalo Grove will play for the Mid-Suburban League softball championship. Under third-year coach Jamie Paul, the Bison clinched the MSL East on Monday with a 6-5 victory over visiting Hersey.

    Elk Grove senior pitcher David Camacho completed a perfect run through his Mid-Suburban League opponents, tossing a complete-game 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts as the Grenadiers wrapped up regular-season league play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Conant on Monday. Camacho improved to 7-1 overall and finished 6-0 against MSL foes. He allowed 2 walks. Luc DiMaso did most of the damage offensively for Elk Grove (21-8, 12-4). He had 2 hits — a solo homer and a double — and scored both runs. Michael Anciulis also had 2 hits, including a double.

    It seemed like an eternity for John Roncone, but his tennis team from Barrington is back on top for the first time since 2010. The Broncos lifted the Mid-Suburban League championship trophy on a cold, windy Saturday afternoon at host Wheeling thanks to supremacy at doubles and steady work at singles, particularly from No. 3 champ Zach Hennenfent. Barrington outscored Fremd by 14 points, 61-47. Prospect took third with 34.

    Prospect wins sectional title May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    It was a bittersweet night for Prospect girls track and field coach Dave Wurster. The Knights were 17 points better than WW South, 99-72, in the York sectional Friday, but the sectional team championship did not compensate for several near misses. "The sectional meet is always an emotionally weird night for a coach," Wurster said. "You get really excited for a few minutes and then you have to move on. There are always two or three events that you just miss in (qualifying). (The girls) work so hard and then their season is over."

    Fremd’s talent rises to the top May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    The Fremd boys track and field team has a group of talented athletes from top to bottom. In Friday's Mid-Suburban League championship meet at Hoffman Estates, the Vikings showed just how deep a group they are. Despite finishing first in only two events, Fremd was still able to win the MSL title by edging Barrington, who finished second, by a score of 105-93.

     
  • Big rally lifts Schaumburg May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    Trailing 8-2 after five innings, Schaumburg's softball team scored 9 runs in the top of the sixth to pull out an 11-8 victory over visiting Conant in the Mid-Suburban League game. Senior Hannah Kerr (6-2) earned the win for the Saxons, who improved to 16-8 and 8-7.

     
  • Wu, Fremd chasing titles May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
    Fremd junior Angela Wu is in prime position for a run at the badminton singles championship, and the Vikings are also in the thick of the team state championship hunt after day one of the state tournament Friday in Charleston. Wu, a two-time Mid-Suburban League champion, rolled past all of her first three opponents in two games to earn a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals against Emma Adcock of Hinsdale South. Fremd was in second place in the team standings with 9.5 points, trailing Thornton Fractional South by 1.5 points and ahead of third-place Downers Grove North and Naperville Central by a half point.

    Fremd's softball team remained right on the heels of first-place Barrington with a 10-3 victory at Schaumburg. Senior ace Ashlynne Schwantz (17-3) won her 14th straight game with 1 strikeout and 1 walk as the Vikings improved to 13-1, 1 game behind Barrington in the competitive Mid-Suburban West. The game was tied at 3-3 after four innings when Fremd (18-6) scored 3 times in the fifth and added 4 more in the seventh.

  • Northwest suburban students earn Merit Scholar awards May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    Eleven Northwest suburban high school students have been chosen from among of 15,000 outstanding students nationwide for the prestigious Merit Scholar designation, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced. The 11 are among 2,500 scholars from across the country to earn the distinction, as well as a $2,500 scholarship, through the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

     
  • Barton, BG seniors enjoy big day May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    It was Senior Day for Buffalo Grove's softball team on Wednesday. Senior third baseman Erin Barton couldn't have begun the celebration of her own day any better. Barton belted a 3-run homer in the first inning and that proved plenty for sophomore ace Julia Camardo, who went on to shut out visiting Wheeling 5-0. Camardo (11-6) tossed a 1-hitter for the Bison (12-7) who improved to 8-4 in the Mid-Suburban East, two games in front of Elk Grove (7-7).

     
  • Roman, Prospect surprise Buffalo Grove May 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    Freshman Angela Roman collected more than half of visiting Prospect's RBI when the Knights stunned Mid-Suburban East softball leader Buffalo Grove 9-4 on Tuesday. Roman, who went 2-for-4 with 5 RBI, belted a two-out 3-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Knights a 9-1 lead. It was Roman's second homer of the season. She also hit one against Fremd last Saturday.

    After a defensive lapse played its part in a loss to Barrington on Friday, Palatine wanted to get back on track heading into a tough week of softball beginning Monday. The Pirates accomplished their goal with a 7-2 victory over visiting Wheeling on Saturday afternoon.
