    Prospect gymnast finds 'place that fits' despite challenges Feb 11, 2013 12:00 AM
    Jill Sevilla won't be competing for Prospect High School when the girls gymnastics state championships open Friday, but she's already a winner. Jill, who has Down syndrome, has been on the junior varsity team this season, and event competed in a match earlier in the year. “The girls that are less experienced pick an event to focus on, and Jill picked floor routine,” says her coach, Sara Koshelev. “We worked with her to improve her jumps and some tumbling passes.”

    Sarah Wille of Hoffman Estates and Katie Conrad of Palatine didn’t let the frenetic atmosphere of Cherry Bowl Lanes bother them in the least. As a matter of fact, the junior bowlers thrived in it. In the jam-packed setting of the Rockford alley — one that a fan rightly called “organized chaos” — Conrad and Wille showed their mettle by placing in the top 20 at Saturday’s state tournament.

    Make it 3 for Hersey’s Rollins, after 3 OTs Feb 9, 2013 12:00 AM
    Hunter Rollins put the finishing touches on a brilliant regular season before a packed house. With a brave effort during a gripping contest, Rollins struck late to seal his passage into next weekend’s Class 3A wrestling state tournament. In doing so, Rollins won his third straight sectional crown. He’s the first to do so since Barrington began hosting in 2009. The No. 3-rated Hersey senior outlasted No. 4 Kayne MacCallum (40-3) of Libertyville in the third OT period of the 160-pound final Saturday. Rollins, along with seven others from the Mid-Suburban League, earned their trips to the Assembly Hall in Champaign, where preliminary matches start Thursday.

  • Leyden recovers, finishes Day 1 in sixth Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    Last season Leyden found itself in sixth place at the state tournament after all was said and done. That’s the exact same position the Eagles are in this season after the first day at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford. Led by junior Reba Hall, ninth individually after six games of bowling in the books on Day 1, Leyden stands only 355 pins behind co-leaders Lockport and Rockford Jefferson. Hall, who took home the third place medal at state in 2012 while only a sophomore, rolled games of 257 and 244 Friday enroute to a series total of 1308.

    Prospect reclaims East title Feb 8, 2013 12:00 AM
    After a one year hiatus, the Mid-Suburban East belongs to Prospect once again. But it was far from easy. The Knights boys basketball team battled back from an 11-point first half deficit, overcame its leading scorer fouling out and got key contributions down the stretch from a pair of seniors on senior night to pull out a thrilling 70-68 double overtime victory over Elk Grove to wrap up its fifth East title in six years.

    Prospect aims for outright title; Schaumburg tries to turn back Fremd Feb 7, 2013 12:00 AM
    With two conference games remaining, Mid-Suburban League races are starting to take shape in both divisions. In the East, Elk Grove (11-12, 5-3) visits Prospect (14-9, 7-1) tonight in a rematch of a thrilling contest on Jan. 11 in which the Knights pulled out a 60-59 victory. While Prospect has already clinched a share of the East, a win for the Knights gives them the division outright and assures their spot in the Mid-Suburban title game on Feb. 20. In the West, Schaumburg (14-9, 6-2) hosts Fremd (16-7, 5-3) with the opportunity to lock up a share of their third straight West title. The Saxons won the first meeting in convincing fashion 46-35.

    Bob Nielson turned heads with the way he turned Minnesota-Duluth into a Div. II power, enough so that Western Illinois hired him as their head football coach Dec. 19. Now Nielson, who went 100-26 in his 10 seasons as head coach including two national championships, is turning heads in the Chicagoland area as seniors Devin O'Hara (Prospect), Colin Olson (Prospect) and Josh Baldus (Palatine) all signed national letters of intent on Wednesday morning to play for the Leathernecks next season.

     
  • Molini’s fine farewell lifts Prospect Feb 5, 2013 12:00 AM
    Playing her final game in the Jean Walker Field House, Michele Molini went out in style. The 5-foot-6 senior sharpshooter made four 3-point baskets in the final 16 minutes to help Prospect’s girls basketball team put away a 58-44 victory over Schaumburg in the Mid-Suburban League crossover. “I’m going to miss playing here,” said Molini (15 points), who joined sophomore teammates Taylor Will (18 points) and Catherine Sherwood (career-17 points) in double figures.

    On the most romantic day of the year, groups around the suburbs will rise up, speak out and dance as part of a worldwide effort to end violence against women. Says 71-year-old Mary Shesgreen, one of the organizers and a longtime member of Fox Valley Citizens for Peace and Justice: "Dancing feels wonderful. It feels liberating. It feels empowering. It's aesthetically expressive. Dance is a very strong and liberating force."

    Fremd was looking to bounce back after its regional meet, and sophomore duo Sydney Plichta and Christine Radochonski set the tone for the Vikings on Monday. Plichta opened by taking second on the beam (9.5), and Radochonski kept it flowing in the second rotation by taking third on the floor (9.55) in leading Fremd to second place at its own sectional with 146.225 points.

    Area standouts punch tickets to sectional meets Feb 2, 2013 12:00 AM
    New Trier captured the Fremd Class 3A regional championship on Saturday with 202 points five of the next six spots were held by Mid-Suburban League teams.Prospect (183) took second place followed by Hersey (120.5), Wheeling (114), Glenbrook South (97.50) and Fremd (70) and Rolling Meadows (68).

    It was fitting that Angie Kirchoff’s shooting touch gave Barrington the breathing room it needed needed to pick up a victory on Friday night.After all, it was Kirchoff’s sweet shooting in the third quarter that helped the Fillies girls basketball team erase a 6-point deficit. And her most important shots came in a pressure-packed situation at the foul line as her 2 free throws with eight seconds left turned a 1-point lead into a 41-38 victory over Conant in Mid-Suburban West action.
