Burke, Fisch lead Prospect at Highland Park May 18, 2013 12:00 AM
The Mid-Suburban League did well against perennial Central Suburban League and state powers Deerfield and Highland Park by advancing two at singles and another at doubles when play came to a close on the campus of the host Giants in boys tennis sectional action Saturday. Carson Burke and Ben Fisch of Prospect came out of the field to capture third- and fourth-place medals, respectively. Burke (18-9), a junior, earned his second consecutive trip to the state tournament. Fisch (20-9), an exchange student from Switzerland, makes his first state tourney voyage. Buffalo Grove's No. 1 team of Peter Georgiades and Anton Levitan (11-9) used back-to-back victories on Friday over teams from Hersey and Highland Park to qualify.

Meadows’ Keller, Prospect’s Santiago lead the way May 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Rolling Meadow senior Morgan Keller and Prospect junior Christina Santiago definitely set the tone at the Class 3A girls track and field state meet preliminaries at Eastern Illinois in Charleston on Friday. Keller, a five-time state medalist, took the early lead in discus by hitting the top mark in the preliminaries with a throw of 149-07, with two-time defending Class 3A champion Emmonnie Henderson of Edwardsville sitting in second (146-01). While Keller was throwing down the thunder, Santiago was lighting up the track for Prospect. She opened the day by helping Prospect secure the third-best time in the 3,200 relay (9:19.87) and followed up by hitting a school record and securing the third-best time in the 1,600 (4:55.72).

Kendziera, Costello sectional champs for Prospect May 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Prospect’s boys track and field team took third place in the Niles West sectional Thursday, sending the 4 x 800-meter relay to state along with several individuals. Knights senior Dave Kendziera won the 110-meter high hurdles (14.27) and the 300 intermediates (37.52), and senior Pat Costello won the shot put with a throw of 55 feet, just ahead of the 54-10 runner-up effort from Dominick DiBenedetto of Deerfield.

Palatine senior ace Megan Hedstrom threw a 4-hitter with 4 strikeouts as the Pirates edged host Prospect 3-2 in the Mid-Suburban League third-place crossover on Wednesday. Palatine (17-11) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jamie Haze (2-for-4, RBI) singled to score Lauren Logan. The Knights (8-19) tied the game in the bottom of the first when Rachel Trebswether led off with a triple to right center and scored on Michele Molini's one-out single to right.

Fremd used a 3-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a victory that gave them a 4-2 victory over Rolling Meadows on Tuesday and wrapped up a second-place finish for the Vikings in the MSL West. Marcus Middlebrook tied it up with an RBI double in the final inning, and Sam Beutler finished the game by hitting a walk-off 2-run homer.

Buffalo Grove got one final tune-up on Tuesday for Thursday's Mid-Suburban League softball championship game.And the Bison got one final win in the Mid-Suburban League East, where they are champions for the first time since 1999. Trailing 2-1 going into the top of fifth inning, senior right fielder Kristina Dakas drove a one-out double to the right-center field fence to ignite a 2-run inning that gave the Bison the lead for good. BG added 4 more runs in the sixth to post a 7-2 victory behind sophomore ace Julia Camardo (14-7), who tossed a 5-hitter with 7 strikeouts.

For the first time this century, Buffalo Grove will play for the Mid-Suburban League softball championship. Under third-year coach Jamie Paul, the Bison clinched the MSL East on Monday with a 6-5 victory over visiting Hersey.

Elk Grove senior pitcher David Camacho completed a perfect run through his Mid-Suburban League opponents, tossing a complete-game 4-hitter with 8 strikeouts as the Grenadiers wrapped up regular-season league play with a 2-0 victory over visiting Conant on Monday. Camacho improved to 7-1 overall and finished 6-0 against MSL foes. He allowed 2 walks. Luc DiMaso did most of the damage offensively for Elk Grove (21-8, 12-4). He had 2 hits — a solo homer and a double — and scored both runs. Michael Anciulis also had 2 hits, including a double.

It seemed like an eternity for John Roncone, but his tennis team from Barrington is back on top for the first time since 2010. The Broncos lifted the Mid-Suburban League championship trophy on a cold, windy Saturday afternoon at host Wheeling thanks to supremacy at doubles and steady work at singles, particularly from No. 3 champ Zach Hennenfent. Barrington outscored Fremd by 14 points, 61-47. Prospect took third with 34.

It was a bittersweet night for Prospect girls track and field coach Dave Wurster. The Knights were 17 points better than WW South, 99-72, in the York sectional Friday, but the sectional team championship did not compensate for several near misses. "The sectional meet is always an emotionally weird night for a coach," Wurster said. "You get really excited for a few minutes and then you have to move on. There are always two or three events that you just miss in (qualifying). (The girls) work so hard and then their season is over."

Fremd’s talent rises to the top May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
The Fremd boys track and field team has a group of talented athletes from top to bottom. In Friday's Mid-Suburban League championship meet at Hoffman Estates, the Vikings showed just how deep a group they are. Despite finishing first in only two events, Fremd was still able to win the MSL title by edging Barrington, who finished second, by a score of 105-93.

Big rally lifts Schaumburg May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
Trailing 8-2 after five innings, Schaumburg's softball team scored 9 runs in the top of the sixth to pull out an 11-8 victory over visiting Conant in the Mid-Suburban League game. Senior Hannah Kerr (6-2) earned the win for the Saxons, who improved to 16-8 and 8-7.

Wu, Fremd chasing titles May 10, 2013 12:00 AM
Fremd junior Angela Wu is in prime position for a run at the badminton singles championship, and the Vikings are also in the thick of the team state championship hunt after day one of the state tournament Friday in Charleston. Wu, a two-time Mid-Suburban League champion, rolled past all of her first three opponents in two games to earn a spot in Saturday's quarterfinals against Emma Adcock of Hinsdale South. Fremd was in second place in the team standings with 9.5 points, trailing Thornton Fractional South by 1.5 points and ahead of third-place Downers Grove North and Naperville Central by a half point.
