Can Ventura turn this Sox team around? Jun 18, 2013 12:00 AM
Mike North doesn't see much relief for Chicago White Sox fans in 2013. He thinks Rick Hahn just might be in deeper than he expected when he accepted the general manager job. And, North adds, maybe Robin Ventura doesn't have the type of personality to manage this particular team.

Stalberg’s speed replaces Bollig’s muscle in lineup Jun 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville went back to Viktor Stalberg’s speed over Brandon Bollig’s muscle for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Monday. Stalberg was back in the Hawks’ lineup after being a healthy scratch for the first two games while Quenneville went with the more physical Bollig.

Energy abounds at both United Center, TD Garden Jun 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Like the United Center, TD Garden can get very loud, which is what the Bruins were hoping to use to their advantage on Monday when the Stanley Cup Final changed venues. “There’s no doubt you’re a lot happier at home than you are on the road, right?” said Bruins coach Claude Julien.

Blackhawks beat up, and down, by Bruins Jun 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Time and time again, the Blackhawks have been tested, and every time they've had the answer. But with a couple of stars hurting, the Hawks are facing adversity again after losing 2-0 in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final, a game that wasn't as close as the score might suggest. “We didn't give them much,” said Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask, who faced 28 shots but few good scoring chances. “It was a very complete game by our side.”

Mike North video: Justin Rose, Winner by Default? Jun 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Mike North wasn’t impressed with the golf yesterday at Merion. Either no one seemed to want it enough or maybe this course is just too tough. All the top golfers, from Tiger Woods to Rory Mcllroy, looked like amateurs this past weekend at the U.S. Open

Don't feel sorry for MickelsonJun 17, 2013 12:00 AM
Phil Mickelson has accomplished something more remarkable than winning the U.S. Open: Finishing second six times. He calls Sunday's loss a heartbreak, but again it was self-inflicted. There is no valid explanation for a golfer like Mickelson being good enough to win the U.S. Open but never being good enough on U.S. Open week to do so.

Team wake-up call works wonders for Bruins Jun 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The Bruins looked like two different teams in Game 2 on Saturday — the one that let the Blackhawks do whatever they wanted to in the first period, then the one that dominated the second and third periods and most of overtime. “I don’t think there’s an explanation,” Boston defenseman Dennis Seidenberg said. “I think it was just us not being mentally ready. I wish we had one, so we won’t do it next game. Again, not being mentally ready is the only thing to think about. It happened, and we just have to be ready from the first minute in the next game.”

Hawks’ power play leaving a lot to be desired Jun 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The Blackhawks’ power play continues to come under some serious scrutiny. The Hawks are 0-for-6 in the first two games and lost momentum off the special team in Game 2, which they ultimately lost 2-1 in overtime. “I know that both sides, they’re looking for their power play to get some production because there’s not a lot of high-quality chances 5-on-5,” Hawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “But at the same time we’ve got to look to, you know, maybe simplify it and play anything at the net, the second and third opportunities around there.

Rask more than fills Thomas’ skates for Bruins Jun 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Boston coach Claude Julien admitted he didn’t know exactly what to expect when Tim Thomas, the Bruins’ 2011 Conn Smythe-winning goaltender, walked away from the game, leaving the starting gig to former backup, Tuukka Rask. As it turned out, there was nothing to worry about.

Murray: Hawks’ speed gives them an edge Jun 16, 2013 12:00 AM
Troy Murray says when it comes to OT, where the Blackhawks have an advantage is in their team speed and the ability to come at you with a great intensity and a great pace. "But when that pace starts to waver — whether it’s in an overtime or if fatigue starts to set in — then the game starts to slow down and in some ways I think that is an opportunity for Boston to execute their style a little more," he said.

Blackhawks, Bruins may be at this awhile Jun 16, 2013 12:00 AM
The Stanley Cup Final is tied at a game apiece, as it should be after each team won a game it probably should have lost. Just a reminder that the Blackhawks and Bruins seem destined to go the distance.

Whistle takes away Hawks goal in 1st Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Oh, what might have been. Leading 1-0 on Patrick Sharp’s goal midway through the first period and looking in full control against a Boston team clearly on its heels, the Blackhawks looked like they had just applied a mini-dagger to the Bruins.

Kane says Hawks need to overcome Game 3 blahs Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Patrick Kane knew heading into Game 2 Saturday night at the United Center just how crucial a victory over Boston would be for the Blackhawks. And not just because the Hawks would go up 2-0 in the Stanley Cup Final and retain home-ice advantage in the process, but because Kane realized how his team had played in Game 3s thus far this postseason. In a couple of words: not good.

Rask’s brilliance keeps Bruins close Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
If there were any “terrible” turnovers that Tuukka Rask observed through his goalie mask in the first period, he had no time to ponder them. Boston’s netminder was too busy stopping pucks. The Bruins were thankful for Rask that they trailed the Blackhawks only 1-0 after the opening 20 minutes in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final at the United Center on Saturday night.

Bruins remind Blackhawks this will be long series Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
The Blackhawks came out on fire in Game 2, but couldn’t sustain that pressure and the Bruins took it to them, tying the Stanley Cup Final by winning in overtime.

Fatigue setting in with another OT? Jun 15, 2013 12:00 AM
Eventually, even some of the best-conditioned athletes in the world succumb to exhaustion. Adrenaline plummets to “E.” Sweat-soaked hockey pads and gloves feel like sandbags on shoulders under a Sahara sun. After playing nearly three full overtimes in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, the Blackhawks and Bruins followed up by — what the heck — playing to a 1-1 draw in regulation time Saturday night at the United Center.

Just how did Crawford keep all those pucks out of the net? Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
As he has been throughout this playoff run, Corey Crawford was the straw that stirred the drink for the Blackhawks, stopping 51 of the 54 shots he faced, many in spectacular fashion, en route to his 13th playoff win and more important, a 1-0 series lead for the Hawks.
