  • Hadler helps Elk Grove edge Buffalo Grove Dec 20, 2014 12:42 AM
Dan Hadler finished with a game-high 21 points to help Elk Grove improve to 2-1 in Mid-Suburban East boys basketball after a 54-50 victory over visiting Buffalo Grove on Friday. Buffalo Grove led by 1 point entering the fourth quarter before being outscored 16-11. Senior Depin Patel finished with 9 points, all on 3-pointers, for the Grenadiers. Collin Calcagno paced the Bison with 15 points and Colin Dekorski finished with 13.

  • Football: Crabel steps down at Burlington Central Dec 19, 2014 6:14 PM
Rich Crabel knows how to push football players to bring out their best performance. Pushing pencils? That was his least favorite part of the job. Citing the ever-expanding administrative duties that come with being a head football coach at the high school level, Burlington Central’s coach submitted his letter of resignation during a meeting with athletic director Steve Diversey on Thursday. It took effect Friday.

  • Down the stretch, it’s Glenbard West Dec 20, 2014 12:46 AM
For a change, Glenbard West’s boys basketball team surged to a double-digit second-half lead on Friday. The key at that point was keeping it. The Hilltoppers did just that, holding off Downers Grove North in a 69-56 West Suburban Silver Conference victory in Glen Ellyn.

  • Bruising victory for Stevenson Dec 19, 2014 11:48 PM
A hustling Jalen Brunson ran into a brick wall — Caleb Reams, actually — fouled and tumbled, landing on his left shoulder. Stevenson’s star won’t lose many battles. Most high school basketball players, however, won’t fare well when crashing into Reams, Warren’s 6-foot-3, 240-pound University of Illinois football commit. “I’m just icing it. It’s a little sore,” Brunson said of his shoulder. “It’s got a little bruise on it. I kept trying to stretch it out (during the game). But I should be fine.” At game’s end, all was well for Stevenson and Brunson, too. Brunson, who didn’t miss any time on the court after his first-quarter collision with Reams, scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the fourth quarter, and Stevenson held off a furious rally by the visiting Blue Devils to win 50-41 Friday night.

  • Konkle, Metea Valley too much for South Elgin Dec 20, 2014 12:24 AM
Metea Valley center Mark Konkle expected to see South Elgin’s 6-foot 10 center Tyler Hankins crowding him around the glass in the Mustangs’ 83-51 Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division boys basketball blowout of the Storm in South Elgin Friday night. Instead, with Hankins in street clothes until the end of January due to injury and Konkle’s 6-foot-6 frame giving the senior a 4-inch height advantage against his defenders, the cup was free and the game plan was to get the ball inside to the 235-pounder and the rest would take care of itself.

  • Geneva gets back on track Dec 19, 2014 11:11 PM
Geneva coach Phil Ralston was still smarting a bit from watching his team give up 77 points in a loss to St. Charles East last weekend. The Vikings nearly blanked visiting Streamwood in the opening quarter on Friday night on the way to a 53-30 Upstate Eight River victory, making it at least a little easier for their coach to put last week in the rearview mirror.

  • Barrington stands tall against Fremd Dec 19, 2014 10:59 PM
As if Barrington’s height, rebounding and defensive prowess isn’t enough, wait until the Broncos, as coach Bryan Tucker puts it, “get a little better at valuing the basketball.” A little bit better shot selection, especially according to the situation, and having key ballhandlers stay out of foul trouble will help them be even more impressive than they already were in Friday night’s 65-57 Mid-Suburban West win at home over Fremd.

  • Toughness, finesse carry Prospect Dec 19, 2014 10:42 PM
Prospect used some on-court toughness and some finesse in beating Wheeling 48-40 at the the Jean Walker Field House in Mt. Prospect on Friday night. The Knights’ Grant Miller, whose nickname is Bulldog, provided the toughness. And sophomore Frankie Mack had the finesse in the Mid-Suburban East victory.

  • Conant closes out Hoffman Estates Dec 19, 2014 10:34 PM
Conant finally found a way to win a close one. The Cougars, who had heartbreaking losses to Fremd and Barrington, held off a late charge by host Hoffman Estates on Friday and topped the Hawks 60-55.

  • Hall of Famer now, Schalz still focused on helping kids Dec 18, 2014 5:54 PM
It says a lot about a person when you call him up and though he doesn’t know you from Adam leaves you laughing after an hourlong conversation. Above all the technique and drive he injects into the Rosary and Marmion swimming programs, that easy, agreeable nature must be what makes Bill Schalz one of the state’s most successful high school coaches, any sport.
