    Geneva’s girls basketball team loses so rarely at home that there’s truth to the cliché that it’s going to take a career night to beat them. St. Charles East did just that Saturday in the Mack Olson gym, getting not one but two career games to stun the Vikings 66-54, handing Geneva (16-6, 10-1) its first loss in the Upstate Eight Conference River Division.

    Schaumburg senior Jada Blackwell scored 9 of her team-high 13 points in overtime as the Saxons pulled out a 40-37 girls basketball victory over visiting Palatine in Mid-Suburban West play on Friday. Blackwell had a big 3-pointer in the extra session along with 4 free throws and a basket while classmate Brittany Reinhart also made a free throw as the hosts outscored the Pirates 10-7 in the extra four minutes.

    The Crystal Lake South boys basketball team was back in an all too familiar scenario early in the fourth quarter Friday against rival Cary-Grove, watching another lead slip away. But instead of reliving its own version of Groundhog Day, senior Matt Schingel personally made sure the Gators sealed the deal this time around. Schingel gated the Trojans’ second-half surge when he nailed South’s second 3-pointer of the game from the right corner with 5:30 remaining, which helped the Gators take a 38-27 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win at The Swamp.

Grant avenged an earlier loss to visiting Round Lake and got its second victory of the season with a 61-43 victory on Friday night in a North Suburban Prairie Division boys basketball game in Fox Lake. Justin Hanlin led the Bulldogs with 18 points and 6 rebounds, Jason Mobley chipped in with 16 and Jason Kaye added 10 points.

    Getting off to a good start on both end of the floor is usually key to winning any basketball game. Larkin’s girls did that at Chesbrough Field House Friday night and cruised to a 53-23 Upstate Eight Conference River Division win over city rival Elgin.

It figured to be a close game the rest of the way with either team having a chance to win. It didn’t happen that way. The visiting Whip-Purs connected on only 1 field goal down the stretch and were outscored by the Wolves 20-4. PR’s strong finish produced a 64-50 win in Fox Valley Conference Fox Division boys basketball action in Crystal Lake Friday night.

    A lot of work in a short amount of time Friday night allowed Dundee-Crown to celebrate the benefits of all the time and effort it spent this week on a new play for Caleb Parson. A 3-pointer by Parson from the top of the key with two seconds to play wiped out a 10-point deficit in the final six minutes and gave the Chargers a 41-40 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division boys basketball victory at McHenry’s West Campus.

But Christian Liberty hit five 3s in the second half and also made 9 for 13 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull out a 55-51 victory.
