  • State fishing tournament rescheduled May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
    The Illinois high school bass fishing state tournament has been rescheduled after dangerous water levels on Carlyle Lake forced it to be postponed. The Illinois High School Association said Thursday that the competition will be May 31 to June 1. The tournament was to be May 3-4 on the lake in southern Illinois.

The 36th annual awards were presented by the Chicago Headline Club at the Union League Club in Chicago.

    About 350 of the suburbs' top high school athletes and their families filled the Sears Centre Arena on Sunday for the Daily Herald Prep Sports Excellence banquet. The first-time event celebrated the prowess, dedication and determination of the athetes. Featured speaker Jarrett Payton encouraged the students to seek greatness and serve their communities.

    The attorney representing the families of four Maine West High School students who say they were hazing victims is upset over Maine Township High School District 207's decision to represent the soccer coach who is in the middle of that scandal. Former head soccer coach Michael Divincenzo has agreed to a drop an appeal of his dismissal in return for the district hiring an attorney to represent him in the lawsuit, district officials said.

    Longtime Northwest suburban basketball referee Bill Spicer, who battled a rare form of leukemia for nearly a year, succumbed to the disease Sunday. He was 59. Spicer was involved with youth athletics for more than 20 years in the Northwest suburbs. He was active with the Arlington Heights Youth Athletic Association, serving as its president since 1989.

    As top college basketball teams battled in March Madness matchups throughout the day Saturday, a tournament featuring 30 coed teams from Chicago area alternative schools focused more on sportsmanship than the final score. "Sportsmanship is what we're all about," said Sarah Lorenzi, chairwoman of the Chicago Area Alternative Education League's fundraising committee. "The biggest trophy is the sportsmanship award."

"The game is for the kids, the game is not for the referees."

    Citing personal reasons, Maine West High School's athletic director, Christopher Addante, has resigned and will step down from the post at the end of the school year. Addante's departure is not connected to the recent hazing scandal at the school that led to the firing of two soccer coaches, Maine Township High School District 207 spokesman Dave Beery said.
