American Legion tourney opens in Carol Stream Jun 14, 2013 12:00 AM
Twelve baseball teams from the across the Midwest are in Carol Stream this weekend for the sixth annual Summer Classic Tournament hosted by American Legion Post 76. The three-day tournament kicked off Friday morning at the newly renovated Lee Pfund Field, 570 S. Gary Ave., following ceremonial first pitches by Carol Stream Village President Frank Saverino and his 7-year-old grandson, Dominic.

Former Maine West coach appears in court on hazing charge Jun 3, 2013 12:00 AM
Former Maine West High School head varsity soccer coach Michael Divincenzo made his initial court appearance Monday on charges of hazing, battery and failure to report abuse. Though Divincenzo, 37, of Elk Grove Village did not speak at his hearing, his attorney Thomas Breen, later said, “You're gonna find out he's a very good coach, a very good person. He had nothing to do with whatever might have occurred way beyond his observation.”

Palatine-Schaumburg District 211 plans to renovate pools at all five of the district's high schools, but parents and coaches say they have needed improvement for over a decade now because of their unusual design. "We weren't practicing starts the way you're supposed to do them, which then takes away a lot of your training," said Joey Arce, coach at Hoffman Estates High School.

State fishing tournament rescheduled May 9, 2013 12:00 AM
The Illinois high school bass fishing state tournament has been rescheduled after dangerous water levels on Carlyle Lake forced it to be postponed. The Illinois High School Association said Thursday that the competition will be May 31 to June 1. The tournament was to be May 3-4 on the lake in southern Illinois.

The 36th annual awards were presented by the Chicago Headline Club at the Union League Club in Chicago.

The attorney representing the families of four Maine West High School students who say they were hazing victims is upset over Maine Township High School District 207's decision to represent the soccer coach who is in the middle of that scandal. Former head soccer coach Michael Divincenzo has agreed to a drop an appeal of his dismissal in return for the district hiring an attorney to represent him in the lawsuit, district officials said.

Arlington Heights referee, youth advocate loses battle with cancer Mar 26, 2013 12:00 AM
Longtime Northwest suburban basketball referee Bill Spicer, who battled a rare form of leukemia for nearly a year, succumbed to the disease Sunday. He was 59. Spicer was involved with youth athletics for more than 20 years in the Northwest suburbs. He was active with the Arlington Heights Youth Athletic Association, serving as its president since 1989.

As top college basketball teams battled in March Madness matchups throughout the day Saturday, a tournament featuring 30 coed teams from Chicago area alternative schools focused more on sportsmanship than the final score. "Sportsmanship is what we're all about," said Sarah Lorenzi, chairwoman of the Chicago Area Alternative Education League's fundraising committee. "The biggest trophy is the sportsmanship award."

Maine West athletic director resigns Mar 7, 2013 12:00 AM
Citing personal reasons, Maine West High School's athletic director, Christopher Addante, has resigned and will step down from the post at the end of the school year. Addante's departure is not connected to the recent hazing scandal at the school that led to the firing of two soccer coaches, Maine Township High School District 207 spokesman Dave Beery said.
