  • ‘Home’ run suits Elert, Carmel May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
If her line-drive, gone-in-a-second smash had been hit more to center field, the softball might have rolled all the way to her Libertyville house. Amanda Elert’s 3-run homer in the first inning, truth be told, was hit that hard. It was the Carmel Catholic freshman catcher’s 10th home run of the season and propelled the fifth-seeded Corsairs to a 14-4 win in five innings over No. 12 Stevenson in the teams’ Class 4A regional semifinal at Libertyville on Thursday. “She’s just a very polished hitter,” Carmel Catholic coach Jason Raymond said. “Almost every at-bat, she gets great swings on the ball.” Think Elert was excited to play on Libertyville’s diamond? She lives five minutes away, between Carmel and Libertyville high schools. If she wasn’t attending Carmel, she’d be a Libertyville Wildcat.

  • South Elgin senior Kara Rodriguez won the regional semifinal game against Elgin with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning at St. Charles North Thursday.

Rodriguez wins it for South Elgin May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
South Elgin senior Kara Rodriguez did not have much success in her first two at-bats against Elgin junior standout Jennah Perryman Thursday, striking out both times. But with the game on the line, South Elgin's Female Athlete of the Year showed the determination of a champion and won the game for her team. Rodriguez lined a clean single up the middle to score Paige Allen from third base with the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Storm beat the Maroons 4-3 in the semifinals of the Class 4A St. Charles North regional. South Elgin beat St. Charles North 4-1 early in the season.

  • Cinderalla Aurora Central keeps winning May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
After the Aurora Central Catholic softball team prevailed over Walther Lutheran 12-0 on Thursday in the second semifinal of the Class 2A Lisle sectional, Chargers coach Jim Hallahan was reminded that his team was just two wins from reaching state. “We’re taking it one game at a time,” he said happily. And why not? The Chargers (13-14) are having fun this postseason and are typical of many teams this time of year -- they hit their stride at the perfect time.

  • Rosary comes out swinging, crushes Plano May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
Ask any coach and they’ll tell you they want their team playing their best this time of the year. Rosary did just that, starting with what coach John Kazmierczak said was the Royals’ best inning of the season in the bottom of the first Thursday against Plano in the Class 3A Rosary regional semifinals.

  • Warren runner Megan Sowa slides under the tag of Grayslake North catcher Kaitlyn Olsen in the third inning during Class 4A regional semifinal play Thursday at Warren.

    Coronado’s 2-homer day, Wagner’s pitching carry Warren May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
An injured index finger, jammed in practice on Wednesday, didn’t seem to bother Warren’s Selaina Coronado all that much. Coronado smacked a pair of home runs and finished with 7 RBI on Thursday afternoon, and Jana Wagner pitched 5 innings of no-hit ball before allowing a hit and a couple of runs as second-seeded Warren outslugged No. 3 seed Grayslake North 15-2 in 6 innings in Class 4A regional semifinal play in Gurnee. The Blue Devils (23-6) next host top-seeded Zion-Benton in the regional final at 3 p.m. Saturday.

  • Conant earns regional title shot May 23, 2013 12:00 AM
Conant softball coach Cathyann Smith, who guided the Cougars to Mid-Suburban League championships in 2011 and 2012, will have her team playing in a regional championship on Saturday in Glen Ellyn. • Prairie Ridge stops united Rosary May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
All season long, Rosary's girls soccer team had won — and lost — as a team, and the Royals' "all for one" mentality served them very well. So when the season ended on Wednesday in the Class 2A Freeport sectional semifinals, you can bet that Rosary didn't dissolve into a group of individuals. The Royals left the field after a 3-0 defeat to Prairie Ridge the same way the competed all season — as one group.

  • Weather forces baseball, softball regional shuffle May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Rainfall was the clear winner Wednesday as most of the baseball and softball playoff games involving Mid-Suburban League schools were postponed. In the majority of cases, the schedules were simply moved back by a day, forcing Wednesday's regional semifinal games to Thursday, and the remaining semifinals originally scheduled for Thursday to Friday. Saturday remains the day for regional championship play in all area regionals.

  • Jourdan can’t save Glenbard South May 22, 2013 12:00 AM

  • The kicker is, St. Francis gets win May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
St. Francis sophomore Corky Hart cramped up during Wednesday's Class 2A Riverside-Brookfield sectional semifinal against Hinsdale South. Hart's dehydration and cramping started at her calfs and hamstrings and eventually extended all the way to her back. She was undoubtedly tight and sore for most of the second half. Thankfully, she was able to deliver the biggest play of the game late in the first half before tightening up. Hart scored with 8:12 before halftime to break a 1-1 tie and lift the Spartans to a 2-1 victory. They advance to Saturday's sectional title game against Fenwick.

  • Dannah Williams, left, Gianna Dal Pozzo of Neuqua Valley move in on Christa Szalach of Naperville North during the Class 4A Bolingbrook girls soccer semifinals Wednesday.

Swift leads Naperville North comeback May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
If Naperville North and Neuqua Valley had played first goal wins, fans would have missed a great girls soccer game. A Zoe Swift goal 44 seconds into Wednesday's Class 3A Bolingbrook sectional final only whet the appetite for an action-packed game that turned into a 4-3 Huskies victory. "I didn't expect 4-3 either, but when you sit back and you think about it, when you've got this many attacking pieces out there that both of these teams have, it's really not a surprise I guess when you think of it," Huskies coach Steve Goletz said. "Obviously, neither of us probably going into the game, Neuqua or us, wanted to say we'd give up that many goals. But I think it's obviously a testament to the attacking players that are on the field."

  • Westminster falls in Class 1A sectional May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
It wasn't exactly the way Westminster Christian's softball team hopes its first trip to a sectional semifinal would go, but the Warriors were there nonetheless. Westminster managed just 4 hits and committed 6 errors Wednesday in a 20-2 loss to Gardner South Wilmington in the semifinals of the Class 1A Gilman Iroquois West sectional, played in downstate Onarga.

Girls track: Tri-Cities state notes May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
Emma Spagnola nearly etched her name among track and field immortals. Britney Williams could not have envisioned a greater way to end her high school career at St. Charles East. Aurora Christian junior Peyton Wade had a day few could match. The second day of the girls state track and field meet produced local champions in six different events in two separate classes.

  • St. Edward’s Allison Kruk begins to react to the Green Wave’s 3-1 loss to Francis W. Parker with seconds left Tuesday in the supersectional playoff at Concordia University in River Forest.

Heartbreak again for St. Edward May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
This might be the worst case of déjà vu for the St. Edward girls soccer team. For the second year in a row, the Green Wave was oh so close to a trip to the IHSA Class 1A state Final Four. But just as it happened last year in the sectional final against Lisle, the season ended in heartbreak for coach Tim Brieger’s team. Francis Parker was this year’s Lisle, coming from behind to beat the Green Wave 3-1 in the Concordia University supersectional in River Forest Tuesday. The IHSA added a supersectional round to Class 1A girls soccer this year for the first time.

  • Vernon Hills’ Dana Meline tags out St. Viator’s Gina Mastrodomenico on a steal attempt during Tuesday’s regional semifinal in Arlington Heights.

Claussen, Vernon Hills having fun winning May 22, 2013 12:00 AM
When she went to bat with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning, the last thing on Jenn Claussen’s mind was hitting a you-know-what. “I had no intention of doing that,” said the Cougars senior pitcher. “I just didn’t want to strike out. I just wanted to get on base.” But you know what? She cleared the bases. Claussen’s grand slam over the right-center field fence all but sealed the Cougars’ 7-0 victory over St. Viator in the semifinal of Lions’ own Class 3A regional in Arlington Heights. The No. 4-seeded Cougars (9-15) advance to Saturday’s 10 a.m. championship of today’s semifinal between No. 2 St. Edward and No. 3 Regina.
