  For the first time this century, Buffalo Grove will play for the Mid-Suburban League softball championship. Under third-year coach Jamie Paul, the Bison clinched the MSL East on Monday with a 6-5 victory over visiting Hersey.
  

   

• Angry Naperville Central moves on May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
  At some point, Naperville Central was going to accept its first loss and move on. The Redhawks weren't quite there Monday afternoon. "On the bus Nuss (coach Andy Nussbaum) was like There are stages of grief, and I think I'm at the anger stage,'" Redhawks junior Maddi Doane said with a smile. "That's how a lot of us felt today." Getting back on the field provided the needed medicine. Two days after St. Charles North handed No. 1 Naperville Central its first defeat, the Redhawks rebounded in neat fashion to beat Naperville North 6-2 at North Central College.
  

   

• Cattenhead a hit for Glenbard South May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
  To say Ashton Cattenhead has been a pleasant surprise for Glenbard South only tells half the story. It was a surprise she's even here. Cattenhead played for Glenbard South's freshman team two years ago, then moved to Huntley her sophomore year. Julie Fonda, the Raiders softball coach, didn't realize Cattenhead was back until she bumped into her in the hallway last fall.

  Perfect finish for Dolezal, Barrington in MSL May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
  Perfection was the word of the day for Barrington's softball team. The Fillies ended a perfect season in the Mid-Suburban West with a perfect game from sophomore pitcher Keenan Dolezal. Dolezal retired 21 straight batters before the Fillies got her the win in bottom of the seventh inning at the Fields of Dreams. Barrington junior first baseman Katie Dehnert's hard infielder grounder with two outs and the bases loaded brought home Erin Ward with the winning run. The 1-0 victory gave Barrington its first West crown since 2009 and 16th divisional crown in school history.
  

   

• Prairie Ridge denies Cary-Grove FVC Valley crown May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
  Lauren Stanley deserved better. Allowing only an unearned run in the sixth inning, Stanley was the hard-luck loser as Cary-Grove dropped a gut-wrenching 1-0 decision to Prairie Ridge in Fox Valley Conference Valley Division softball action in Crystal Lake Monday afternoon. The victory gave the Wolves the outright Valley championship with a 10-2 record. The Trojans end league play with a 9-3 slate.

  The Bartlett softball team played a little game of follow the leader Monday. Senior leadoff hitter Rachel Odolski was 4-for-5 with 3 runs scored and senior Jessica Kirby got over a rough first two innings in the circle as the Hawks beat South Elgin 13-4 in Upstate Eight Conference Valley Division action at Bartlett on the Hawks' senior day. "It's my job to get on base and get the spirit going for the team," said Odolski. "Follow the leader."

  Warren’s Booker authors an All-Big Ten season May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
  Illinois junior left fielder and former Warren star Alex Booker (Warren) has been named to the All-Big Ten second team. She also earned a spot on the inaugural Big Ten all-defensive team. Booker has had a fantastic season for the Illini on both offense and defense, leading the Orange and Blue at the plate with a .352 batting average and a .425 on base percentage. The speed demon has stolen 20 bases in just 21 attempts, becoming just the third Illini in school history to tab 20 swipes in a single season, while tying for second with a .952 efficiency.
  

   

• Softball takes a back seat as Pauly moves forward May 13, 2013 12:00 AM
  Nicole Pauly is turning in her softball uniform. For the first time in 20 years, the former Palatine High School, Northwestern University and Akron Racers standout will not play competitive softball in the summer months. "Oh maybe I'll play on a slow-pitch team" she said with a smile. "But professionally I'm starting the next chapter of my life."Pauly recently obtained a master's degree in school counseling from Loyola after getting her bachelor's degree from Northwestern.

  Naperville Central (29-1) and Barrington (27-1) held onto the top two spots in this week's Daily Herald Top 20 rankings of area softball teams. Glenbard South (21-3) moved up to No. 3 as the regular season enters its final week.
  

   

• Crystal Lake C. derails Grayslake CentralMay 12, 2013 12:00 AM
  The chances were there as Grayslake Central's girls soccer team pursued its third straight Fox Valley Fox Division girls soccer title. The Rams needed to get a victory in one their final two matches. It didn't happen, though, as Grayslake Central lost to visiting Crystal Lake Central 1-0 on Saturday morning in Grayslake.
