  • Burlington Central notches 33rd straight league win Jan 27, 2015 10:49 PM
Johnsburg’s girls basketball team came into Burlington Central’s gym Tuesday night with upset on its mind. And why not? The Skyhawks were 8-1 in the Big Northern East and if they could pull off the unexpected it would likely mean tying for the division championship. For the better part of the first half Johnsburg kept pace with the Rockets before falling behind by 8 points at halftime. Then came the third quarter. The Rockets, ranked No. 10 in the AP Class 3A state poll this week, blasted out of the second-half gate with an apparent sense of urgency to let their visitors know they intend to win the BN-East outright for the third straight year. BC outscored the Skyhawks 28-4 in the third quarter, eventually cruising to a 55-24 win.

  • Hughes, Warren able to knock off Lake Zurich Jan 27, 2015 11:22 PM
Welcome to the rough-and-tough world of girls basketball, Jordyn Hughes. Yes, the Warren freshman looks like a player to keep an eye on. “Against Zion, I hit my head on the floor,” said Hughes, who was out two weeks with a concussion. On Tuesday night at Lake Zurich, Hughes shook of the cob webs and scored her team’s first 10 points of the game. Still, it was anyone’s game at halftime as Warren held a 22-19 lead. Hughes finished with a game-high 18 points and 3 steals, and the Blue Devils held the Bears to just 7 second-half points in a 46-26 North Suburban Lake Division romp.

With a 3-23 record in his first year as Aurora Central Catholic coach, it hasn’t always been easy for Mark Fitzgerald in his journey to 100 career wins. Fittingly then, his Chargers didn’t make that 100th win come easy Tuesday night in Aurora, spotting visiting IC Catholic Prep the first 13 points of the game. Aurora Central Catholic missed its first 12 shots from the field and committed 5 turnovers in that stretch. The Chargers found their footing in the second and third quarters, outscoring Lady Knights by 19 to erase the early 13-0 hole on their way to a 49-41 win — the 100th in Fitzgerald’s seven seasons as coach.
